The Things We'll Believe

09:46 Feb 16 2009
Times Read: 674

And somehow, no matter how often the truth emerges, we keep selling ourselves on the same impossible yet desired beliefs.

-- The Leaping Gnome

- I do like stories about your cat

- Baggage is part of the package. I want the whole package.

Richard J. Colangelo; died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, at the age of 49.

Richard Jeni was always one of my favorites. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live in Boston about 10 years ago...

...like Bill Hicks and Sam Kinison... excellent commedian with an incredible way of making the every day obvious that we miss, obvious again...

...and a flame extinguished too soon.

Illness of the mind takes even the great ones- sometimes it takes them more frequently.

A wonderful example of talent that was taken far too soon.

Today VR suffers a great loss. Were the last whale to vanish from the Earth, how many of us would notice? And yet, such losses, whether noted or not, shatter a major piece of our world.

Ratings

09:22 Feb 11 2009
Times Read: 712

I can't imagine a time or form of my life which could be so fulfilled that I might find myself sufficiently content as to hold the slightest concern for anyone's rating practices.

If ratings are a big deal, you are indeed fortunate; are you not?

Perhaps you shall die tomorrow as one lost and forgotten on a deserted planet, so distant and isolated as to have little more than a memory of Earth, life or humanity. And no one was looking.

Screw rating. Your posts to the main forum bring me much more enjoyment. ;)

A: I have withered and the health has withdrawn from my lungs.

B: Quick then, allow that I kill thee a chicken!

This makes sense?

Opinions verses Evidence

18:47 Feb 07 2009
Times Read: 744

It seems whenever a difference of beliefs arises, there are some who will suggest that it's simply a difference of opinion. Sometimes they're right. Where the evidence has spoken, it's no longer a matter of opinion.

That would depend on who brings forth what evidence at any given time...*grins*.

Yeah.... I hate that in arguments.

"Well that's your opinion."

I love being able to say that something is my opinion, because it also means that I stated just that, and maybe I'm wrong.

For example: Baseball sucks.

I'm likely missing your point, Sinora, but I can offer only that it is the quality of the evidence which counts and that's independent from who presents it.

Baseball? Football? They both spend most of their time just standing or sitting around. Cyclists, on the other hand (you knew that was coming), change clothes, eat and even take care of nature's call, from the bike. Five hours of racing means, five hours of racing.

A choice?

The politician tells us what we want to hear and is continually berated for lying.

The scientist tells us what can be demonstrated to be true and is continually berated for not telling us what we want to be true.

The diplomat tells us a version of what can be demonstrated to be true, in a way that sounds like what we want to believe.

The politician and the diplomat are revered by the majority for their deception. The scientist is a jerk for his blunt honesty.

Tell us we're right and we'll sing your praises. Show us when we're not right and we'll find a high branch and a strong rope.

We ask only for the truth... but make sure it's "our truth".

Such is the tale of delusion.

If they can "stump" the scientist.. then they feel so much more "right". Besides they can always find a psuedo-scientist that needs grant money.

Never forget that 2 + 2 = 5, for extremely large values of 2.

I see so many seeking vantage points to review their life after they die, some seek deeper meaning to this life.. I settle for a deeper understanding, people that do are fascinating ( not sensational).
