-Nightshade-
It was an eternal winter, cold and black as death. The snow was light like butterfly wings, fluttering and dancing their way down to the frozen slate. The evergreens were dripping with it along the edges of the branches, on the outskirts of the North Kingdom.
I had never gotten this far out, I’ve never been past the kingdom walls, yet here I was in the middle of the Ghost Forest. It was close to midnight and the lights and music from inside the Grand Ballroom were still brightly glowing out and onto the snow. The crunching of it under my feet was something odd enough on its own, since I had always loved it, but was never aloud to touch or play in it. My mother believed it was magical pixy dust, that would pull you away from safety and into danger, but that was just her.
I did not know where my feet were brining me and I didn’t care. I followed the river, half frozen among the wasteland of dead trees and spruces. The air was crisp and clean, intoxicating pine laced cotton. The further I went in the darker it became, and I was thinking of going back. Is that a light in the distance? I thought squinting my eyes past the snowflakes and naked trees. I turned back to my kingdom that was now lost between me and the heavy snowfall, I could see the lights from the ballroom no longer. I turned again to what was in front of me and a shadow graced my path, pulling all air from my lungs, I stood, frozen like the branches thinking that it might not find me.
Turning my heel and starting to walk back along the rivers edge I watched the forest, it was following me, the shadow. I stopped looking at it closer, it was no shadow, but a man, tall and cloaked behind the darkness. “Who dares frighten me?” I declared. It said nothing, but moved closer. Causing me to step back starting to descend into the river as it grabbed my arm, and pulled me to his chest, saving me from a slow death of hyperthermia. “You should be more careful Princess.” the stranger cooed at me from under his hood, he was much taller then me and all I could see were his lips, and the bottom of his chin which resembled in color, a ghostly tan. Perfection.
“You should return back to your castle my Lady, they must be worried sick about you,” he spoke out seeming so concerned. His crimson lips curled up and into a dull smile, which for him seemed like a painful act to conduct. “How dare you tell me what to do?!” I exclaimed in rage. He simply just chuckled at me as if I told a funny joke, and pulled my chin up with is hand, the leather of his glove separating any skin contact. “You are quite the fireball aren’t you?” he said grinning brighter then ever. I looked down which only caused him to pull my head back up yet again, this time more forceful “Aren’t you?!” he said demanding an answer. “Yes,” I spit out under my breath, as I moved my hand to pull back his hood, his hands catching mine first, “No, no Princess” he said mocking me as if I was a child. I know at this point the rage was all over my face since he let out a low chuckle again. “You get so angry when you don’t get your way, but don’t worry my Lady you will know me soon enough,” he whispered leaning into me. And by the time that I blinked again he was gone.
