Fawn woke the next night to the smell of coffee coming in from the kitchen. She yanked the covers up over her head; she didn't ever want to get out of bed. There came a soft knock on her door, and then the creak of the hinges.
"Fawn?" said Carlos softly.
She slowly brought the covers down just below her eyes, staring at him. He had, in one hand, a plate of something and what she figured was probably coffee in the other. He walked to the night table and set the plate and mug down.
"I made you breakfast." he said proudly, smiling. "Peanut butter toast and the best coffee you will ever taste."
Fawn chuckled and rubbed her aching eyes.
"Oh my god I have a headache. Do I have to eat now?" she asked.
"Only if you want to get better." he answered.
He sat down on the edge of her bed. She looked at him, then picked up the toast and took a bite.
As she chewed, she found that she could barely swallow her own saliva.
"Did you sleep well?" asked Carlos.
"Yes" she answered, taking another bite. "Did I throw up on you last night?"
He laughed. "No, you didn't. How many drinks did you have anyway?"
"Like four." She shoved the last piece of the toast into her mouth.
"So wait a minute, what happened with that girl? Did you get her number? Did you hug her? Did you kiss her? Did she come here? Did I throw up on her?"
Carlos sighed. He had really hoped she wouldn't ask, yet at the same time he wanted her to.
"In answer to your mass of questions, yes, no, yes, no, no."
Fawn nearly choked on her sip of coffee.
"You KISSED HER? When? This is really good coffee by the way. Are you sure she didn't come back here?"
Now Carlos looked really annoyed.
"Don't be dirty, we didn't do anything. I brought you out to the car and she came to give the keys back, which I forgot, and she kissed me. Big deal...she's a vampire too though."
"HUGE DEAL!" said Fawn excitedly. She smiled widely and set the mug back on the table, sitting up. "So she's a vampire! Was that it? Are you guys going to see each other again?"
Carlos couldn't help but blush.
"Yeah...I was actually going to see her tonight. I wanted to check with you though...see if you wanted company.
Fawn waved her hand dismissively.
"Hey I'll be fine. Go see your significant other, and if you need any co-"
"FAWN!"
"WHAT?"
"Don't!"
"Ok ok jeez....but there's ten bucks in my dresser drawer if you change your mind."
"Fawn!"
"Alright alright! My goodness."
She was feeling much better now, her headache had almost gone.
He walked over to the bar where Fawn was sitting, drinking another glass of her interesting concoction. He ordered Sheri's drink, then looked at her.
"Having another glass of bile?" he asked jokingly.
Fawn rolled her eyes and took a gulp.
"It's an aquired taste." she said matter of factly. "Who's the martini for?"
Carlos looked down at the counter and tapped his fingers, not answering. Fawn's eyes widened and she laughed.
"It's for that girl isn't it! You're buying her a drink!"
Carlos sighed heavily and rolled his eyes to the ceiling. They were silent until the bartender brought over the martini, and Fawn ordered another of her own drink.
"Should you really be drinking all of that?" Carlos asked.
She giggled.
"Oh shush and go talk to your girlfriend, she must be missing you." she said, winking.
Carlos stared at her for a few more minutes, with a slightly annoyed look, before bringing Sheri her drink.
"Here's your poison." he said, smiling.
Sheri laughed, and her laugh alone sent chills sizzling up his spine.
"You didn't get yourself anything?" she asked him.
"Oh...well I've never really drank before so.....yeah." he answered shyly.
She giggled and held the glass to his lips.
"Try some."
Now he was especially nervous. He looked at her, and she smiled. Hesitantly, he took a small sip and she pulled the glass back. They stared at each other for a while, and he felt absolutely lost in her eyes. Then she spoke.
"You know, you have a very calming presence Carlos." she said.
He could feel himself blush, and he chuckled. He liked Sheri.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fawn noticed that Carlos and the girl he was with were getting quite comfortable. They were holding hands. This made Fawn slightly annoyed, but she wasn't sure why. Perhaps it was the fact that she was on her third drink. Yes, that must have been it. She threw back the last drop of her drink and got down off of the stool she was perched on. She walked out onto the dancefloor, pushing past the mass of people. She felt the thick air pressing down on her, carrying the scent of cigarettes and various beverages. Shoving through the crowd, she came to where Carlos and his new found mate were sitting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Carlos noticed Fawn stumbling through the crowd and up to them. She put her hands on his shoulders.
"Caaaaarrrrr.....los. I um....need drive home you me." she slurred.
He stared at her for a short while before turning to Sheri. She smiled sweetly and squeezed his hand.
"You go. I'll be here tomorrow." she said, then winked.
A wide grin spread across his face, and he nodded. Fawn started to rock back and forth a bit, so he took her by the hand and led her to the club's exit. Practically dragging her, he gently took Fawn to where their car was parked. Sitting Fawn down and leaning her against the tire, he yanked the door handle. Locked. He patted his pockets, and realized that he must have left the keys inside the club. Intending to go back and search for them, he turned around to see Sheri, the car keys dangling from her outstretched finger.
"Oh.." he said. " Hah, I was actually just about to come back for those."
He reached for them, and she yanked them away, a playful grin on her face. She shook the finger of her other hand.
"If you want them, we'll have to trade." she said.
Carlos looked confused.
"Trade what?" he asked.
Suddenly, she grabbed hold of his face, her fingers just below his jawbone. She brought her face exceptionally close to his, which made his heart skip a beat. Before he could ask what she was doing, although he was pretty sure he knew, she lightly pressed her lips to his, and placed the keys into his hand. She drew back and smiled, curling his fingers around the warm metal.
"So I guess I might see you tomorrow. You've got my number." she said, and gently poked the tip of his nose before turning and heading back toward the club.
Carlos stood, car keys clenched in his hand, watching her until she was out of sight. He knew he was blushing again, he could feel it. He turned back to Fawn, who had curled up on the asphalt and was fast asleep. He unlocked the car, opened the door, and lifted her into the back seat, thankful that she hadn't witnessed the exchange between he and Sheri. If she had, he figured he would never hear the end of it. Driving home, he looked up at the starlit sky, dark as the velvet drapes that hung above the windows at George's house. As he pulled into the driveway, he remembered the missing child sign he had ripped from the club's wall, and took it out of his pocket. He unfolded it, and sure enough, his picture was printed, in full color, accompanied by his unique description. He suddenly became angry, and tore up the flier. He violently threw open the driver's side door and stepped out, slamming it behind him. He removed Fawn from the back seat and brought her into the house. He carefully laid her in her bed, and retreated to George's room, not bothering to even remove his shoes before falling asleep.
They drove to the small club just out of town. As they walked to the huge metal doors, Fawn pulled two I.D.'s out of her pocket. She handed one to him. On it, was his picture with someone else's name and age. He chuckled and as they got up to the bouncer, he felt his heart race. Would they be let in? Would it work? Fawn nonchalantly handed both her's and Carlos' to the brawly looking man scanning the various driver's licenses. He swiped it under the blue light, a confused expression crossing his face. He held both of them up in front of him. Carlos was now even more nervous, he had never used a fake I.D. before. He wished with all his might that they wouldn't be arrested. Almost as if the bouncer had heard his thought, he handed back the false licenses and waved them inside. The rave inspired M.A.D by Hadouken blared through the huge speakers that littered the interior. Fawn turned to him.
"Isn't this cool? I can't believe it worked! Maybe we can get drinks with these...." she said excitedly.
As Fawn scuttled over to the bar, Carlos scanned the rather small but energized club. It was quite dark, with deep blue lights flashing every second. People dressed in clothing ranging from the Bride of Chucky to corsets and combat boots whirled and spun across the dance floor. He smiled and looked on. He liked it here. Fawn came running back to him with a tall glass in her hand.
"Oh my god taste this!" she exclaimed.
He did, and gagged from the taste.
"That's disgusting! What the hell is that?!"
Fawn laughed. "I know, it's totally gross! It's rum, tequila, and red bull. I love it! You want one?"
"I'll pass" he said. "Y'know I think I'm going to go check the rest of the place out."
"Ok! I'm going to go finish this thing. By the way that girl over there is looking at you."
She smiled and ran off. Carlos looked around and as the song came to an end, he spotted a girl sitting in a bean bag chair at the far end of the room. She was smiling, her golden eyes twinkling in the pulsing lights. Her hair was blond, somewhat like Fawn's, but her's was streaked black and red. She wore combat boots with a victorian style dress that stopped a good two inches above her knees. She waggled her fingers at him, and he felt his face flush. He turned away, then thought it rude and turned back. She was still looking. He wasn't sure if he wanted to go to her. He stood and stared while she watched him. He smiled shyly, and she beckoned to him with her finger. Heart racing, he walked nervously over to where she was sitting.
"Um hi..." he said shakily.
She smiled a dazzling, white toothed smile. A white, pointed toothed smile, as he noticed. She pulled another one of the bean bags close to hers and patted it. He slowly sat down. Suddenly, she put her hand on his chin and pried his jaw open.
"I see your fangs haven't come in yet. What's your name?"
How did she know he was a vampire? He stared, wide eyed, into her face.
"M...um.....My, my name is uh....um Carlos." he stuttered out.
He silently cursed himself for being so intimidated.
"Carlos....hey aren't you that kid the police have been looking for?"
"I'm sorry?" he asked.
She pointed up to the wall above her head, where there were various memos and advertisements posted, among them being a poster, and written in big letters was Have You Seen This Child? Then he saw his picture. He jumped up and ripped it off the wall. He couldn't believe he was being searched for. The girl smiled at him.
"Don't worry, I won't turn you in. Im Sheri, you wanna dance with me?"
He nervously nodded his head, afraid that if he spoke he would find that his voice was nothing but a whisper. She laughed and took his hand, leading him to the dance floor. She swayed and spun in the lights, and then looked at him suddenly, a smile spreading across her face.
"Well come on! You don't dance? Come on, dance with me." she said.
She took his other hand and moved his arms to the beat of the music. He smiled and went with it, and the two of them danced until night mixed with day, the songs screaming from the speakers melting into each other to become one muffled blurb. The sound of Sheri's voice suddenly jolted him from the daze.
"So how old are you?" she was asking, nearly shouting above the music.
"I'm fifteen." he yelled back.
"Wow! Are you really fifteen or is that just your legal age?"
"No, I'm fifteen. I was just turned like a week or so ago. How did you know I was a vampire?" he replied.
"I can tell, I am too." she said, winking at him.
He felt his face get hot, and nearly choked out his next sentence.
"Um, can I uh... do you want a drink or something?" he asked, staring into her golden eyes once again.
"Sure!" she said, handing him a ten dollar bill. "A martini would be nice."
He gently pushed her hand, holding the money, away.
"It's ok, I'll pay for it." he said, smiling.
