Short Story: Wisdom of the Feeble

09:34 Aug 05 2014
Times Read: 358

A wise man is standing in the lecture hall of a major college giving a lecture; his very first words from his mouth would he the typical quote of the hour. As these words roll from his tongue there is a faint accent of Scottish heritage. "Wisdom is the key to the mind, where knowledge is power." he explains.

His body posture is positive and stern; he stands not behind the podium but instead beside it. Is eyes glance around the audience to catch, both the atmosphere, and the aura of those sitting in the seats. He goes on saying. "Many know this but what comes next is where many become baffled and confused." "Through that knowledge is where you must decide your outcome." A student raises his hand, with a confused tone and asks. "Sir! What do you mean by decide your outcome?"

The speaker nods to the student and smiles. "Let me give an example of this, but first let me ask you a question... and let me see hands. How many here traveled a long way to get to college?" Ten out of the twenty students raised their hands. The man goes on. "Ok half, on your journey you pass a wreak, lets say a car and an Amish horse and carriage was stuck in the ditch, and you could only save one person. Whom would it be? The lady in the car, or the old man in the carriage?"

The student who raised his hand answered. "Ok, I would not know unless I knew the condition of the accident." The man nods and looks at the podium. "Ok, the lady is suffering a headache from whiplash but there is an engine fire starting, where the Amish man is bleeding from part of the carriage going through his arm. To make things worse his horse ran away." The man then picks up the podium and takes it to the side curtain. "I will give you a moment to think about this." A roar of talking fills the room as he gives the podium to the prop master in the back.

When he comes back the man raises his hand and gestures to stop talking. "Ok, times up. Given the circumstances that transpire, would you save the Amish man or the beautiful blond?" The student replies. "I would save the man." The student held a slight blank reflection in his eyes, as if the answer was in truth a question. The man shrugs. "Your answer is logical but you are missing one key term. What you don't know is the man is a doctor There is a fire extinguisher in the car and the lady is struggling to stay conscious, now that you know this what would you do?" The student thinks again and looks to a lady who is sitting beside him. "What would you do Ma'am?" He asks her.

The lady looks at the speaker and at the man. "This is one question that has many answers. First I would check on the man and see if he is ok, then I would rush to the lady and pull her out of the car. Once the lady is save I would put out the fire with the fire extinguisher as the lady helps the man."

The student looks at the lady and asks. "I would have never thought of that, how did you come up with that?" The speaker smiles and answers for the lady. "Because this is that lady and the man beside you is that Amish man. Ladies and gentlemen the aspect is that everyone gets stuck in one perspective. You have to think outside the box, not within it."
