"I'm sorry if you were offended by what I said." Is NOT an apology. I repeat, it is not an apology.



It is the equivalent of saying, "I don't want to apologize because it's YOUR fault for being offended."



If you actually feel bad for offending someone, the correct apology should be as follows or at least something of the like: "It was not my intention to offend you, I apologize for doing so."



There is nothing wrong with apologizing. Contrary to what some may believe, apologizing does not always mean admitting of being wrong or guilt. It is a polite social gesture that requires grace and the absense of poisonous ego.



Sometimes we honestly don't mean that we're sorry and we feel that if someone has a problem with what we say, that's on them.



Yet, if you apologize in the manner I listed as not an apology and later whine, "Well I DID apologize to you!" - You are an annoying asshole.
