Bad. It's bad. I never expect life to be fair, but you don't expect it to be so cruel either. It's not even my life that I'm worried about.
When I was seven my mother's parents took me and a couple of my cousins to Washington to visit my grandmother's family. This was our only visit. So of course we visited the beach. I've only seen two salt water beaches in my life, one in Washington and one in Florida, both in the same year. I'm going to talk about the Washington one though.
The beach smelled terrible. I never even got in the water because I couldn't stand the smell. I don't even know what the smell was, but it was just repulsive. I sat on a bench a good distance away from the water before I noticed the tide pools. They were so pretty. There were other people combing through them, and... a man gave me a starfish in a baggie of water. It's been fifteen years, I don't remember his face, but I remember him handing me the bag. The water in the bag was very clear.
Unfortunately... my grandmother killed the starfish. On purpose. I was very unhappy about it. She said it tried to get away. Actually, I'm still pissed about that, because when it dried out she gave it to my mother and it's been a decoration in her bathroom ever since.
One day, I would really like to get it back.
Long, hot day. Got up early to run some errands before stopping at the ice cream social. Pretty much just went there to find the Mennonite booth. They make some of the best sweets. They hadn't set up by mid day yet, so we went to their shop which is just out of town but down many, many back roads. If you don't know where it is you will never find it.
And just as we got there they were finishing up the cake roll I had originally wanted. They are huge though, I got half and my mother got half.
A few hours later my mother invited me to dinner with my grandfather. Great place, great food, but the service tonight was the worst I've ever seen.
And now, I'm fending off a headache and sucking down as much water as I can. :)
Family dinner tonight for my grandfather. My hair was curled. Kind of makes me look like a fifteen year old, but what can you do? I don't know what I'm doing.
Probably going to come home smelling like cigarettes again. I'm the only one that doesn't smoke.
I love my grandpa a lot though. He's pretty awesome. Everyone else can bite me though.
My dad got married today. It was a spontaneous thing. He texted me this afternoon to let me know and my response was "Bout time." They've been talking about it for awhile, and she's been using our last name for about four years now. She's great really, I think she's good for him. Love her kids too, they've been apart of the family for 8 years now, and I don't treat them any differently from my biological siblings.
The second marriage is usually the one that works in my family. Same thing happened with my grandparents on both sides and my great grandparents on my father's side. Actually, the people my great grandparents married used to be married to each other. So... they wife swapped. Not too many people can say that.
Hey, it worked well for them.
Should be seeing fireflies soon. It's almost warm enough, and thanks to all of the springs, lakes, and rivers they are quite abundant around here. Always look out for them every year. Though I called them lightnin' bugs when I was little.
