The Scent of a Predator

The phone rang with a sense of urgency, waking the doe up from a dead sleep. She reached out and slid her finger across the screen in order to answer it.
"H-Hello?" Chloe said, really groggy-like. The paranormal investigator snuck a glance at her bedside clock which read two forty five am. "This had better be important. I'm losing out on some spectacular beauty sleep." Her brain was desperately trying to form coherent sentences to carry on a some what decent conversation. From the other end of the line came Amanda's voice. Amanda was Chloe's long time otter friend who also happened to be on the police force.

"Chloe! Thank god. I've been trying to get through to you for the last half hour. I was about ready to come and kick your apartment door down." Chloe was instantly awake as she detected the sound of terror in her friend's voice. Amanda wasn't one to scare easily, despite her species.
"Amanda? What's wrong? What's happened?" Chloe asked calmy, trying to reassure her friend as much as she could.
""I didn't know who else to call, Chlo. I mean, you're the only one I know that deals with stuff like this, so naturally I turned to you. The department's in trouble. We bit off more than we could chew. We brought someone in last night drenched in blood. She was found standing over the mutilated corpse of Mr Tanner. The old Irish sheep dog that used to own Maud's bakery. You know, the one we used to go to as kids? Well this tigress had no memory of doing anything to him, all she knew was she blacked out and when she came to, she was standing over his corpse and we had her in cuffs."
For some reason, the blood in Chloe's veins began to run cold as her otter friend continued. "I was wondering if you could come down and-" The otter was cut off by someone in the background yelling "No! Don't!" and Chloe heard Amanda yell quickly yell into the phone. "Dammit! She's out!" and the phone banged a few times before finally being cut off. It didn't take Chloe long to get up and out of bed, get dressed, grab her smokes and keys and get to her car.
Chloe arrived at the police station in record time. It only took her fifteen minutes to get from her downtown apartment to the police station on the outskirts of the west end of the city. It was a wonder she hadn't been pulled over, as the only time she'd taken her foot off the gas was to go around sharp corners. She'd run roughly fifteen red lights by her count, in her panic to get to her friend. Outside the cop shop, she slammed on the breaks and as a result, she made skid marks about half a block in length as the vehicle came to a complete stop at the bottom of the stairs. She quickly pulled the gun her grandfather had given her from the glove box that she kept loaded all the time and got out of the car. She locked it and looked up at the building. All of the lights were off. She sighed, shook her head and headed towards the stairs heading to the front door.
Reaching the top of the stairs, she opened the door, wary of what may lay behind it, but the door gave her no resistance and as she stepped inside, she was bathed in darkness. Only a dim light permeated the room and it took her eyes a few moments to adjust. As they adjusted, she was able to make out certain things like dark smears over the walls and central desk which seemed to have large bulky objects sitting on it. As her eyes adjusted a little further, she had to forcibly stop herself from throwing up. The dark smears on the wall were blood. The large bulky object on the desk was actually the body of a cop who hadn't seemed to be fast enough.
The smell made her stomach not only coil in fear, but it felt like it was doing cartwheels inside of her. It smelled like death, destruction and despair. This smell was never going to come out of her fur. God dammit. Her mother had warned her of this kind of work before, but she had been rather adamant that it fascinated her.
She stepped towards the desk, keeping an eye out for any surprises along the way and her gun pointed ahead of her. On top of this gun was a pen light. It wasn't much, but it could provide a bit of illumination of she needed it. As she got closer to the desk, she could hear a soft pitter-patter coming from the other side. Grimacing and bracing herself, she walked around to the other side, her ears flicking in morbid anticipation. There was a pool of blood dripping down the desk and on to the floor. All she could do was just stand there and stare for a moment, before the salad she'd had for supper a few hours before decided to make a less glorious re-appearance. She voided the contents of her stomach and took a moment to gather herself.
Looking around the room, she saw that there were three hallways. What was at the end, she couldn't tell, so she flicked on the pen-light and took another look. She still couldn't tell. The hallway in front of her went on so far that her light didn't reach it.
She moved toward the hallway in front of her and crossed the threshold, blood lined the walls on both side like someone's very disturbed paintings. It was almost like they had the intention of re decorating. Slowly, she progressed further down the hall until she came to a door. She gripped the door knob in her hand and slowly turned. One could not be too careful.
The door swung open and revealed an empty room. Things look disheveled and a mess of papers all over the floor, but there didn't seem to be anything overly gruesome about this room, which she found kind of odd. She backed up out of the room and closed the door, continuing down the hallway. There were a couple of more rooms, one containing a couple of dead bodies with their throats ripped out. She took a moment to calm her stomach and continued to the end of the hall, where she came to two sets of stairs. One led up and the other led down. Chloe stopped for a moment and let her ears swivel, trying to piuck up any sounds that she could, but to no avail.
Wait a minute. What was that?
SHe was pretty sure she heard something coming from the stairs heading down. *Well, that's one problem solved* she thought to herself, realizing the decision on which way to go had just been decided for her. She set one hoof on the stairs heading down and sighed inwardly, getting herself ready to head in to the bowels of hell itself.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Depressing, disturbing and darkness were the scents that encompassed her nose.
Chloe felt her hoof touch the bottom step and she immediately recoiled. She had stepped in something soft and squishy. She flicked on the small pen light on top of her side arm and had to stifle a scream. She was standing in someone's entrails. Where the rest of their body was, she had no idea. A shuffling could be heard from somewhere in the distance, but her pen light didn't extend that far, so she couldn't see anything past a couple of meters.
The doe decided to stop for a moment at the base of the stairs and listen. She was glad she did because up ahead in the darkness she heard Amanda speaking in a soft, strained voice.
"Chloe? Is that you?" Something was wrong with her voice.
Chloe's heart which was beating rapidly began to try and beat out of her chest.
"Yeah, I'm here. Where are you?" She asked,
"I'm at the end of the hallway. Don't get too close. Something's happened to me. I'm changing. "
Chloe had known the otter since they were both children. She'd never once known Amanda to sound like this, even if she was terrified. Something was definitely up.
Slowly, Chloe started her forward movement again, moving further and further down the hallway. Her light illuminated a little more with each passing step, showing more and more of the blood drenched walls. As she moved, the tension within her grew. Every so often, Amanda called out to lead her in the right direction, her voice sounding more and more strained the closer the doe got to her.
After what seemed like an eternity, Chloe's pitiful light fell on a very familiar pair of shoes. The female deer recognized them instantly due to the fact that she'd bought the otter the exact same pair for the previous holiday season.
"STOP!!"
Chloe heard Amanda's voice ring out sharp, crisp, cold and predatory. This definitely wasn't the otter she knew. "Don't come any closer! I might not be able to stop myself." Her voice had a slight edge of command and panic in it.
"What do you mean? What's going on, Amanda?" Chloe asked, slightly frightened. "Tell me how to help you."
It was at that moment that Amanda struggled to stand up and groaned with the effort, but something still wasn't quite right. It was like she was bent over slightly in pain. "I....I can smell you, Chloe." said the otter uncertainly. "I can hear your blood coursing through your veins. It's hypnotic...." she trailed off slowly. She sounded strained though, as if she was using everything she had in order to not move.
Chloe slowly raised the light up her friend's body.
As the light traveled up her friend's body, Chloe gasped. She wasn't looking at the friendly and playful otter she'd known growing up., Amanda's posture and body language had clearly changed. She held herself a little more aggressively now. The light traveled up Amanda's body and Chloe saw that the otter was holding her stomach as if in pain. The doe winced at the sight of it and moved the light up further. That's when she noticed her friend was trembling.
When she reached the otter's face, Chloe stopped cold. It felt like her blood was freezing in her veins. She was looking into the face of a monster. Blood red eyes decorated the face she was looking into, almost like they were pulsing and glowing. They screamed of blood, death and decay. The doe twitched involuntarily, every instinct within her body screaming at her to run.
The thing that drew Chloe's attention thought was the fact that her friend sported a pair of sharp, and pearly white new fangs
