One Halloween Night.
If you are familiar with the Haight Ashbury District of San Francisco, locals will tell you that everyday is Halloween there. While the area is known for its street kids, old hippies, the homeless, punks, and goths, along with the unique shops and relatively inexpensive eateries, it also shields those secretive denizens of the night. One never knows who one will run into…
By the time Daniel and I were finished with our shopping, it was dark. We had already tore into a bag of Snickers, joking on how that would be the one candy that would not be handed out. The homeless and street kids began to accumulate on the corners, blocking the sidewalks - and generally being obnoxious.
"Hey man - got any change?" asked one lanky kid with long greasy hair. Daniel raised an eyebrow and looked down at the panhandler with disdain. The kid backed away quickly, and looked down at his worn army boots.
“You can be a real snob sometimes” I commented as we continued down the street.
We went around a corner into an unfamiliar dark narrow alley. Neither one of us would admit that we were lost. Plus - we were both too busy devouring chocolate. When we got to the end of the alley, we turned another corner…right into a young Hispanic gang. Which was odd, as the majority of the city's gangs were in the Mission district, the Western Addition, Hunter's Point, and Chinatown. Gangs rarely frequented The Haight…
There were five of them and they were Blood affiliates, judging from the red T-shirts and bandanas they wore. The 'alpha' cholo strutted up to Daniel, eyeing the messenger bag that he carried.
“Trick or treat, mutha’ fucka’” he said menacingly.
We were rooted to the ground, motionless. Neither Daniel nor I uttered a word.
"Wassup!" the cholo barked. Daniel sighed and looked at me sideways. With a bored expression, he looked back at the cholo.
"The night sky" he replied dryly.
The cholo was not pleased with Daniel’s response. He pulled out a gun from his jacket pocket. "The bag, ese" he hissed. One of his companions murmured "He's a big-ass dude, man..."
"Shut the fuck up" snapped the alpha cholo. "Dude can't fight no bullet!" His hand shook nervously. "Gimme' the bag, man!" he demanded. He then glanced at me and said "And the purse too, bitch!"
Daniel laughed, which unnerved the gang. "You want our bags?”
Daniel slowly removed his messenger bag from around his chest, then held it up high. “Come and get it" He wore a wicked smile upon his face.
The cholo had a wild look in his eyes. The gun practically rattled in his hand.
"Dude - I will cap yo' ass! I ain't playin'!"
Still smiling, Daniel replied "So…go ahead and cap me."
The alpha cholo had to do something. He knew that if he backed down, he would be considered a 'pussy'. He would lose face and possibly his status. With a shaky hand, he aimed for Daniel’s chest, but shot him in the left shoulder instead. The messenger bag fell from Daniel’s grasp. Yet, he didn’t even flinch. Instead, Daniel stood as still as a statue, glaring at the cholo who just shot him.
"This is a two-hundred dollar shirt you just ruined, boy" he said matter-of-factly. With lightning speed, Daniel had the cholo's back to his chest, locking him in a bear hug. “Whatever you have planned, do it quickly. The gunfire will have triggered calls to 911“ was all I said, nonchalantly. Two of the cholos ran off into the night, while the remaining two stood as still as deer in headlights.
"Many of you kids these days have no respect" Daniel whispered. He sunk his fangs into the cholo’s throat, and began to feed. After only a minute - with a clean efficient motion - he broke the cholo's neck. The gun clattered to the ground, followed by the thud of the cholo's lifeless body.
The two remaining cholos were rooted to the ground. One of them urinated on himself. I walked up to them, and gave each a resounding slap. I wasn’t hungry for blood, so I didn’t feed. I wanted to get back to my Snickers. I have to admit that slapping the shit out of the lil’ bastards gave me some gratification though.
Daniel glared at them with glowing eyes. "Shouldn't you two be at home doing your homework for your remedial reading class?"
They took off running.
Daniel laughed and yelled after them “Trick or treat!’
…and like the denizens of the night, we disappeared into the incoming fog.
