I made it back to the cottage where the mountains meet the sea. I awoke at the witching hour. I stand by the patio door wanting to go for a swim but decide to astral travel to visit my one true friend. It's odd, this is the only way we see each other. If I actually showed up. I would be shot dead and dragged into the forest to be forgotten. My friend's family are moonshiners and don't cotton to strangers. Guess what I am indeed a stranger and I would be a dead stranger if I just appeared. Lol. So, to make a long story very short. Where there is a will there is away. With my black wolf in tow, never leave the cottage without her. We travel into the boundary between vails. We appeared on the road. She is running up to me jumps legs around my waist and squeezes. We talked of many things, walked with her to the market holding hands, bought her flowers and passionately kissed. I spent what seemed like hours with her and her with me.
I am back at the cottage drinking a really good cuppa joe. Smiling a smile knowing I am very lucky. The fire is crackling in the kitchen fireplace. I watch the western sky over the ocean slowly brighten. Hmmm, red sky in morning sailor take warning. I savor the moment and turn my thoughts to the day's work. I hear the echo of her song and wish.
Its a little after 0300 am here. Its cold Its hard Its dark and I have my cuppa Joe I lit a fire in the kitchen fire place, set a couple breakfast places for visitors and just having one hell of a deja vu. In the darkness the wind is howling the windchimes are being bashed around and the ocean is roaring. Wait is there a bang on the oak door I am just hearing things Another bang. I open the dutch door and my visitor arrives very mysterious wrapped in scarfs. i take her over to the table and bring her breakfast foods. Her intense eyes burn into my soul. This is my one true love. I am happy she is here more on that later. She speaks with her mind and heart. I listen from across the table. Awed by the story she is telling.
It is a story of fire and ice and here it is

I just woke up. My name is Jack and I had a hell of a night. Lets go back and look at it together. I had come down to the city to see a wine broker about my grapes that were to be harvested in a month He was in one of those nondescript building off of market down town by the ferry building fisherman wharf and the pier. Standing on his stoop lighting a cigarillo. I looked up the street and down the street toward the water and the bay. I heard giggling and saw them 10 saucy vamps stalking me standing behind the iron fencing that surrounded the building. Stepped off the stoop tossed the cigarillo, and ran like there was no tomorrow. Laughing they followed it was a starless night and the fog started to pile in on the piers. The gas lights are barely seen. I turned the corner jigged and jagged for all my life. These vamps were not going to catch Jack that is for sure by golly. Down an ally I ran. Their calls are echoed off the stone walls damp from the sea air and sea mist. Oh jack come play with us, oh jack we won't hurt you. oh jack we just want to hunt you. It was like a rhyme of a song I did not wish to sing. The alley ended at the end of a pier the inky water lapped the wooden pylons. Not thinking fully clothed I jumped into the water. Cold damn Cold. I tread water to build a little heat. From above the female vamps shrieked, cursed and pleaded. They never learned how to swim.
Bouncing up looking around I see the light at Fort Mason. I am thinking that I could grab a scallop boat from there and sail across the bay to Tiberon. I would have to watch for the tides and the whipsaw currents at the entrance of the bay. From there I would get my ride and head home to Glenn Ellen. Sounds like a good plan to me. I started side stroking away from the pier and all the noise of the city into the open water toward Fort Mason. For a starless night it was nice as far as being calm and a warm wind of the land. The closer I got to Fort Mason the bigger the waves were, I battled with the current. Grabbed a very slippery rock before being hit by the surf. Talk about being punched in the gut. I crawled on all fours until i reached solid ground. The extra water weight didn't help. I made it now to find a skiff I could "borrow",
"Hey you stop!" What the fu.. who is that I am thinking. I am in no mood to be messed with. From behind the seawall pops a private in his blues. His rifle impolitely pointed at me. "Who are you Sir Identify yourself." A Sargent runs up. "Stand down private." He turns to me, 'Identify yourself sir." He snapped uncivilly. Jack, Jack London, I replied curtly. "We have been waiting for you come this way."
Standing on the porch leaning against the porch column, watching the sun drop behind the redwoods. Eyes glistening. He had read a post by his oldest brother and it floored him. He was seven years old at the time. He had no idea.until his brother released it in a post. Earlier today. Let me have him tell you in his own words..."The box sat on the front hall table. Trying to equate its’ contents with anything was not possible. It was a box, full of my father’s ashes. Not ashes in the conventional sense, rather granular with small pieces of bone. 4 pounds of dust that only days before was a 180-pound man, my father. Brown cardboard box, what am I gonna do w/ you, and here’s what I did. I took the military issue 30-06 from the rifle rack on the library wall, loaded it, took the box off the table, and went outside. It was autumn and the light was bright and hard. I walked through the stubble of the meadow, to the pond that my father had bulldozed in a wet spot at the bottom of the field, now a large swimming hole, rimmed with cat-o-nine tails and seething with life. Here is where I stood, on its shore and I heaved the box into its center. There it bobbed. Charon’s boat on the Styx. pulling the corpse to the gate of another world, but wait, and I let a round go, into the heart of the enclosed ashes of my father. I fired until the clip was empty. The box was unsinkable. The red-wing blackbirds, resting in the bullrushes fled, the frogs jumped off their pads in mid croak, and dragonflies buzzed fitfully. I collapsed in the stubble and wept. The ripples collapsed in the reeds and pond life returned with a soothing hum. I was on my own. I knew, but to have my reality thrust so quickly in the tempering water was shocking at the least but the patience of the reeds and the swaying cat-o-nine tales settled in for the winter.' Any else experienced in those days by a 7 year boy who lost his hero became a dark quiet shadow and is written down and gone over from time to time To my Father and Oldest Brother I salute you... ready to. We have the watch now, Dad.
Walking down the road dark surrounding me in this island town. New Year Eve, a time of much joy, drinking, and dancing. Not for me I fear. I hear the soft rustle and clicking behind me, scrambling of something. I turn to check nothing there except parked cars and empty sidewalk. I walk a little faster, a chill dripping down my back. It is cold and all I have on is a green tee shirt and lightweight winter coat. My ll bean is safely stored in my ruck. Good place for it but I am not stopping. The clicking and chattering starting up again and now a very sexy deep woman's voice whispers a seduction song that doesn't make any sense. Again I stop and turn. Nothing but dark sidewalk trees and shrubs "Who is there come out", pulse racing fast. Time to go. I look down at my feet and see my shadow but I also see another shadow. "What have I gotten myself into." I mutter under my breath. I turn to continue. I don't get very far until I feel a cold hand caressing my neck I turn to see her ocean eyes. I fall deep within them. She whispers " I have you now." Her mouth brushes mine the scent of cinnamon ........There are no words only the cinnamon filling me. Your caresses, the stab of pain and then darkness.
Next morning I was kicked by a kid "hey mister wake up" I growled, felt cold and damp from sleep on the sidewalk in the rough. Oh help me I thought what the hell happened. There is an echo of a giggle and a woman's laughter but no one is there, I feel stinging in my neck I go to check, my hand has blood on it. Not good. I vomit in the gutter, retching and heaving. really not good. I have to find my way home. The little kid is watching. .I watch the kid. "Mister! she is coming!" What who is coming.""She is.' and he pointed down the street not far off. Her crimson cloak wrapped around a tight body, red hair down her back and ear piercings She came right up to my face put her hand on my shoulder and..."go now" she opened her lips cinnamon filled my head and I went into a dream.
i woke feeling just bad the worst hangover ever and i not in Alameda anymore. I am sitting in a field of stubble.I reach for my neck, Then hear the yelling and hollering. I look up and see a beautiful woman standing over me, eyes piercing my soul, her dark ember hair covering the smile on her face. "You made it," she said. I croaked, "yes i made it." But where. " Welcome to my realm would you want a spot of ...water I know you from a long time ago. I brought you here because we need your help. Will you help me. I watched this beautiful woman break down and plead with me. At this moment i would do anything to be with her. Yes, I WILL help you. Ok great you will become a psychic warrior.
whats that..I sipped my water, waited for an answer that wasn't going to come. A mist started to form over the field I had just walked through getting thicker and thicker. From the mist came a huge black wolf barrelling right at me. I sat there frozen the wolf ran up to the porch and jumped into my lap knocking me back against the wall. Yellow eyes looking into mine. "Good you have been accepted. This black wolf will be with you always ." Around the corner at full speed came a pack of white wolves clearly excited stopped short seeing the black wolf. The wolf howls of greeting started....The beautiful woman with ember cinnamon hair tickled my ear with her nicely moist tongue. she smelled of mint and evergreen from a day playing in the woods. I have something to say to you, She whispered, billions of words tickled my ear, my head exploded into infinity. So many things whispered. we drifted.
The alarm clock screams in my face, lying in bed. Half awake I reach over to turn off the alarm look at the calendar, not believing the date. I've been gone for six months. see the large black shape on the floor next to the bed The shape is breathing long deep breaths. two blood yellow are eyes watching me. " Well, aren't you getting up' said the voice coming from inside my head....The wolf jumped on the bed beside me. Put its big head on my chest and watched me. Slowly the wolf changed to a Lilith woman, a warrior princess, ember hair down to the small of her back, gold yellow eyes, her ears had pointed tips like a wolf. Her body smelled of evergreen and pine. She looked at me. In a deep sensuous voice ' what do you think" I am too amazed to speak. she reached down , squeezed and started stroking. My back arched. "we have one more thing to do" I hear her I hear her this is not a dream This is going to happen I exploded. She wouldn't leave me alone. Now all bets are off, her hair in swishing in my face the ember hair smelling of pine and evergreen. Her hips grinding. Her breathing shortening She exploded I exploded. again, She wants more insatiable we go until the sun sets. Finally lying in each others arms. Mated for eternity... "Wait till the pups come." What" she laughed at the expression on my face. Loving it Howling her wolf howl.... "come on we have work to do"...
"A couple of things,Jack I call you Jack." Thinking through the fog Hey that's not really my name. "First, No one can see me except you, so no animated conversations with hands waving all over the place in public. People will think you're nuts." Second, I am always with you even when I'm not. Our bond can not be broken Ok got that." I said, "ok" not knowing why, this woman is definitely ok thoughts drifting. "Where is the car." I pointed to the newly repaired Jag xls in front of us. "Perfect", she cood. .....Her mouth and warm breath fill my ear. " Let me drive. you need the rest." I nodded, "keys in my front pocket." I can barely move such a fog I was in. Her golden eyes meet mine. A quick tickle in the down below. She drew out the keys. "YES!" Excited-- the Jag roared to life. I smiled and mumbled "Be gentle Hun." "Never!"
I am watching the early morning sky. The sun is not up but the red glow is turning to a deeper red. An omen that all sailors know. Take warning a storm is a brewing.
She laughed thrilled to be driving a big fast powerful car. Jack looks at her amazed, at her beauty, the scenery is whipping by her window. Where we going? 700 miles north of here..how many gas tanks does your jag have. Two- EXCELLENTE!....
Oui cranked the Jag into overdrive. The jag reached overdrive speed all 12 cylinders humming . "Jack sit back and enjoy the ride," We zipped up the 101. the road turns From 4 lane to a two lane to one lane highway in the redwoods. Can't tell if they are second growth or originals. The redwoods are enormous. Gentle giants, whispering to each other and to any that want to listen. On the curve, I go into shock and grab my seat hard. It was here more than thirty years ago where I flew off the road, avoiding a big porcupine prehistorically big ending up in the stone gravel bordering the tar road. The chevy chevette's , just bought and brand new, small tires got caught up in the gravel on the side of the road beyond that was a gorge 30-40 ft deep. My first wife and stepson were asleep. The car slipped over the edge. Ended up on its side up side down in a tree branch nothing below. At this point I am checking for broken bones bleeding, everyone is awake and wailing. Got to get out of the car and on solid ground. The passenger door was pointed in skyward direction. I turned the car off cranked down the window and helped Roger, the stepson who was only eight and barely awake, up through the window next was Lina, soon to be ex wife. "Is everyone ok!" the chp officer was lighting flares and tied off the car to the tree it was caught in. I was last one out. A big hand reached in through the window and pulled me out. "Tow truck is coming. what happened" I gave the officer my credentials and told him. He had blankets for us to wrap in against the morning chill.
Man it was dark. The tow truck came yanked the car from the tree branch. It was a total write off. With some tape holding the wind shield in it was drivable. The roof was crushed a bit. but no leaks. We made a u-turn and headed back to the island town. Shuddering, I look at Oui" Slow down now." She had a look of knowing, You got it, Jack. We slowed down.....
The next bit is really confusing so here goes. Oui looked at me. Fear and great sadness filled her eyes. Her heart shattered. Jack is dead. Oui stops the car. Gravel spitting everywhere. She gets on the phone "Lady, Jack's dead what should I do?" The reply over the phone,"Damn How long?"...
"This is just plain sad" " Why is Oui bawling." A black range rover sport pulls up, all very dark tinted windows. The red headed woman that first bite me rushes toward me and cradles my head "What the fu..." Everything goes black.
Jack is alive but only by a thread. She wept. She knew she was the cause of this His death. The lady with the red hair looked at Oui. who was a hot mess by this time "Oui, Oui snap out of it we don't have any time . Get Jack in the back to the rover. The lady stood at the back of the rover with the door open. Oui gently picked up the body and softly placed him on the cargo mat in the back. The lady jumped in after....
.....I drifted in and out. Oui bite me..That woke me up. The three sisters watching me suddenly move up. The sky outside the range rover was a steel grey, just about to rain. "What!" The lady said, "Welcome back Jack." They smiled and laughed uproariously.
