There’s a beautiful scene in Hunter S. Thompson’s dark memoir, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He talks about how just outside Las Vegas, in the shadow of the lights of the strip and the noise of the casinos, it’s possible to just barely discern the high-water mark of the idealism of the ‘60s, which had by then given way to the indulgences and selfishness of the ‘70s.

This is an interesting way to look at history—instead of some march of progress, a kind of series of peaks and valleys, crests and crashes. For instance, historians often date the Antonine Age—the time of Marcus Aurelius—as the high-water mark of the empire. What followed was the decline and fall of Rome, and eventually the Dark Ages. The Renaissance, where a lot of ancient philosophy was rediscovered, was a kind of high-water mark. Conversely, the four years of the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865 were the high-water mark of slave power and oligarchy in the United States. The Nazi regime was a high-water mark of evil, which crested with the Holocaust.

The question today, the thing we have some control over with our own choices and actions, is what kind of wave we’re in. Will 2020 be the high-water mark of incompetence and dysfunction which eventually breaks, giving way to a new era of collectivism and collaboration? Or are we in fact, in the middle of a receding tide now, the decline of the post-war world order and prosperity that emerged after WWII and was confirmed after the collapse of communism?

Well… it all depends. It depends on you. It depends on us.

Remember: The Stoics thought history was the same thing happening over and over again. Marcus tried to get perspective by zooming out, by connecting to the rhythm of timeless events. At the same time, he did see it as his duty to try to lead the country in the right direction. He tried to make a difference. He wanted his reign, his life, to contribute to a moment of goodness, knowing still it would eventually be punctuated by reaction and regression.

So what will it be? What will you do?-Daily Stoic

Mortal as I am, I know that I am born for a day. But when I follow at my pleasure the serried multitude of the stars in their circular course, my feet no longer touch the earth.

Honesty and hard work are commendable traits of character, but they will never make a success of the person who does not guide them toward a definite major purpose.

Character is an important element of success and a critical attribute of leadership, but character alone cannot ensure success unless it is channeled in a positive direction. When good, decent people — persons of character — connect with a major purpose for their lives toward which they willingly and enthusiastically direct their energies, the results can be awe-inspiring. A major purpose and outstanding character are a formidable combination....Napolean Hill

The hands of the Clock of Time are moving swiftly onward! We cry out, “Backward, turn backward, O Time in your flight,” but Time does not heed your cries.

It is later than you think!

Arouse yourself, fellow wayfarer; awake and take possession of your own mind while you still have enough Time to become, during the yet unexpired future, that which you would have liked to have been in the past.

Make the most of your present allotment of Time, with the hope that you will not have to reincarnate in order to do the job all over again because of neglect.

You have been warned!

Now the responsibility is YOURS. There is a simple test by which you may judge whether or not you have been using your Time to best advantage. If you have attained peace of mind and material opulence sufficient for your needs, your Time has been properly used. If you have not attained these blessings, your Time has not been properly used, and you should begin now to search for the circumstances in connection with which you have fallen short.

The truly great people have no such reality as “idle time,” because they keep their minds geared eternally to patterns of constructive thought. By this profound use of their Time, they develop an alert sixth sense through which they look, listen, and see from within.

If negative thoughts stray into the minds of the truly great, these thoughts are immediately transmuted into positive thoughts and exercised by positive physical action appropriate to their nature.

Tick, tick, tick—the pendulum of the Clock of Time is swinging rapidly!

The entire face of civilization is undergoing an uplifting operation.

Mr. Right and Mr. Wrong are engaged in mortal combat for supremacy. The Time has come for everyone to stand up and be counted. The use each of us makes of our individual allotment of Time will tell whose side each of us is on—Mr. Right’s or Mr. Wrong’s.

Something has speeded up the Clock of Time so rapidly that the last half of the twentieth century will reveal to humankind more individual opportunities for self-improvement than have been revealed during the entire past of humankind’s existence.

Your share of these vast OPPORTUNITIES may be embraced and used only by the way you relate yourself to TIME!

Are Heaven and Hell democracies? Does one get to vote?

I mostly agree... You can ascend and overcome the reincarnation cycle without material opulence... I'd actually say it's easier without the material, focusing on the mental and spiritual, on how you treat others and the planet around you

Until you become completely SELF-responsible for your results, you will continue to be frustrated with your lot in life.

So true... Taking responsibility for your life is the best thing you can do for yourself.
