The other night there was a race to the top of the climbing log. Both big crabs were at a stalemate, as there was not room at the very top for them both, so they just sort of sat there half way up and watched each other.
The smaller of the two managed to squeeze to the top of the log and sat there triumphantly. Clawde tried to dislodge him, but was not able to. He rather grumpily settled down just beneath the top perch.
Then....Jamie relaxed a little, and quick as a flash, Clawde knocked him off the top. There wa a clunk as Jamie's big shell banged against the side of the tank on the way down, and he landed upside down, with claws flailing. I quickly set him rightside up, while the sneaky Clawde scuttled to the top perch and stayed there for the evening.
I don't know what happened after I went to bed, but when I woke up next morning, the climbing log was upended, and all the extra shells were scattered all around. Someone either had a party, or a tantrum!
This oughta be good. Both big crabs are trying to be the first to the top of the climbing log. There is only room for one of them up there.
I may have to mediate. Will post results later.
Bought some new sand and treats for the crabs at the pet shop today. Clawde must have known something was up because he was balancing on the tip of his shell, waving his claws when I was trying to clean out the tank. He had already tried to climb up the underside of the climbing log, tipping it over in the process.
After I changed the sand and put the treats in, I thought I would spend a little one on one time with the big guy, so I picked him up and placed him gently in the palm of my right hand.
He pinched me.
I do not recommend the pinch of a large purple pincher crab to anyone, particularly when it pinches you on the soft pad of flesh at the base of your fingers. Luckily he didn't hang on, he just pinched and let go, but it was enough to take my breath away. He didn't want to be handled, so I put him back in the tank.
What follows was a full-blown crab tantrum. Clawde tipped over the food dish, pulled the water dish over, and dragged the climbing log across the tank, scattering the little crabs in the process. He gumpily settled into a corner, dug himself a goodsized hole, and watched everything.
Wow. It isn't even a full moon!
Four little crabs plus two big crabs all trying to be the one in the corner.....is a big crab pile up! Little crabs on top of big crabs, trying to wedge right into the smallest niche, and the big crabs all nonchalant about the little ones playing piggyback.
Gordon, one of my little crabs, had toddled off to a far corner of the tank and dug himself a nice hole. The little crabs often do that, they like to have a little spot to themselves sometimes.
I peeked at him this afternoon..and much to my surprise he had moulted! He had kicked out the old exoskeleton and the claws and bits were right next to him. Inside his shell, he was all curled up, resting from his big adventure.
I was so proud of the little guy. It's quite strenuous for them to go through that. He had recently changed to a bigger shell, so he must have known he was due for a moult!
Just had some one on one time with Clawde, my biggest crab. I hold him and he climbs all over my hands, never pinching, just wandering around and exploring. I talk to him and tell him what a good boy he is, and he took a bit of apple from me.
After I set him back in the tank, he sat there and faced me and just looked at me. I wondered what would happen if I put my hand down beside him, so I did...and he climbed right onto it.
Aww..he wanted some more mommy time. (He got it, too.)
One of the little crabs discovered the fruit bits I just put in the food dish. The other bigger crabs are distracted by trying to be the first to get to the top of the climbing logs, so the little guy strolls over to the dish for breakfast.
He spies the chunk of cranberry...touches it...rolls it over..hoists himself up into the food dish for a closer look. The biggest claw comes out and he delicately tears off a bit and starts to eat. He explored each of the other fruits I had put in there (apple, pear, mango) and had a little feast.
The bigger crabs never even noticed.
Happily satisfied, the little guy paused for a drink, then toddled off to the corner to rest after his little feeding frenzy.
They are so cute to watch.
