Crab Stuff

Recently I bought some stuff for my crablets from the PetCo website. The stuff I wanted wasn't available at my local pet shops so I went online. PetCo is brilliant, by the way...order was processed and shipped to me within three days.

I got some crab salt for their bathing water dish, and something called water pillows. These are little plastic inflatable cushions which you fill with warm water, and put in the crab tank. They act like a combination mini heating pad and raft for the crabbies, which love the moist heat source. I filled up four of them and put them in, and scooted the crabs over so they could inspect the new items.

The biggest one tested the pillow, touching it gently with his big claw. It was warm! and soft! He climbed right on top and snuggled down. The little ones were more hesitant, until they felt how warm the pillows were. Two little crabs could fit on one pillow, and they all got aboard. I was tickled.

I also bought something called Neapolitan crab cookies. These are teeny little discs of flavored food, strawberry, vanilla and chocolate, that you mix in with their regular food. One little crab saw me putting something in the food dish, and climbed down off his water pillow to come inspect.

He picked up one strawberry disc and turned it over and over. He took a crab-sized bite. Yummy! The other flavors were sampled, but it was obvious he liked the strawberry best, he found all the little red discs and kind of scooted them to one side of the dish. I could almost hear a tiny little crab cackle as he enjoyed the treat.

When I went to bed, they were all snuggled atop their water pillows. I think they like them.

Such pampered lil guys. Warm pillows, flavored and delicious food, good baths. It's a resort!

Crab Stuff

One of my crabs learned a new trick. I had bought another, smaller water dish for the tank and keep it filled with fresh water, so now they have three places to drink or bathe, two with salt water and one with fresh.

One little crab learned that by pushing down on one edge of the water dish, he can tip it up, and the water runs out into a little pool in the sand. Crabs LOVE this, they love digging in moist sand and burying themselves in it. So this little guy is in crab heaven. He scooched around in the pool of water/sand and buried himself in it up to the tip of his shell top. I filled the little dish back up again and put it a ways away from him, so he could have his privacy.

Another crab toddled over and started to step into the fresh water dish. It wobbled and sloshed over to one side, and the crab got a little water on him. I could almost hear him thinking. He pushed down on the edge of the dish and woop! All the water rolled out, and now two crabs had made little pools for themselves.

I thought they could use some new stimulation, so I took apart a toy my parakeet wasn't interested in, and strung together some little blocks and a bell, and during the night I could hear this "tinkle tinkle" coming from the crab tank. I couldn't resist, I went to see what was going on. I crept up very slowly, and there were two little crabs dragging the toy around. One was playing with the bell.

Amazing.
