Ch... ch... ch... Changes!

08:16 Jun 17 2010
Times Read: 755

Well, I did it. Finally. Something that I bet most people that have visited my profile over the years thought would likely never, ever happen.

After 4-1/2 years on VR, I took the plunge and changed my background. lol This may not seem like a big deal, but anyone who truly knows me, will tell you that this IS a big deal... at least, for me.

I'm a creature of habit and I don't usually take to change very well. However, I was compelled to do something a little different to my profile... and I have never really worked with style sheet coding before, so that in itself was a pretty intense experience for me.

All in all, I think it looks pretty snazzy. I'm really glad I gave "CAJOME" a new look - at least background-wise. And now, I'm off to bed... feeling pretty pleased with myself, too. :)

Pride and Prejudice

My youngest son had a very proud moment this evening. He cooked dinner for all of us. That wasn't such a big deal... all 3 of my sons know how to cook, and very well, too, I might add. The "big deal" about tonight's dinner was that the main ingredient - zucchini - was grown in our backyard, in a garden created by my youngest son.

He'd been working on "a project" for a couple of weeks prior to school being out for the summer (yes, Alice Cooper came to my mind, too), but he didn't tell me what that project was, until he was ready to take it to the next level.

Because I seem to always be working, and usually come home pretty exhausted, I don't venture out into our backyard much... not like I used to do, back in the days when I was a stay-at-home mom. So, when he asked me to come out back and see what he'd been working on, I had absolutely no idea. I was very surprised -and impressed - with all the work he had put into clearing out this particular corner of the yard, turning the soil and building a barrier around it.

*Please note: The barrier had to be tortoise proof. Please view LadyKrystalynDarkstar's profile for a glimpse of "Godfrey", our African Sulcata tortoise. Trust me... he's a lot more destructive than he looks... like a Sherman tank!

But, I digress... sort of.*

I have ALWAYS shown an interest in the things that my kids got into. Actually, I probably swayed their thinking to like the things I did, when I was a child. I followed in my father's footsteps - he enlightened me and my brother to things we might otherwise had taken for granted, or simply not paid attention to. I've shared my fascination with many number of things (some much to the dismay of my ex-husband), because I wanted to expand the way my kids viewed the world. Knowledge is power, as is awareness and appreciation for certain "gifts of life", rights and privileges.

When my son proudly showed off his hard work to me, I was anxious to keep that momentum going and to get him moving to the next step. So, we went to a couple of nurseries and garden centers and picked up some packs of relatively newly sprouted vegetable plants: zucchini, tomatoes (regular & cherry), 3 hot pepper plants and an artichoke, some marigolds, mulch, manure, gardening gloves, plant fertilizer spikes and some plastic flower pots. Since then, he's done an amazing job at maintaining the container gardens on our front porch... full of herbs for cooking - rosemary, basil, thyme, 2 kinds of parsley, cilantro, and oregano. He even made a homemade pizza using several of the aforementioned herbs. Another proud moment. :) There are also containers of geraniums, marigolds, and coleus, and a strawberry plant. We've also purchased an apple tree (that originally had a tiny apple on it - which was THE selling point for me - as well as a fig tree... which already has tiny figs developing on it... w00t!

After dinner, my son said to me that his garden had come full circle. He'd tended it carefully... watering faithfully, fertilizing, weeding and trimming as needed to encourage growth. He watched and waited patiently, as the zucchinis began to appear and then seem to double in size every day. He carefully cut the 2 largest off the plant, and then we went shopping for the rest of the ingredients for one of his favorite meals... a meal that I had always been the one to make - until tonight. I had him do all the prep work - washing the veggies, chopping them to the proper size, and talking him through the process of making the dish. He placed the casserole dishes (there were 2... they were small) in the oven and, when they were done, he removed them and dished out the first helping for himself. After him, his brothers quickly dished theirs and I proudly got a helping for myself. After the first bite, I had to agree with my son... it was the best tasting zucchini we'd ever had.

Tonight, my son was very proud of himself and all that he'd accomplished. But, no one was more proud than me. :)

It's not who you know, but who knows you.

A friend told me that once, and I found it to be very profound.

Think about it. :)

I've always said, it's not who you know, but how willing you are to use them to your advantage....

...but that was a more cynical me...
