So if you don't know Only Lovers Left Alive is a vampire movie from 2014 about two cultured and very old vamps who are in love and have been together a long time. The film starts with them on other sides of the world with him feeling blue and her loving the locals. They're both sanguine vamps who need blood. He's a musician and she isn't shown working but after so long they have plenty of cash. But not enough blood. And they live in the shadows, unable to disclose themselves to anyone but other vamps a blood doctor, and a friendly who lives near her. This movie is just great.
Almost none of the scenes are during the day, and when they are during the day it's just to show the isolation they feel from the outside world. They talk about their past, the history of what they call "zombies" (humans) and feel the weight of centuries of seeing evil and experiencing knowledge on Earth. You might call them "art vampires" and they're very keen on music, both Brits. The movie pokes fun at them a bit, but in a lighthearted way, they're not portrayed as monsters, just not perfect. The point of the film is clear, the only thing worth doing with your time on earth is loving, but it has a great way of telling that story. We get the sense that these two aren't just hiding from the sunlight, but from having to witness any more evil in history. They aren't heroes though, just immortals making their way though the world one step at a time. It's wonderful.
