Prologue
Thunder cracked over head as the rain soaked into the already sodden earth, as a pair of boots squelched in the mud, the figure looked up at the old abandoned house the vines already trying to break through the windows, the door barred with several planks of wood, the figure let out a snort of impatience as they kicked the door breaking the boards with a swift movement, the figure headed inside pulling down the cloak that covered their head, to let their Auburn hair fall down. The figure saw the small note fluttering in the breeze as the figure let out a sound that could be classed as happiness as they picked it up to read it.
“To whom it may concern, you may think that most things you know are true….well I am here to tell you that they are not. I used to think that the Egyptian Gods and Goddesses were myths and fairytales that my mother used to tell me to help me sleep at night, well I’m here to tell you that they are real….and I think in some small way my mother knew that, she was telling me these stories to help me when I would need them. Let me start at the beginning, my name is Jayden….I would tell you my last name but that would be far to dangerous, if you are reading this letter….then I am either dead….or it’s you Mia and you want to know what’s happened.
I always knew that there was something weird about me, I always heard whispers in a language that I couldn’t understand, I always just thought it was my imagination….but sometimes I saw my mother have a far away look in her eyes and thought maybe she knew more then she was letting on. I decided to leave my parents when I was 17 and move in with my girlfriend Hannah, we were together for a few years…but then we drifted apart as I spent more time with the band…..we were called “The Sphinx’s” an ironic name now I come to think about it, I came up with the name, I guess it just sort of popped into my head.
Anyway I digress…..I guess the stories that my mother had told me always stayed with me, I kept on learning about the Gods and Goddesses and everything I could about Egypt, I even went there for a holiday once, and man let me tell you it was awesome, to see the Pyramids at Giza….and the Valley of the Kings….I even felt something stirring inside me, not that I knew what it was at the time.
When I came back home….I found that I had been disowned by my parents, and that they had drifted apart, there were countless arguments between the two of them, my father accused my mother of becoming far away and detached from everyday life. She just laughed at him and let out a string of curse words in Egyptian, my father left and my mother never saw him again, I would say that me and my mother became close again, but that wasn’t the case she still wasn’t impressed with my choice of occupation. But I didn’t really want to pay attention to her I was happy with what I was doing and I thought that was all that mattered.
I could never sleep very well, I started having nightmares when I was 20 years old, I hadn’t had one well since I was like 9 years old, I saw a man with blood red skin, with eyes that looked like pits of fires, I woke up covered in sweat and my bed sheets were always wet, I didn’t realise that who I was seeing, was a God….especially not an Egyptian God, I thought that my mind was just throwing things into an amalgamation of things to produce this thing.
I wrote this letter in the hope that…well people would believe me, for I know that it is to late for me….and Mia, if it is you reading this letter then I have always loved you and I value your friendship…so much”
Some tears dropped onto the letter as it was closed, Mia sniffed lightly as she sat down on the floor of the room, she looked around as this was once the house that Jayden lived in, before a fire had swept through it, she knew know that…maybe he had been telling the truth, that maybe after all there had been some truth to what Jayden had been telling her about feeling as though he was being followed and his dreams were being tampered with.
She stood up slowly and ran a hand through her hair letting her dark blue eyes scan the living room, she then looked up at the stairs which looked dangerous to climb, but she knew her small frame would allow her to scale them as she raced up them hearing the floorboards creaking underneath her as the stairs began to shatter and then fall, she cursed not knowing how she’s get down from there, she then walked past all the rooms, seeing dust flutter in the wind.
The house must have been in a fire or something to have this much damage done to it, she knelt down and picked up what looked like a small hair, it was light brown, she felt a tremor running through the house as the rain beat heavily against the window panes, she shivered slightly from the cold wind that seemed to whistle through the house as she smelt the damp smell of rotting wood, she wrinkled her nose in disgust. She stood up slowly and then walked into Jayden’s room and gasped as she saw the window had been blown outwards and scorch marks were apparent on his walls, as though somebody had set fire to them, she then knelt down as she saw something shining underneath his bed, she pulled it out and saw it was his diary, emblazoned with an Eye of Horus on the front of it, she saw that it was locked.
The lightning cracked over head as the thunder rumbled, she looked out and saw what seemed to be falcon holding onto the branch of a tree that was being buffeted by the wind, the falcon’s eyes seemed to burn into her before it let out a loud cry and flew away from the house.
She shook herself as she finished looking around the room, she then decided there was nothing else there as she tucked the diary into the pocket of her jacket as she pulled up the hood of her coat leaping down from the open wall of the house as she landed in some mud which came up to her knees, she cursed in Spanish, for she was half Spanish as she ran towards her motorbike and revved the engine speeding away from the house, as it finally gave up the ghost and creaked one final time as it began to fall.
