I had to think for a long time about the best way to describe this series. It is a musical teen drama and those are pretty much always the same.
An idol star with a secret falls from grace and ends up in high school where he meets an enigmatic girl who despises him but somehow they keep bumping into each other. The girl is being looked after by the class president who has his own reasons for getting close to her but he pretends to be her friend while the idol star brazenly pursues her.
They end up thrown together for a class project or some other sort of challenge that becomes an ultimate showdown between their group which increases to 7 and the high school all star band.
The plot is cookie cutter but the story is good. The musical talent is really good. The soundtrack is A+(in my book).
The individual stories of each character make this series a lot better than I could have imagined it and the musical scenes are powerful.
This series is a gem. The main character Jang Geu Rae(his name Geu Rae translating to "that is so" or in a simpler term "yes". It is a running gag)grew up studying nothing but the art of Baduk. At the game he is a Master; the best. Somehow even with this he fails to become a professional player and finds himself having to live in the real world, with no skills.
Referred by an acquaintance who knows of his lack of skills but also his passion to learn and succeed he finds himself working for an International trading company as a contract worker(like a year-long temp, the contract is renewed yearly until they are dropped or officially hired).
He tries to approach his job using Baduk inspired technique.
Many things about this series make it stand out.
Im Si Wan is so perfect in appearances for this role because he really does look like an innocent little kid.
It reflects the highs and lows of salary work; the euphoric victories and the life sucking day to day battle to attain those victories.
It was not strictly a romance; in fact, though characters are romantically interested in the female lead no one actually becomes romantically involved and instead this is more a people story and not about romance.
This was the first Korean drama series to film on location in Jordan. Far out!
There is some dark humor because after all even a miserable life has humorous moments; this is a very serious story overall.
