Put yourself in the position of my ancestors. America wasn't the name of a continent. It was the name of the explorer who was part of a process that "took our land". To some of the currently existing cultures, any reference to being "American" is disrespectful. Each culture is different, so each culture accepts or rejects your nomenclature based on their needs and desires.
That said, most indigenous people I know don't care what they're called; in academia 10 years ago people referred to the entire "American and Mexican Indian" cultures as First Nations because it's the most PC term. However, First Nations really refers to Canadian indigenous cultures.
Another thing I found completely very sad during this time in my life : Dying languages. Imagine being the last one to know a language and it dies with you. That's so strange to me. Trying to teach new generations a language that only a handful of people will ever know? The younger generations often don't see the point, so that aspect of the culture dies with the last member. We are trying to stop that and to teach the languages.

I would suggest only call someone by their cultural or tribe name if you know for a fact they were of that culture or tribe. There's a world of difference between the lives and ethos of the Tlingut and the Anasazi.
One of my favorite courses when I was in collage was Cultural Anthro - if you are currently in collage and have space for an elective, take it! It's probably really good at your school.
I wish everyone would watch this...before modern medicines came from the across the pond, my people and all native nations used ONLY for healing plants provided to us by Mother Earth...and a way of life; these plants and our way of life worked. Now many of these plants are endangered our way of life was taken from us. In this movie it proves certain plants and certain life changes cure diseases.

I've just finished watching this, I've always been interested in the healing powers of plants and herbs, shamanism and basically just spirituality and healing in general. The correlation between thought patterns and disease, etc...
I should kick myself in the ass for not developing this interest for healing plants further, as I regret it with every year that passes me by.
I often wish I'd have the opportunity to go on such a journey, and experience the life where people are still so very much in touch with nature and the knowledge of it and learn from them.
I think it's sad that in this modern world today we've lost that connection to the Earth, ourselves and a harmonious way of living. Instead we have stress, chaos, disease, both mental and physical and many have come to accept it as something that is normal... and still dare call this beautiful way of living primitive, unnatural even. How absurd, it would almost be funny, it it weren't so sad.
I agree Purple. It is a tragedy what we have lost in the name of progress. I also truly believe pharmaceutical companies do NOT want cures for disease like cancer because look at the billions of dollars they make selling pills. People being sick and dying is a big business for them.
