If you can only see one film in your entire life, I would recommend “Kick-ass”. Quite frankly its one of the best films I have ever seen.
Plot wise it is really fairly generic, boy gets it into his head he wants to be a super hero, and along the way he makes some friends, some enemies, gets the girl, and hangs up the cape. However it is the way in which this story is told that makes it so utterly unique from any other comic book movie. It is very much a black comedy, and incredibly well paced, with very gory or shocking sequences being superbly mixed with very funny moments, leading to the audience having just enough time to linger on the incredibly graphic brutality (and believe me, it is very very graphic in places), before being treated to a side splitting laugh, made all the funnier because you were already in shocked mode.
The casting could not be better, using little known Aaron Johnson as the lead. Aaron is a British actor, but with an American accent so good it fooled the director....although he himself is British so maybe he was just having an off day. He acts the part giftedly with incredible comic timing, a real treat. And of course Nicholas Cage in the role of “Big Daddy” was absolutely brilliant! Such an incredibly dark, yet light hearted character, played with such incredible enjoyment, you could really see that these guys were just having so much fun! Also Hit-Girl was so good, every single one of her scenes was amazing!
The only down side to the movie was that it really did nothing new or exiting with the superhero concept, however the way the story was told was just so fantastic that I find it difficult not to heartily recommend it to everyone I see.
