Something Wasn’t Right

23:54 Jan 01 2006

As Elizabeth slowly approached Gabriel’s bedroom, she knew that something wasn’t right. Something was very wrong. She didn’t know how she knew. All she knew was that something didn’t feel right. Elizabeth paused in front of Gabriel’s closed bedroom door. She felt a cold, painful shiver run through her fragile, shaking body. Elizabeth didn’t know whether or not she should open the door to the bedroom, afraid of what she might find. She slowly stretched out her trembling right hand and grasped the cold metal doorknob. Her palms were sweaty and as cold as ice. Elizabeth stood there, still clutching the unturned doorknob. She slowly and cautiously put her ear to the door and listened for any sign that Gabriel was in there. Elizabeth heard nothing, not a single sound. The room was as silent as a grave. She softly knocked on the door with her left hand. Still holding the doorknob with her right hand and with a voice almost as quiet as a whisper, she called to Gabriel but she still heard nothing. For the first time in her life, Elizabeth was afraid to go into her brothers’ room. The silence terrified her, for Gabriel’s room had always been anything but quiet. The radio was always turned up loud enough to be heard throughout the entire two-story house. Gabriel always had the T.V. on as well. He liked it that way, even when he was talking on the phone. What was it about the silence of her brothers’ room that scared her so much? Elizabeth had to know. Gathering up all of her courage, Elizabeth slowly turned the doorknob and pushed the door open. As it opened, the door squeaked on its hinges like a caught mouse. She peered inside the room, the early morning sun shown brightly through the half open window. A gentle breeze softly rustled the bottom of the long, white, floor length curtain. Gabriel liked to sleep with the window open. The gentle chirping of the crickets and bullfrogs were like a lullaby he anxiously waited to hear before going to sleep each night. The huge, sliding door, walk in closet, straight across from the foot of the four poster bed, was being held slightly open by a soccer ball. The T.V. sitting on top of the dresser had been left on with the sound muted. There was no picture on it. It only looked like a bunch of black and white ants scurrying across the screen. The stereo on the bedside table had been left on pause and was making no sound except for the low, soft buzz of the still spinning CD. Elizabeth slowly walked over to the four-poster bed on which her brother was sleeping peacefully. She gently sat down on the side of the bed. The cool, white, cotton sheets were unwrinkled. Elizabeth looked at his cold, expressionless face and started to weep. Her face was expressionless. Her eyes did not blink. The only sign of emotion were the sad, salty tears streaming down her pale cheeks. Elizabeth reached out and took Gabriel’s cold, stiff, lifeless hand. Sobbing, she looked upon the seventeen year old boys’ body. What a short life he had lived. He spent most of his time trying to make others happy. He influenced Elizabeth the most. She had never spent even a second in all of her ten years being unhappy. Gabriel could always make her laugh. Elizabeth was never lonely even though Gabriel was her only friend. She laid her head over her brothers unbeating heart and cried like the fragile little ten year old girl that she was, determined not to leave her brothers side.
