Well.....to try and make a long story short. Matt, my significant other, was born without the ability to drain brain fluid down his spinal column. (yep...I wasn't aware of this bodily function either until I met him) So, he was fitted with a "pump" (aka shunt) that drained it for him via a tube into his abdominal cavity. He has had 3...one when he was born, the second, when he was four (that he had until he was 29). The second one failed in Feb 02. The doctors at that time said that if he had been brought into emergency only half an hour later, he'd have died.
He was fitted with his third one. One that we were told would last a long time.
Well....he started having symptoms. Symptoms that it was failing again...
Everytime we took him to emergency, they would do a CT scan...say nothing looked out of the ordinary and send him home.
We finally went to UW-Madison Hospital for a second opinion. On Wednesday, Madison gave Matt a radioactive isotope test (can't remember the technical name for it). They basically shot the shunt full of glowing goo to see if it was working...and it wasn't. BIG surprise!
Matt was given the choice of having surgery there or here in La Crosse. He decided here so that his family could be there. Madison told him that they had arranged it. That the local hospital was expecting him and to get back to La Crosse ASAP.
So, two and half hours later....he gets to the local hospital. Only to find out that they had no idea he was coming!
They decided to do their own CT scan...which of course (they said) showed nothing out of the ordinary that they could see. We had to wait until they could confirm the test results with Madison before they agreed to the surgery.
Which he, thankfully, survived and is ok....they completely replaced the shunt. He was awake and talking shortly after the surgery.
Now he is talking with me on the phone....bored as hell :)
She's pretty :P
You scored as Romantic Goth. You are a romantic goth, better known as a traditional goth. You are probably quickly identified as a goth by outsiders. Black lace, bats, and moonlit cemetaries are just a few of your favorite things. Click on my name to take my other tests if you liked this one.
