I may need someone willing to take a stray in soon. Any offers?
It may be premature but I could smell the 'end of summer' the other night while I was out running a new trail. I was in a heavily wooded park and at that optimal time of evening in the summer time - between 7 and 8:30PM. The trails are narrow with lots of twists and turns, a steep cliff face on one side and a lake on the other, so keeping your wits about you is fairly imperative.
The memorable moment of the evening occurred as I was running across a short covered bridge and just as I got to the other side, a deer with not one, but two fawn came out of the woods. We all sort of skidded to a stop. I'm honestly not sure who was more startled to see whom. But, and this was quite a movie-esque moment, some random guy came down the much larger trail at just that moment. Instinct? An urge to not be seen by a human? I have no idea, but I and the deer all bounded into the woods at the same time. And bounded is really the best word to describe what we did. After making a good 30-40 yards, I glanced behind me to see the guy still standing there on the main trail peering into the woods, lol, no doubt wondering if he'd really seen what he thought he saw.
At any rate, after racing along these trails with what can only be described as unbridled joy, I slowed down and sniffed the air. It was then that I caught it. That faintest scent of 'this warmth won't last much longer.' The scent of 'everything is as ripe as it will ever be.'
I know for many normals, this is a sad thing. But I also know on this site at least, I'm not alone in saying "Thank the vampire gods, the days are getting shorter!"
