Last night my big crab, Clawde, decided to have a bath. He takes up the whole water dish. He just got in there and had a good time. Meanwhile, one of the little crabs, Gordon, was watching kind of forlornly off to one side..he wanted in the water dish too, but what chance did he have with the big guy in there?
Little by little, Gordon made his way to the water dish. He strolled around the outside and finally paused at the end where the smallest tip of Clawde's shell rested. Bit by bit, that little crab, no bigger than a quarter, wedged himself under the tip of the big crabs shell and slowly pushed it up and over, so the little guy could get in the water dish too.
Made me think of that song: "what can make that little old ant think he can move a rubber tree plant..everyone knows an ant can't move a rubber tree plant."
But by gosh, the little guy got his bath at last!
I stirred things up in the crab house tonight. I changed the sand in one end of the tank. I took out the big guy and let him roam around while I did this. Everytime I change the sand in there it gets him all stirred up, I suppose the new smells are different to him and it takes awhile to get used to.
He made a circuit of the tank when I put him back in, and went to the corner where the 3 little guys were snoozing peacefully. He wanted THAT corner, so he scooped/pushed them out and settled into their warm spot. Like a worried mama I got them out and put them into another corner. After a few moments they decided they'd rather be with their big friend, so one by one they trooped back to the corner where the big guy was industriously digging around, and joined him. It's fun to watch how the little ones snuggle up to the big guy, and they all settle down to have a group nap.
This weekend, I will change the sand in the other end of the tank. Hopefully things will be calmed down by then. They need new sand a couple times a year, to make things all sanitary in there. Actually they make more mess in their water dishes than they do in the sand, crabs don't make much waste matter at all.

How do you know they're asleep? Maybe there's some sort of communication going on between them. Do they make any sounds?
They do make sounds, yes, and communicate with each other. The sound they make is like a cross between crickets chirping and a squeaking rocking chair. They seem to do it just as a happy noise.
When they are asleep they pull all the way into their shells. They doze and nap off and on during the day and are most active at night.
You know what, you could make a living selling cute little hermit crabs. Goodness knows you've made me adamant to get one or two.
i saw some in a pet store once and thought they'd be neat. According to you they really are! i want one. Or two. It needs a friend right?
Oh yes. You should always get more than one. Hermit crabs live in groups, so they like to have other buddies around. And they all get along, no matter what size they are.
They are hypoallergenic, cheap to keep, and easily tamed. They grow on ya. I love mine!

The other two little ones are Micky and Tony, named after a couple friends of mine on yahoo. Gordon is, of course, for Gordon Ramsay. And Clawde..well that came out of thin air lol.
