I started working on a science fiction fantasy story, a very frivolous one. I'm making up most of it because at this point it doesn't need any research really other than spelling and grammar and it is formal at the moment due to the nature of the story. Someone I know uses one of the names and I said I'd write a book about him, joking but then I decided to write a fiction story. It's silly and it's fun writing it, lol. This is an excerpt that may need more editing in the future but for now this is what I'm posting. Maybe I will post more later but this website doesn't do long copy and paste too well so I refrain from it most of the time.

THE DEATHSMITH

ONE

Detonations could be heard all over the quadrant. Cyril ran down the underground tunnels hoping to reach safety. They called him a Master but he didn’t acknowledge the title. Everywhere he traveled throughout the Accord, the word master was attached to his name. Seeing him created fear on the faces of those he came into contact. Yet, his mastery spread by word of mouth throughout certain time corridors. He wasn’t immortal but many believed he couldn’t be killed. He had mastered mortality. The Silium wanted his secrets so they hunted him. They were the outer circle or husk as they were sometimes called of the Ordo Magicus.

“Master Cyril, hurry this way, by the laser bank.”

He recognized a female voice beckoning him but he couldn’t tell what direction it came from. Barely a whisper could be heard from where he stood. Laser bank, what laser bank? Did she take him for a fool? No one owned laser weapons. Their technology hadn’t reached such a level or maybe she meant something entirely different. At this point, he couldn’t be sure and didn’t care, escape the only thing on his mind.

Someone tugged on him from behind.

“Master Cyril, you’re going to get yourself killed if you keep standing in the open.”

“Who the hell are you? Let go of me before I retaliate.”

“This is no time to act like an ass sir. I know who you are and they sent me to bring you to safety. The whole quadrant is being attacked by unknowns.”

“Put up a barrier. This is a magical place and the whole planet is filled with adepts.”

“Yes, yes but no one comparable to you. You’ve earned the title of Master. There aren’t many left since the purge.”

“All right dear, I’ll follow you but ultimately you’ll have to get me to the Pinnacle. My workshop is located there. Please find my apprentice, Doric. I’ll need his help if you don’t know who is attacking us.”

“Look up, we’ve already retrieved Doric. He awaits your presence. The Omni shuttle is descending. Stand still and they’ll open the ramp when they touch ground. We need to take you to survey the surrounding area before we go to the Pinnacle. Troops have been unable to discern where the attack originates. The Clerics are unable to tune into any alternate frequencies intruding into our airspace. They’re depending on you to solve the reason we’ve been inadequate to help save the planet from attack.”

“Whether you consider me immortal or not, I personally don’t concur with the idea. I’m only a man and I have limitations.”

“Even though your arrogance is apparent your humility outweighs any notice of this aspect of your personality. We searched for you because we need your expertise. Doric was aware you traveled through the tunnels of Arcos.”

“What has he done, given away all my secrets?”

“Hardly Master, he doesn’t understand your magical abilities. My estimation is he has talents of his own but he’s in awe of yours. His desire is strong to emulate you, to learn and become a Master.”

“I don’t know what to say. He has the makings of an accomplished magician and healer but a Master is something else. He must learn to cast spells, interpret signs, walk the corridors of time and raise the dead. I’m not sure he’s ready or knowledgeable enough. I may look mid-thirties marked by time as we know it but that isn’t the case. I have learned to suspend aging but I’m not truly immortal.”

“Your concern for your novice apprentice is well placed but now we must leave and quickly. The sound of fighting is getting closer.”

“First, I’d like to know who you are.”

“My name is Faeva. I have no other names. I’m a biomorph stage ten.”

“You’re the first biomorph I’ve met. I’ve heard of the experiments but often I’m holed up in my workshop like a hermit. Time passes by and so do the astonishing changes in our society. You would be one of them. I take it you aren’t actually female. Is my estimation correct?”

“I’m whatever I choose to be moment by moment but tens were designed only for two genders, male or female. We can change from one to the other easily. Most of us choose to stay one sex and I have chosen female for my own reasons. If necessary, I will transform for the sake of self defense and disguise. Enough small talk Master Cyril, we must enter the shuttle and leave immediately.”

“I’d like you to meet our director Vander Olan.”

He extended his hand to Cyril and in return he placed his palm against his. The secret hand signs were a tradition in Arcos. He wouldn’t change because someone had attacked the planet. Otherwise he’d never have acknowledged the gesture. Those with the title Master had tomes full of secret greetings. Thus was the code of the adept.

“Come with me Master Cyril. We have clothing more to your advantage if you have to escape quickly once we take you to your haven. Running around in robes is too noticeable. We’re not in favor of you being caught by the Silium guard or whoever it is bombing our burgs at the moment. Most likely they will be aware of all your tricks. They may not know how to duplicate them but they will know how to detect them.”

Magicians were easy to recognize on Arcos. They came from a number of bloodlines but the most admired were fair with white hair, short beards and startling blue green eyes. Many colored their hair, shaved off their beards and wore lenses to disguise themselves. This class was the most sought after. They would be locked up and used for their abilities. Magic didn’t mean they could escape fortresses with thousands of guards. Granted they knew the art of invisibility but it didn’t last long and they had sensors that would reveal anyone trying to leave this way. They gave them permanent tattoos. The only escape was to open a time door and walk the corridors and hope you weren’t followed.

“We’ve picked up a communication on the outer rim of the ramparts. The Silium is behind what’s happening. We’ll release the biomorph twelves, our elite force, and they’ll put a stop to their actions, at least for now. The Accord is fed up with them. A plan is in the making. Luckily no one died today.”

“I’ve missed a lot playing wizard I see Director Olan. They’ll be a price to pay and regret for my dalliance into fringe research when the fighting ends.”

“It’s your research they're after. Aren’t you aware they want to use it to conquer this and other planets?”

“Their intelligence is off the mark. I wasn’t studying anything they would be interested in using.”

“That remains to be the unanswered question doesn’t it?”

“Maybe it is for you and your cohorts but for me it’s nonsense. Let’s get on with whatever we’re here to do.”

"You'd better take him to the lab Faeva and soon, they're getting closer."

"I will directly but I have more to say to Master Cyril."

“We know you’re able to detect anyone slipping through the corridors using low frequency evasion techniques. We have a crystal scope aligned for you to use. Please look through the scope and see if you notice anything unusual.”

Cyril breathed out slowly as if exasperated but smiled at Faeva. “Where do you have it stashed Faeva?”

“We stowed it in the back of the shuttle inside the laboratory. Right this way.”

“I’ll never understand why you call these ships shuttles. They’re big enough for interplanetary travel and have been used for that purpose.”

“Sir, I’m unaware. Your inquiry has no bearing on what knowledge I am expected to know; useless information excluded from my training.”

“Useless you say. Any inquiry coming from me had better be taken seriously.”

“Why do you think it relevant because you’re a Master Magician or is it Wizard now and part of the elite? I have no interest in titles. Doing my job is my only satisfaction. Anything else is a non sequitur.”

“At least you’re fluent in the language. I’ll follow you to the lab. Will Doric be there?”

“Of course, he’s been in the laboratory since you boarded the Omni.”

“All right young lady. You should know I detest technology and only use it because I have no other choice. I’m weak the same as every other individual on this planet. Our biggest success is uniting the whole planet over the years. We no longer have anything more than factions. Everyone is from the planet Arcos. Arcosians have moved past most of the bigotry, but the thirst for power, esteem and riches still exists.”

“Are you finished? Maybe your apprentice is willing to listen to one of your rants but I am not. If you should become irrational again, I will take remedies to stop you. Do we have an understanding?”

“You don’t have to be rude young lady. I have a right to my opinions especially since some of you have decided my position in this incursion.”

“What’s holding the two of you up? Are you being disagreeable again Master Cyril? This is a serious situation and we have been asked for help. My skills are limited but yours are not. Could you please forgo your pride and work with these people?”

“How dare you speak to me this way Doric? I won’t allow it!”

“What are you going to do Master Cyril? Throw a plasma ball at me. I know how to duck. If you lose your temper you will get everyone killed. Is that what you want?”

Cyril glared at Doric and didn’t answer right away. He was angry and wanted to choose his words carefully.

“The reason I’m upset is because I wasn’t given any choice in the matter. Whether I’m here or with the Silium makes no difference from my stand point. Both groups treat me like chattel. I will not be herded around like I’m a mindless imbecile.”

“Your point is well taken, but they have taken over the Accord and they can no longer intervene. Will you come into the lab and at least take a look. Afterward you can decide how much you want to be involved. Does that suit your fancy?”

Cyril jumped. Even though they were in the air they were only about two-hundred feet off the ground. They could be seen and they could be terminated. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be exposed to danger by hovering in one spot. What caused them to wait such a long time without seeking shelter? The circumstances and Faeva’s prodding led him to make a decision he might regret.

“I’ll help but let’s get on with this quickly. I hear the detonations getting closer to our vicinity. I’d like to get back to the Pinnacle as soon as possible.”

Cyril followed Doric into the laboratory. Paraphernalia of all types could be seen strewn around the room. He knew the random nature of the placement of tools caused some to think it lazy housekeeping but magicians had a different way of doing things. Outsiders didn’t understand the logic.

The divining crystal was huge. He hadn’t seen one approximating the size in his life. Where did they find it he wondered? There was no time for idle thoughts. He began working, trying to find where the core of the Silium was hidden. There were numerous dials and knobs to be turned. The placement had to be precise and the only one who could help was Doric. He had trained him well on the instrument and he would allow him to find the coordinates.

“Turn the locator to maximum Doric and let’s see what the projection tells us.”

“Master Cyril, they’re under the Pinnacle.”

“I’m sorry but you’re mistaken. There is nothing under the Pinnacle because I created it. My haven is not merely a place; it’s a universe, my universe. No one can go under it or over it without using magic. Even if they were a Master they would not be able to figure out my codes. They are physical, mystical and the key is in my head only. So I beg to differ on your estimation of where they are concealed.”

“You don’t say. In that case come over here and look for yourself. If the Silium is not hiding under the Pinnacle then what am I seeing?”

“I can’t tell you Doric.”

Faeva started to laugh but controlled herself immediately. She knew what he had under the Pinnacle. There could only be one thing Cyril would keep hidden or almost hidden depending on who was looking.

Doric looked back and forth between the two of them. He sat down on a stool in the laboratory and he knew.

“It’s your damn escape route isn’t it, a doorway to somewhere else? I’m not going to ask you where you arranged to go. Obviously you didn’t include me in your plans. How soon were you going to leave Arcos?”

“I have no specific strategy for leaving this planet. I’m methodical and always have my options open. If I leave you’re going with me Doric. I always planned on taking you with me, if the situation became dire.”

“You two act like it’s nothing to leave your home and family.”

“Neither of us are anxious to leave Arcos. We grew up here. The problem is if the Silium catches Cyril they will use means he cannot fight to take advantage of his skills. He must not be found by them.”

“Doric is correct but it’s a complicated issue. I’d like to go home. The dreams I have are not enough. Memories from childhood leave out details. I decided long ago I would return once I was free from the Lyra Dome of the Silium where I was trained. They treated me well but I knew war was coming. They are power hungry and want to control the whole planet and remove all the city governments. I saw it in the biostream.”

Doric stood very still shocked by Cyril’s words. He wasn’t sure what he meant.

Faeva sat down and said, “You’re not a native of Arcos?”

“I can tell I opened an illuminus door with my disclosure.”

”Your response is puzzling to me Cyril. I have been your apprentice for years and I’ve reached third callibri, yet you don’t trust me with what you’re about to reveal?”

“I didn’t think it important to our relationship. You have excelled Doric but you have many more levels to traverse before you can call yourself master. My secrets are not to demean you lad but part of what I am. We take small moves.”

“My training goes on and on and on Cyril. You’re a master and there are few on this planet even with all the wizards we have, but master is more than a wizard, a magician. You are fully awakened and your powers are almost limitless. This is why the Silium is anxious to find you and bring you back into the Ordo Magicus. They will bring together others similar to you. The Silium won’t hesitate to pit them against you until you are subjugated. We all know in Arcos it’s a matter of prestige, rank and control.”

“My patience is being drained. Let me get back to the reason you brought me to this laboratory. We can speak of options and history later when we’re in less danger.”

TWO

Cyril explained everything to Doric and Faeva concerning the whereabouts of the Silium. He told them their most likely plan of attack. Faeva saw the color fading from his face and immediately showed him to a room to rest. He was drained of his energy. There was a price to pay for practicing magic.

“Master you need to wake up. We’re almost to the Pinnacle.”

“Go away, I’m dreaming about home.”

“No, I’m not leaving, you have to get up now or we’ll have to forget about taking you to your home. The Silium is tracking us. We picked up their signal. If you want to leave, we have to take the beam down into your home. Is the procedure possible?”

“Yes of course Doric. Give me some privacy so I can clean myself and put on fresh clothing. Do you mind?”

“Fine, I’ll be waiting outside your door. Please make haste.”

Cyril stepped outside and looked around. Doric was not where he said he would be. He could hear voices down the hall and started to walk in that direction.

“What do you mean he is not from Arcos?”

Cyril stepped into the room and answered his question.

“No Doric, I’m not from Arcos as I mentioned earlier. I guess you didn't retain what I told you. I was abducted and brought to Arcos when I was around nine years-old.”

“Master, you startled me. I didn’t know you’d come into the room. What do you mean abducted? “

“I was taken from my home planet and brought to Arcos when I was a child. I was trained to be a magician or wizard if you have a preference for this nomenclature.”

“Do you know what planet you came from Master Cyril? I’m in shock because you never spoke of this to me.”

“Yes I did but there's no need to upset yourself. I’m a grown man and although I remember being taken, I’m long past being upset. I would like to return to my home.”

“What planet did they take you from? I ask you again.”

“I was taken from Tellus but it goes by a number of names. Tellus is not in the same galaxy as Arcos. I can only return on my own through the time corridors.”

“Do you mean Earth Master?”

“Yes I do. Earth is many light years distant. Where did you hear the name?”

“One of my instructors before I met you spoke of it. The location he described was in a galaxy called The Milky Way. I laughed because I thought it a silly name for a galaxy and figured he’d made up everything or read it in a fantasy book.”

“No Doric, the planet is very real. Without an Omni shuttle or some other means of transport, I can only reach the planet through the time corridors. I would prefer not to discuss my plans any further. Are we almost to the Pinnacle? I’d like to descend into my home and rest for awhile. I have very important things to do in the next time periods.”

“I know you well Master Cyril and the message coming across to me is you have a plan but you haven’t decided exactly how you will implement your ideas.”

“Correct but I’m not worried about it. I’ve been here for thirty and five cycles, one more won’t make a difference.”

“I’m not so sure your correct Master especially if the Silium catches you.”

“I have a contingency plan for that lot as well. Have no worries. When we are sent back to the Pinnacle, we will be protected. I’ve been working on fortifying the place the whole time I’ve been living there.”

“Those late nights I guess?”

“Correct as always. Now, if you’ll quit wasting my time, gather all your things and we can take our capsule into the Pinnacle and I’ll close the gates so no one can follow us.”

Faeva and Doric looked at each other and frowned. They weren’t as sure of Cyril as he was of himself.

“Hurry you two, we’re getting close and we have to take the beam down soon.”

“Faeva is going too?”

“Yes Doric, I’ve already paid for her services for a decennium.”

“You plan on taking me with you?”

“There is no other option but to take you with me. I wouldn’t think of leaving you behind. The Silium will disintegrate you upon capture. They have been destroying the early versions of biomorphs or those who are battle trained.”

“Get into the capsules everyone and be sure everything you’re bringing is tightly secured in our personal goods pods. The sounds of war are approaching.”

Faeva looked up as someone opened her capsule. “Who are you?”

“I’m sorry; I didn’t have time to identify myself. My name is Liara and the male with me is Mikla. We are part of Master Cyril’s team. He sent a short burst to let us know he was returning.”

“What do you do for Master Cyril. Why are you here when he isn’t present?”

“We’re lab assistants but we do other tasks if asked.”

Mikla starred at Faeva openly. He wasn’t sure why Cyril had brought her with him. He recognized her as a biomorph. What generation he couldn’t guess. They were biomorphs as well, stage fives. Maybe he would ask her but it might be taken as a rude question.

“Excuse my many questions. I’m Faeva and a biomorph stage ten trained as a guardian. I’m not a warrior but close to that level.”

“We welcome you to the Pinnacle and may the elements of our existence sustain you.”

“Now the introductions are over Faeva, I’d like you to secure the gates and make sure no one else can enter unless I let them.”

“I’m going to my room and rest. You all have free time to do as you wish. When morning returns, I'll hold a meeting to apprise all of you of my plans.”

“Do you think we should have told her we have been sanctified Mikla?”

“No Liara, why would she have a concern about our relationship here at the Pinnacle? Our jobs are as lab assistants. The private lives we share will remain as always, our business. Why don’t we both go to our room? I’m sure we can think of something to do.”

Liara smiled and followed Mikla to their room. She shut the door after looking both ways down the hall. No one lingered in the hallway, but they’d have to be quiet. Sound carried throughout the place. Cyril had gone to bed early and the night was long. Mikla took her in his arms.

Doric woke but rolled over and faced the wall. Half a revolution must pass before the light would return. His mind dwelled on what he had witnessed, the confusion he felt only outweighed by his fear. If the Silium caught them, what punishment would the Ordo Magicus inflict for their transgression? No one disobeyed the High Wizards and Cyril had disregarded their orders. He knew they would destroy the biomorphs because they were engineered and considered less than human. He couldn’t sleep with all the worries he had playing in his mind.

The knock on his door only annoyed him but he got up and went to see who was intruding into his leisure time.

“I’m sorry to bother you Doric but I’m frightened. I don’t understand this feeling. I’ve heard others talk of the melancholy but I’ve never experienced it. I’m assuming the tightening in the pit of my bowels is what is called fear. What should I do?”

“I can’t answer your question because I’m experiencing something similar. Everyone has bouts with this in Arcos. I would have fled to the other side of the planet but the Master is right about leaving this place. They would only follow and either subjugate us or kill all of us.”

“Yes, they will kill the three of us first. We are mere biomorphs, considered little more than rubbish under their feet. The order used to be just but with power they have become tyrannical. I’ll deal with my panic, my unease, even though they beleaguer me.”

“The most common reaction to power is to want more power and control. I’m afraid it’s nothing knew as things go. We thought the magicians to be the exception and above avarice. Why wouldn’t we be blinded to their treacheries? Trust isn’t always well placed.”

“Would you allow me to stay in this room with you tonight Doric? If the others knew my thoughts I’d be considered weak. I can’t do my job knowing their distrust. Please keep my words to yourself Doric. I’ll be fine tomorrow. I’m well trained and duty is my first cause.”

“My dear, of course you can stay here for whatever is left of the night. Don’t be so formal. I find no shame in your confessions. The whole idea of confidence is to say nothing. I suspect we are all having misgivings considering what we’ve experienced. I’ll set up the cot and you can sleep until I wake you.”

“Thank you Doric.”

Faeva fell asleep as soon as he set up the cot for her. It was obvious she was exhausted. Doric admired her bravery. He took a good look at her for the first time. She was beautiful now she had let down her hair and put on casual clothing. He knew he shouldn’t have such thoughts but he couldn’t help himself. Were biomorphs telepathic, he wondered? The gossip in the burgs hinted of this ability but he had no first hand knowledge. Maybe that would change now that he was living with three.

“I hope all of you slept well now that you’ve finally shown up to have first meal. Beula has outdone herself. I hope you enjoy everything I chose for us. When everyone is finished we must make plans. We have very little time to leave this planet. Things are coming to the fulfillment of what the Sages told us. All I can recommend is to be prepared for an adjustment when we cruise the corridors of time. I know they say walk but there is no real walking involved. It’s a figure of speech. We’ll take a pod to the right doorway and enter the time stream. The meeting will begin shortly.”

When they entered Cyril’s work room he was seated looking over a large book of magical spells, after all he was a Master Wizard.

“We’ve arrived Master Cyril.”

“I saw you enter through the door. Be seated at the table and I’ll be with you shortly. I’m sorry for the wait but as I said we must make our final plans and leave Arcos immediately. There is fighting at the Citadel and from there it’s only one nightfall before they reach my home. I want to be gone before they get here without any casualties. The servants will be leaving tomorrow and as night commences, we will be traveling away from the Pinnacle too. I knew one day I would be going home but I didn’t think it would be so soon and under these circumstances. I will not let them catch me.”

“Why do they refer to you as the Deathsmith?”

“I’m not sure but I believe it’s because most of my duties have been with healing and bringing people back from the brink of death. My skills are excellent in this area. Does that answer your question sufficiently Faeva?”

Faeva nodded and listened to Cyril explain his plans for quite some time. They were very organized and explicit. He left no room for error or harm to any of them. They were to get their gear and meet him at the gateway after the sun set. He had a plan to blend into society on his home world and that would be playing out immediately. No trail would be left for the Silium to follow.

“Why don’t you place a curse on the Pinnacle?”

“Mikla, I assumed you knew curses were superstition. No real magician would attempt something of this nature, let alone tell anyone. They would be a laughing stock, ridiculed for ages. Curses don’t work. They're for old women who know no better. When a Master magician works spells they are specific. They never try to blacken a family name because it’s believed for one, as I said, not viable. We have found this to be true, the few of us silly enough to try one. There is a belief it would backfire and actually follow the family line of the one who created the curse. Granted, as I stated, in the past some tried but they always failed. I’m a High Master and we don’t deal with such low lander magic, which is nothing more than foolishness. What I'm able to do I have done and it will activate after we have gone.”

“I’m sorry for my lack of knowledge on this subject Master Cyril. I asked because I was curious. I’d heard it mentioned once in awhile at various sites where I worked with the populace.”

“How will you know if you don’t ask? I was surprised you hadn’t been told. No harm done but I hope you understand a curse is like standing in the middle of a room and yelling obscenities to someone not there. There is no end result.”

“Now back to important information. We’re going to Tellus which is now called Earth in the timeframe we’ll be living. The Ordo Magicus is knowledgeable about this planet and many others. I chose not to go to the period I was born but further into the future to what they call the 21st Century. The language is very similar to what we speak on Arcos. They measure distance where we are going the same way but not all over the planet. I don’t know if it was populated by our species or if it’s a coincidence. I’ve found there are a number of similarities depending on the region.”

“I’m overwhelmed by what you’re revealing. I hope we can fit into their society.”

“You’ll have no problem Faeva. You’ve all been engineered to adapt to your surroundings. Doric and I will have the most difficulty adjusting. I contacted a scientist in a place called America and he will be helping us. He was overwhelmed by my message but said he had always believed others similar to his species lived on planets they hadn’t discovered yet. His theories have been rejected by learned groups. He told me they call him a crackpot, whatever that means. The word came across as being unfavorable.”

“Do you honestly believe we can trust this individual?”

“My hopes are up Doric. I hope yours as well. We have no other choice. Anymore delay can mean imprisonment or worse. He understands our predicament and has agreed to find a place for us to live when we arrive. Any other questions before we finish last minute duties? No? Since there’s no response, I guess not. You’re all dismissed.”

The pounding on the gates was deafening. Cyril stood up and realized he’d forgotten something, someone. Doric came running toward Cyril and stopped. He had the look of fright on his face.

“Calm yourself Doric. Something slipped my mind and I apologize. One other person is leaving with us and she made it just in time. Open the south side gate where I told her to go. Give three raps, then two and then five. If it’s her she will return your signal. She’s prepared with the code. When she returns the raps as given let her in and secure the gate.”

Doric stepped back for a moment in shock by what he saw. A young woman rushed past him calling for Cyril.

“Greetings Aleria, I’m sorry I forgot you were meeting us here. I’m happy you could find the Pinnacle with my directions.”

“Your directions were less than clear but I managed to figure them out.”

Everyone was now in the main hall. They stood at various locations in the room sizing this new person Cyril had invited to join them. Who was she? Where had he met her were questions running through the minds of all in the room except the two of them?

“Master Cyril, would you please introduce this woman to us.”

“Give me a moment Faeva.”

“Did you bring everything I requested Aleria?”

“Yes Master Cyril. I have everything you requested in this satchel I’m carrying and my personal items in the pack. When do we leave?”

“We leave as soon as night falls.”

“Everyone gather round, I’d like you to meet Aleria. She is a Lorelei I met while training in the Dome. She is an accomplished adept.”

“Could you be more specific? What is a Lorelei?”

“Certain females are trained in the art of subtle magic. They use tones to heal and songs to cast spells. They are very seductive and their magic overwhelms before the object of their attention even realizes anything is happening. Often their low level humming isn’t heard by the human ear. We need her to block the vibrations we’ll be creating when we leave. She will cover them with various sounds to lead the Silium astray. They have been after her for awhile because she is the best of her kind and most beautiful. The harmonies she creates will confuse the Silium and hopefully they won’t find the Pinnacle in their pursuit whatsoever. She is covering the tracks of our departure.”

Doric didn’t know what to think but Master Cyril definitely prepared for all contingencies even if he didn’t share his plan with anyone. Maybe he didn’t trust him. He was beginning to think it the case.

“Does everyone understand? Doric how about you, does her presence make sense?”

Yes, but do you have any other surprises for us?

“Now that you ask, Aleria’s brother and sister are coming along with us as well. The Silium is also after Loren and when they find out that Merit has the same abilities as her sister, she will be next.”

“I’m glad I asked or we would have been scared by more knocking.”

“No, my brother and sister will not be knocking on the gate. They entered with me. You can reveal yourselves.”

A young man and a teenage girl suddenly appeared beside Aleria. The biomorphs and Doric shook their heads in disbelief.

“Is this finally everyone? We’ll have to take two pods on our journey. You realize this don’t you Master?”

“Yes Faeva and as I told Doric, calm yourself. We need them, all of them. You will see when we get to Earth. Now let me explain what my plan is when we first arrive. We’ll be provided three living spaces in exchange for knowledge and we can choose what we wish to divulge. Aleria and her brother and sister will live in one dwelling as a family unit, Mikla and Liara in another, Doric, Faeva and I in the larger dwelling since I need space for a laboratory.”

“How will we work together with this arrangement?”

“Mikla I'm aware you and Liara are sanctified. You need your own home together and Aleria and her siblings another. The rest of us will do quite nicely in the larger home because of my work. Doric will remain my apprentice and Mikla and Liara my lab assistants. Aleria will be the housekeeper and take care of all the duties around my home. This position is perfect for her. You will all come and go just as any team working together with duties in the home. I can’t have any outsiders coming into our dwellings. Loren and Merit will attend private school. All rudimentary details have been arranged by Mr. Moreland. He’s waiting for us to arrive. When we exit the corridor please keep your composure. I don’t want this scientist frightened. They have another name for the passageway we will be going through. He didn’t understand what I was talking about at first but realized it was what they call a wormhole. I haven’t told him we have a myriad of these wormholes that connect to planets all over the universe. It’s best he knows little about that side of our technology. Keep that in mind if you should be questioned.”

“What a strange name to use for something so commonplace.”

“I thought so too Faeva but I believe we should wait until we get to Earth to have all our questions answered. Is everyone ready to leave?”

“No, I’m not. I have to do adjustments in your laboratory to prepare our way so we won’t be detected. I’ll be able to complete the necessary tasks quickly. Could you show me the way?”

“All right Aleria, Doric will show you to my lab. We’ll take everything you’ve brought and the rest of the miscellaneous items left to load to the staging area. Doric will wait for you here and then take you to where we’re waiting. Please hurry.”

Aleria nodded and left following Doric close behind.

THREE

The pods flew through the corridors. Cyril had thought it would be a silent ride but it wasn’t. Not only was it rough there was a hum that followed them. His surprise showed on his face because it was well known there was no sound in space but in the corridors it wasn’t the case. Aleria was singing at a low level to dampen the vibrations. They didn’t want to be followed and she would disguise their trail. Any probes would be sent off course. Some sort of molecules existed in the corridor. He wasn’t sure what it was but it must have to do with anti matter because there was definitely vibration if they heard sound outside of Aleria. Had something been planted their eyes could not detect? That was a conundrum but since they were almost at their destination he would forget about trying to figure it out. He had left the influence of the Silium and had no intention of returning.

Everyone heard a loud thud and realized they had landed on ground. There was no re-entry into the atmosphere, nothing. They burst out of an opening onto a firm surface. Dazed and confused they open the pods and started to get out until Master Cyril shouted to stop. Standing a few yards away were men holding some sort of weapons.

“Who’s Mr. Moreland?”

“I’m afraid I’m Mr. Moreland and I apologize for the men with firearms. I needed help and I picked people I knew I could trust. They will never reveal your presence but they were scared of the unknown and wouldn’t come without their handguns.”

“Tell them to put them away. We are far more advanced than you are and you can’t hurt us with them even if you tried. Otherwise I am going to ask the young lady behind me to use the device she is holding and it will incapacitate all of you. You won’t be harmed but you won’t be able to move until we release you. Do I have to resort to such uncouth actions? I thought we were to be your guests. You have nothing to fear from us. We have only one person that is close to enforcement with us and she is holding the device. She is a guardian rather than an enforcer. She does not kill and neither do any of the rest of us. We left because we were in danger of either being killed or imprisoned for the things we know and can implement. On this planet, I guess you’d call us scientists of a sort.”

The men looked at each other, shrugged and slowly put their guns away.

“Good, now that we understand each other, did you bring the trucks to move our pods to storage somewhere?”

“Yes, we did but we didn’t realize they would be this big. I’ll have to rent a hanger for them. In the meantime, we can store them in the cave next to where you landed. Can they be moved on land without being pulled?”

“Yes, actually they were built for all terrain. We’ll lower the treads and drive the pods into the cave.”

“We have large tarps but we weren’t prepared for their size. I’m not sure how to keep them from being found.”

“Let us take care of that detail Mr. Moreland. Stay put and we’ll return in a moment.“

They watched as Cyril drove one pod into the cave and someone else the other. Two of their party rubbed their eyes as they watched them walk back out with some form of flatbed carrier with contained what they assumed was their personal items and a lot of technical gear. The man that followed had another filled like the first one. They stood in disbelief as Cyril waved something and the terrain changed.

“What happened to the cave?”

“Nothing Mr. Moreland, it’s an illusion. No one will bother our pods because they’re shielded and cannot be found. Shall we get our things loaded into your conveyance? I think we could all use some rest and refreshments.”

Doric laughed at the expression on their faces but tried to conceal his contempt for their lack of sophistication. Everyone followed Cyril as they walked up a path toward what appeared to be a paved road. They had them as well but they were slightly different. There was a large conveyance they called a truck and four others called cars. Cyril split the group up into different cars since they were all going to the same places and their gear was loaded into the truck.

“Don’t these, what do you call them, cars go any faster?”

“Mr. Cyril did not introduce us to any of you, but miss, we have limits to how fast we can go on any of our highways. Speed limits we call them and if we exceed that speed, someone will appear and pull us over and give us a citation that includes a fine for disobeying a road law.”

“My name is Faeva and I understand I think what you’re saying. We had something similar but our vehicles skimmed the byways rather than touched down on them. We lowered our transports at the destination.”

“We’ve arrived at one of your destinations. This house is where Cyril and whoever he has chosen will live. Would you like to go in and look at this house first before we take the rest of you to other houses?”

“This will do for now. I think everyone is too tired at the moment to go anywhere else.”

“Fine, rather than try to explain everything to you, which will take a lot of time, we’ll park the truck inside that building with the door alongside the house. Follow Mr. Waverly inside and he’ll explain anything you’d like to know.”

Everyone looked around including Cyril. He remembered some of what he was seeing vaguely from when he was a child. The others felt totally unfamiliar with anything they were seeing but they all began to smile, happy with what they saw.

“What is that black thing on the wall? My name is Mikla by the way.”

Mr. Waverly smiled and said, “We call it a television or TV. See what I’m holding in my hand? This item is a remote control. You can turn on the TV and change channels with it. Channels have shows on them with people playing parts to tell a story for entertainment and different topics are addresses on various channels such as travel, news, cooking and religion.”

“What’s religion?”

“We have a number of religions around the world. It’s the belief in a higher power that created us and the planet we live on and the whole universe. Each one has their own individual ideas as to how that happened.”

“My name is Aleria and on Arcos, we don’t have religions. We believe everything is defined by science and magic. We are a logical and pragmatic people. Everyone is referred to as an Arcosian but there are factions. They all go by this one identity. Do you call yourselves Earthers or something similar?”

“No, I’m afraid not. We live in countries and we call ourselves by a connection to these countries. We acknowledge we live on the planet Earth but we don’t refer to ourselves by the name of our planet. Those that live here are called Americans. You’ll learn what other names are used. We have races and we have ethnic groups. This is cultural diversity within a race. We brought educational discs over here for you to watch. Rather than try to answer random questions, I suggest you watch the discs on the television for awhile. I’ll set it up for you. Your language and expression is similar to ours so you’ll have very little difficulty blending in once we get you some new clothing.”

“What’s wrong with our clothing?”

“Nothing if you were on your home world. The style of dress you’re wearing is not related to styles we are presently wearing. In fact, they would be considered either costumes or old-fashioned in the US.”

“I’m lost,” said Faeva. “What is old-fashioned, what is a costume and what is the US?”

“This is the very reason I suggested watching the discs. Costumes are something we put on for parties that are make belief. They are either from another time or made up characters and old-fashioned means out of time; from the past. Our country is called the United States of America. America is a shorter name for the same thing. I’ll start the first one and any time you want to stop, push this button on the remote control and it will stop them. You are free to watch as long as you like.”

“We understand most of what you’re telling us sir. Your accent is what I’m having most of the trouble with and individual words. I’m sure when we watch your discs and some of your travel shows on the television we’ll start to pick up your dialect. I’m sorry if we seem backward. I can assure you we’re not.”

“I’m well aware your culture is very advanced. My first name is Craig. You may call me by that name and yours?”

“I’m a biomorph so I have no other name but Faeva. Only some of us may have more than one name or a number attached with the name. You’ve been speaking with Aleria. I just met her so I know nothing more than the one name. We should concentrate on your discs for now. If you have questions, write them down so we can go over them at one time.”

Craig pushed the on button and started the first disc. He had loaded discs from National Geographic, The Smithsonian, The History Channel and others similar. There was even one from the BBC on the British Isles. They would be busy watching for hours if they held out that long.

“I will be returning to my own home. Welcome to Earth. Mr. Moreland just entered the house and he will see to your needs. Good night to you all.” Craig turned and left the room.

“He’s uncomfortable around us isn’t he? It’s almost as if he expects us to change into monsters just to prove the inhabitants on this planet are the only civilized beings in the universe. How sad I am for him because he’s wrong.”

“We recognize this Liara but what do you expect? They’re not as far advanced in technology as we are and this must all come as a shock to him. Cyril told me they honestly believed even though they were doing scientific space research they were the only beings in existence. We need to keep watching these discs as he called them and get as acquainted with the ways of this planet and put our past behind us.”

“I do understand Doric, but I can’t help if I miss where I grew up even if the environment has become toxic with those who are power hungry.”

“The test of whether we stay or go to another planet will be when we venture out into society in this place they call America. Now shush so I can listen to these discs they have so kindly provided to us.”

The evening passed with many oohs and aahs but eventually all were exhausted asking where they could sleep. Cyril told them to follow Mr. Moreland and he’d show them where they could sleep and give them more comfortable clothing for rest. He was anxious to see his lab and would sleep later.

“This room has two beds. Faeva and Aleria can sleep here, good night to you. Follow me down the hall. This room is being provided for Mikla and Liara, good night to you. Come, Doric and Loren will share this room and Merit has her own room next door. This house has six bedrooms and one for a servant such as a live-in cook, teacher or butler if Cyril chooses to have one. The other homes we chose have three bedrooms and three baths. I hope you like all we have secured. You can go next door and go right inside Merit. You’ll find clothing on the bed. My wife will be here in the morning to cook breakfast for everyone.”

“May I ask a question sir?”

“Of course you can Merit, what’s the question?”

“What is a breakfast?”

“Breakfast is the meal we serve in the mornings after waking. I hope that answers your question.”

“Oh, you mean first meal. We have that too but call it by a different name. Later we have midday meal and then nightfall meal. Sometimes small meals in-between if we’re hungry.”

“All of the names for mealtime depend on where you live. Basically in this country it’s most often breakfast, brunch if you get up closer to midday and mix types of foods we eat between breakfast and lunch which some call dinner. Here we say breakfast, lunch and dinner but some call the final meal supper. Anything else is snack time and not really a meal. I know it’s confusing and I’m sorry. We didn’t realize how little things would affect you let alone the serious stuff. I’ll see you in the morning. My wife and I will be staying in the spare room tonight. If you get scared or need anything, don’t hesitate to knock on our door. Good night Merit.”

“Good night Mr. Moreland.”

Robert Moreland was an astrophysicist who had been shunned by his own scientific community for his theories. His wife was a chemist and they had met on the job. Nancy Moreland was known throughout academia as the woman married to the lunatic. Regardless she was a lauded scientist with many accomplishments credited to her. He still made a good living and was given grants as long as they were not in an area they thought was tantamount to foolishness. The money wasn’t the most important to him because he and his wife came from wealthy families and had inherited millions. Both of them knew this was the only reason he was tolerated by his peers. His wife had gone to bed and he was going downstairs to talk to Cyril in the laboratory he had set up for him.

“Do you like your new lab, what is it, Master Cyril?”

“Yes, indeed it’s more than I had expected.”

“Why are you called Master and do you have a last name?”

“Master is the name given to those who are at the highest rank of adept on Arcos. I’m actually a High Master Wizard. The use of magician is the casual form of address. For us, magic is a division of science. You see without any underlying basis magic wouldn’t work. You have to be knowledgeable of these facts and understand them as well. Cyril is the name they gave me on Arcos but my first name is actually Joseph and my last O’Reilly. For the purposes of identification on Earth, I will be Cyril Joseph O’Reilly.”

“What about your friends?”

“I need to explain about Faeva, Mikla and Liara. They are what you call human but they have been upgraded. Do you know the words genetically enhanced?”

“Yes, I understand your meaning, continue.”

“Arcos has enhanced many on the planet. We call them biomorphs and they are given a first name and a staging number. Mikla and Liara are stage fives. They are suited to laboratory, secretarial and household jobs whereas Faeva is a guardian. She’s not a warrior but one that protects those she is assigned. She was assigned to me. They are considered disposable in our culture and if she or the others had been caught, they would have been incinerated.”

“I have numerous questions I will save for tomorrow but if you could explain the nature of the other three I would feel less stressed in this situation.”

“All right, I can’t foresee what Loren would have become. You would have to ask him if he had special studies. Aleria is what we call a Lorelei. She is human born naturally and has the ability to use sound to make changes in the environment. They come from one bloodline. She can heal and she can harm. Her younger sister will probably be the same when she matures. Only women are of this type. They have a natural talent that’s handed down through genetics. We were members of the Ordo Magicus and directly under the tutelage and control of the Silium which is the outer circle of the Ordo Magicus. The guard of this last group is who chased after us.”

“Thank you at least I have a clearer picture. I’m going to bed and I’ll see you in the morning. I’ll teach you time on Earth and how to read a clock. No questions, the explanations are for tomorrow. Good night Cyril.”

Robert turned and went out the door leaving Cyril with numerous questions to be answered. There was a cot set up in the laboratory for him with clothing lying on top. Cyril grinned to himself realizing Robert had already sized him up and correctly. Morning wouldn’t be soon enough for him but it would have to suffice.

FOUR

Room after room everyone from Arcos covered their eyes. They weren’t use to the bright light of day. They realized their sun must be farther from the planet than the one called Sol on Earth or merely sun which they found odd. The sun, a star, they believed to be the harbinger of life. No one worshiped the sun, but they did have commemorations of life in honor of the sun which they didn’t give a personification. Arcosians believed it to be the highest form of nature, the sustainer of everything that lived on their planet but it had no personality, it had no sentience, it had a job and it did the job well. Without the sun there would be nothing living.

Doric and Loren wandered out of their room looking to see if anyone else was up. Sure enough Merit was sitting at a table in the adjoining room off of what they called a living room. Everyone else was sleeping except the Morelands. They must have been at odds with their arrival Doric assumed. They sat down at the table with Merit to see what would happen next.

“Good morning, you’re up early. My name is Nancy Moreland and I’m Robert’s wife. This means a committed coupling in the eyes of our government and sometimes our religious faith. I understand religion has been already explained so I’ll move on. I will be bringing out some covered dishes of a variety of foods we have for breakfast in this country. You may choose which one’s you would like to try. They’re all good but you’ll probably have preferences.”

“You eat the flesh of animals on your planet?”

“Yes we do. We believe every living thing serves a purpose in sustaining life. We were the caretakers of our planet and the animals, not all types but many nurtured our lives. We ate the animals of the land and the air and in our waters. I’m sure we’ll like whatever you serve us.”

“Thank you Doric for your thorough answer. I’ll bring out a few of the dishes I’ve prepared that are common in this country. First I’ll explain what we’ve placed on the table. I want to mention there are some people who eat mostly vegetables in various ways to preserve the lives of animals on this planet, even some that consider certain animals divine. We’re not among them.”

Nancy went through each item by name and explained their purpose. They shook their heads seemingly understanding. She demonstrated how each eating utensil was used. She was told they used something similar on Arcos.

“The smell is wonderful. I’m looking forward to trying everything.” Merit looked up at Nancy with a big smile.

“You’re more than welcome to try anything that looks appealing to you. I’ve labeled the dishes with the name of what is contained inside.“

Mr. Moreland came out of the kitchen carrying some very large vials with liquids in them. He sat them down on the table.

“We call these containers pitchers and I have milk in one. It comes from cows. Hopefully you learned something about this animal from the discs yesterday. In another, I have cold water and the other one is orange juice.”

“If I may speak?” said Aleria. She had just entered the room and heard what Robert had told them. “I did a lot of food preparation on Arcos and some of what you carried in with you I recognize. We have cows on our planet and we use the same name. I know what you called water, but what is juice?”

“Do you see the bowl of objects in the center of that table? The bowl contains what we call fruit. They grow on vines, on trees and bushes. The round fruit that is the color of the setting sun is called an orange and we extract liquid from it and it’s a common beverage we have with breakfast. Some like milk and others prefer water. We don’t take it from our oceans or seas because ours contain high amounts of salt. The water we drink comes from rivers, lakes and other places. It has been processed to make it safe for drinking“

“I believe I understand most of what you’re relating to us. Some of the names are different but I’m surprised how many are the same. We drink the liquids squeezed from fruits and we drink water as well. Milk isn’t as popular but children often drink it. We have some hot drinks early morning and sometimes at other times of the day. We make them from grains or types of beans.”

“Very good, I’m hoping you’ll be familiar with many of the foods and liquids we eat and drink. Nancy is putting everything on the counter now. If you’d like to bring your plates, you can serve yourselves and pick out what you think you might like to eat. If you have any questions either of us will be happy to elaborate. I suspect we’ll be giving explanations for many months.”

Faeva, Cyril, Mikla and Liara walked into the room and heard most of what Robert had explained. They picked up their plates and followed.

“If I might add, we have placed photos of everything we’re serving, the ingredients or how it is made above each dish. If it comes from an animal information on the animal is there, what the food is and how it is used and what it looks like before it’s cooked. Over the days you’ll get familiar with everything I’m sure. At the side of the hot dishes, are containers with what we call cereal. They’re derived from various grains. We sat out bowls for the cereal if you’re interested in trying them. We didn’t make any hot cereal today. Maybe we will tomorrow. We generally put milk or a substitute on the grains and then eat it. All of these are slightly sweetened. I’m going to fill my plate now and I hope you all enjoy your meal.”

They looked over the food quickly and filled their plates. No one acted put off by anything Nancy had fixed. Merit was excited they could tell by the array of dishes Nancy had prepared. They all looked as if they hadn’t eaten for days or minimally. She suspected since they had been pursued they had slept but nourishment, she wasn’t sure.

“I love the scrambled eggs and bacon. Could I have more?”

“Yes Merit, eat until you are full. There’s more than enough food to go around for one refill or more.”

“After breakfast we plan on taking you into town. You’re in the state of California. Everyone is casual in this state. The weather is warm all year round most of the time. Aleria expressed the desire to go to a shopping mall. They were shown in what you watched yesterday. Everyone will be given something to wear. I must ask you not to pick up or touch anything. We don’t want mall security to think you are trying to take anything without paying. If you have any questions or concerns ask us. Music will be playing and there will be many people talking. You should have an idea from what you saw on the television what to expect. Please keep your composure so as not to draw attention to the group. I see that most of the ladies have long hair, please wear it down or I will show you how to pull it back and the art of using a scrunchy.”

Liara giggled but asked no questions. This was the first time Nancy had seen any of them look happy. They were smiling and talking among themselves. Robert would take care of the men and she had the duty of helping the females. She was resigned they had a lot of work ahead of them but it was well worth the knowledge they would attain from these visitors to Earth. Although she realized she needed to revise her thoughts because they planned to stay and were not visiting. Her husband told her that Cyril was actually born on Earth and been taken by the Silium when he was younger. They had to be very discrete because if found out their government would detain all of them for an indefinite period of time. Robert hadn’t wanted to tell them this detail yet.

Everyone piled into a large van after breakfast. Nancy and Robert were satisfied they looked like the average Californian. They planned on telling others they were having a small family reunion if asked. They did resemble each other especially the biomorphs. Nancy realized they were all human. She had decided to treat them the same as she would someone visiting from a foreign country. If she thought too hard about their origin she’d get frightened even though she knew it wasn’t rational.

“Follow me ladies. I want to buy all of you bathing suits. We wear them when we swim in water at a pool, lake, ocean and other bodies of water. We’re going to have a barbecue this afternoon. I know you don’t know what I mean. Save any questions until we’re back at Cyril’s house. Early evening we will be taking some of you to your own assigned homes which are in the same neighborhood.”

“We aren’t use to wearing what you call bathing suits. On Arcos it would have been thought of as indecent.”

“Customs vary by country on this planet Liara, but in the US we wear bathing suits. I’ll pick up some one-piece suits. You’ll be more comfortable wearing those if that is the case.”

“You misunderstand Nancy. We wear nothing when we bath to clean ourselves as well as for pleasure. It is considered indecent to cover what nature has provided us. All of us realize Americans don’t feel this way. One of the educational discs showed people on the beach and all were wearing what you call bathing suits. We understand and will comply and do as the natives do.”

Nancy laughed and said, “I’m glad you feel this way Liara and I hope the rest of you do too. We want you to be happy here.”

“We are already and especially me. I’ve never felt I belonged to a family as I do now. Biomorphs never know the names of their parents. We lived on our own taken care of by the Silium.”

Nancy smiled at Faeva not knowing what to say, and Faeva smiled back. It was the first time she had seen her smile. She couldn’t help but be gratified she could bring a smile to the young woman’s face. They spent approximately two hours in the mall before they got back into the van. Everyone was chattering about everything they had seen.

When they arrived back at Cyril’s house the girls went to their rooms to change. They giggled but figured out how to put on their bathing suits. Nancy went room to room and collected each one.

“Follow me girls. We’re going out to the backyard to swim and have what you call midday meal. Try to go with the flow of activities if you can. You need to learn to adapt to your surroundings as quickly as possible. Then we can go back to our daily lives and move on.”

“We’re going to get into that repository? I thought it was a place you stored your drinking water.”

“No Liara, we get into it. We call it a swimming pool. Our drinking water comes through pipes from elsewhere. Some of us buy bottled water which is either delivered or purchased in stores. I know you have numerous questions but you’ll assimilate with time. The best thing you can do is keep watching the discs and reading books.”

“Mikla turned around and looked at the others smiling. It’s not cold like I expected, but pleasantly warm. Come on, get in. You’ll love it in this what did you call it, oh yeah, swimming pool. It’s very cool.”

“Cool,” said Doric mimicking him. “Where did you learn that word and what does it mean?”

“Where do you think? I watched the television yesterday and they said the word often. I think it means something wonderful, acceptable but more than that. When an individual really likes something, they say it is cool. Not that the weather is colder though. The word is used in that way also. Confusing language isn’t it and most of it is our language too.”

“All right, have it your way, warm but cool.” Doric laughed and everyone joined. They were beginning to accept what they thought were oddities in the way Americans used words.

They spent the next few hours in the pool laughing and enjoying themselves. Cyril, of course, stayed in the laboratory studying science and esoteric books he found in the library provided for him. Robert had shown him a laptop and explained how to use the device. The internet was new to him but he caught on quickly. He found a plethora of information from the use of his computer and took advantage of the access to everything he wanted to know about Earth and those living on it. The surprise he had about certain topics was met with wonder concerning others.

“Time to get out of the pool and eat folks. There are towels on the lounge chairs. Help yourself to one. The food is on the table and everything you’ll need. We’re having an all American dinner; hot dogs and hamburgers with all the fixings that go with it. You’ll like everything I’m sure.”

“Thanks Mrs. M. We appreciate all you’re doing for us,” said Loren.

“Take your cues from us and watch how we prepare everything.”

Robert put a hamburger on a bun and started to put on lettuce, tomato, ketchup and pickles. Everyone followed and a few were brave enough to add extra toppings. The rest of the week went the same way with everyone watching Robert or his wife fix their food. They copied everything they saw and most of them loved what Nancy prepared. Cyril on the other hand was hard pressed to leave the laboratory but after awhile, Nancy insisted. She wasn’t going to allow him to start a bad habit of skipping his meals even under the circumstances. He could take breaks to eat even if he appeared to be anti social. The girls were relentless watching the documentaries provided for them while the males opted to read or watch television intermittently. The days were dull and rote but this group of aliens still found joy in their commitment to fit into their way of life.

About a month after they had arrived they were accustomed to their own homes and took to daily routines. Every morning they would come to Cyril’s house while a tutor taught Merit and Loren at their home for about eight hours with breaks. Sometimes they walked over to Cyril’s and other times they stayed home and watched television. They had discovered cartoons and superheroes, not to mention video games. Turned out they behaved like any other teenager.

The moon was hidden behind clouds and it was dark out. The street they lived on had amber street lights which didn’t illuminate much. Doric woke up to noises coming from the kitchen. He took a flashlight out of the drawer by his bed and quietly went downstairs. Lights flashed outside the house. Someone was trying to break in. He took his cell phone out and called Aleria. She said she’d rush over and told him to keep himself in control. They weren’t on Arcos and humans acted differently. He started to object but stayed quiet. If anyone could fix whatever or whoever was sneaking around their home, she could. Faeva had come downstairs wondering what was going on. Relaying Aleria’s message, they stayed at the bottom of the stairs and waited for her to arrive.

The front door suddenly burst open and a lot of men rushed into the house holding weapons.

“Don’t move if you know what’s good for you,” said one man in a uniform. Another was talking on a cell phone to someone saying they had secured two of them. Faeva and Doric looked at each other terrified. They didn’t understand what was happening.

“We know you’re aliens and have come to Earth secretly. We’ve been monitoring you since you arrived. No harm will come to you and we know you haven’t harmed anyone while you’ve been here. You appear to be refugees from a planet you chose to leave for unknown reasons. There’s a lot of information we’d like from you and if you’re reasonable you will work with us. We’re with the CIA which will mean nothing to you but we help the government whenever asked when it relates to missions we want to remain secret.”

“Your type is very recognizable and work with you, why should we? You burst into our home and scared us and now you make threats. What made you think we would understand what your saying or recognize your authority?”

“I, I guess we didn’t think but obviously you at least understand what I’m saying to you. No matter where you are from, if you don’t have permission from the government, you’re considered an illegal and can be arrested.”

Aleria walked up behind the four men and started to sing. She took out her stunner and all of them dropped to the floor out cold.

“What are we going to do with them?”

“I’ll wipe their memories clean with this little device I took with me and we’ll leave them in their car on the other side of town. When they wake up they won’t remember where they are or why. Nothing to it and I know how to drive. I’ll drive them to a remote spot and come back. All you have to do is follow me in Cyril’s car. Are you capable Doric?”

“Do mean to drive? Of course I’m very capable. They’re cars are easy to maneuver and I memorized all their road rules. Let’s get these men out of here in case Cyril wakes up. He’ll panic and do something outrageous. Let’s go.”

They opened their car door and one by one placed them back in their vehicle. One would be moved to the front once they found a good place to leave them.

Doric dropped Aleria home and headed back to Cyril’s.

“I’m glad that’s over with. They won’t remember a thing and we placed their car facing as if they were leaving town or passing through. Hopefully whoever they report to won’t send them back.”

“Me too Doric, but we need to tell Cyril so he can place a spell on them so anyone they come in contact with will forget about us too.”

“Tell me what Faeva?”

“Oh Master Cyril I didn’t hear you come into the room.”

“I know you didn’t Faeva. What’s going on around here? Something happened but you left me out of the, what do they call it, loop.”

“Yes, we were afraid you would over react if we told you. I’m sorry Cyril.”

“You should be Doric. “

Faeva told him what had happened over the last two hours and who the men said they were. She also mentioned they wanted him to put a spell on the men so anyone who came in contact with them would forget why they were in their city or that they even existed.

“You should have gotten me up because I need to do this in close proximity. You’ll have to drive me to their car if we are to make sure no one remembers us.”

“Shit,” said Doric.

“Where did you learn that word?”

Doric grinned slowly knowing he had said something Cyril didn’t want him to use. “I heard it on television.”

“There’s no excuse for you picking up their inflammatory words. You know we never speak in this way. I’m not asking but telling you never to utter it again.”

“I’m sorry it came out of my mouth without thinking. You can count on me to forget the word.”

“Time is passing and the longer we stay here talking the sooner they will revive. Take me to where you left them. First I must get my crystal. I’ll meet you out front. Get the car started.”

FIVE

No one would ever know about the night before because they had all agreed never to speak of the men who tried to arrest them. They weren’t dumb, they already knew it was a misdemeanor and they hadn’t broken any other laws. There was a leak and they had to talk to Robert because one of his associates had told someone about them.

“Cyril, I’m here.”

“Good Robert, we all want to talk to you about something serious.”

“I see all of you have gathered here today. Whatever is bothering you I’m sure we can solve together.”

“Let’s hope so because I’m firmly against leaving again to find another planet and one that may even be more difficult for us to disappear into the society.”

“There’s no reason you should have to leave. Tell me what happened to upset you Cyril.”

“I’ll tell you since Cyril got involved somewhat after the fact. He fixed our mistakes.”

Doric told Robert all they had experienced and when he was done, Mr. Moreland looked scared. The color had drained from his face and he was perspiring.

“What can I say, because I have no idea who might have told the authorities about your presence, none at all.”

Nancy walked in. She had been outside the door and had heard everything. “Why don’t we host a dinner party in celebration of your successful integration into society on Earth. I’ll invite everyone involved and maybe you can detect with whatever powers you have who it might be. Aren’t some of you at least slightly telepathic?”

“Yes, Nancy. All of the biomorphs are telepathic to a degree and especially Faeva. Aleria might be able to pick up something from brain waves. She won’t detect words but different emotions have various frequencies. This is an excellent idea. Don’t make it tonight since it’s Monday. How about Friday which should be convenient for all to attend. Don’t take no for an answer. Tell them we have an announcement to make or any other excuse to peak their interest. I’ll come up with something.”

“Sounds like a good plan Cyril but I have to tell you I’m not happy about the involvement of the CIA and when I find out who it is, I’ll no longer associate with them. I hope you’ll be able to do something about whoever is leaking information. It must be non invasive and won’t hurt them overall. All of my friends have families. I could never condone violence.”

“Don’t worry Robert, violence isn’t our way unless forced. We can erase the memory of their involvement. Everything they know about us will be gone. They will remember you and their connection to you as a friend but nothing else where we’re concerned.”

“All right, I can agree with what you’re suggesting. I’m really hurt that any of my friends and all of these men are close friends would betray me to the authorities.”

“I understand your reaction Robert but remember, you don’t know what they offered them or if they were coerced in some way. Keep an open mind until we gather all the facts and when we do, remedy the situation. Put it aside for now and have Nancy call everyone and invite them over. They’ll think of it as a celebration and nothing more I’m sure.”

“We’ll do our best. Thank you for letting us handle things. You could have left without saying anything.”

“None of us want to leave. We love America. We can see there are cultural problems but nothing similar to Arcos.”

Nancy smiled and told them she and her husband had to leave to figure out how to invite their friends with so little notice. They’d work it out and return Tuesday morning.

After the Moreland’s left, Faeva asked everyone to come into the dining room.

“Sit down because you won’t like what I’m about to tell you. Nancy is our leak. I picked it up. She was trying to remain calm but with great difficulty. No one realized she was terrified of us. She thinks our outward appearance is nothing more than a disguise. At some point, we will change and turn into monsters that will overwhelm the US and take over the Earth.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Not at all Doric. I picked it up directly from her. If she held a microphone it couldn’t have broadcast any louder. She holds remorse for what happened with the CIA.”

“What should we do Master Cyril?”

“Right now act as if we don’t know Faeva. We’ll deal with her tomorrow when they come back to the house. I have a plan.”

“My trust is with you always,” said Doric.

Cyril told them his plan and they all nodded their heads. Now they had settled the problem that laid ahead of them they would fix breakfast for themselves and go about their normal daily tasks.

Faeva went out back. The days had been hot. They told her the season was summer. She liked to swim in the pool and lie on the lounge chairs and read. Sunscreen, an entirely new concept, made her impervious to burning. Her fair skin had to be protected in direct sunlight. She had blond hair like most females on Arcos and many of the males.

Aleria had promised to be over early in the morning and bring Mikla and Liara with her. They would either end up staying or packing their things and leaving for another destination. All they needed was one more government hunting them.

Liara came sat down beside Faeva.

“When did you get here? I didn’t expect to see you until tomorrow.”

“I arrived about an hour ago. Now that I understand how they measure time it’s much easier for me to come and go when I’m supposed to be somewhere. Aleria has packed a lunch for us and we’re all going to the beach and having a picnic. You do understand the word picnic don’t you?”

“Yes and I want to go. I bought a new two-piece bathing suit for a trip like this one. I’ll feel more natural in it than a whole piece bathing suit. They don’t understand we consider it unnatural to cover our bodies when we swim but I can compromise with a much more revealing suit. Let me go upstairs to my room and change and get my things together. Expect me back downstairs in about fifteen of their minutes.”

Cyril borrowed the van and loaded everything they had planned taking into the back. Doric would be driving them to the beach. He’d looked up directions on the internet and decided to go to a beach called Laguna. The town in close proximity sounded charming. They’d eat there later in the evening before driving home. Places to change dotted the beach where they could take off their suits and replace them with casual clothing before they went to dinner. They were beginning to admire Americans for their thoroughness in regard to their pastimes. Faeva noticed many people spoke a strange language they didn’t understand but for the most part everyone spoke the language they understood. Nancy and Robert called it English. They called it Arcosian.

“You did remember the sun lotion Cyril. If you forgot it we need to find a store and buy some or we will all return the shade of red. I’m not looking forward to a burn because it’s very painful.”

“Yes Faeva, we brought three bottles of the stuff. I’m not a fool. I have fair skin too and I don’t go outside much.”

Doric parked and they all snatch various things and took off toward the beach, closer to the breakers.

“This looks like a perfect spot. Put up the umbrella Cyril and I’ll put down the blanket,”

“I guess we were lucky to see a documentary on beaches in Southern California. We had a first hand look at what people do at the sea shore. I know I wouldn’t have known the proper names for everything like Pacific Ocean if I hadn’t watched it. We have been lucky about a lot of things. I wouldn’t do anything but play in the water along the shore. There have been sightings of a large fish they call sharks recently along many of the beaches. Sharks can’t tell the difference between a fish and a waving arm or leg in the water. Be alert because some of them come close to shore.”

“We understand Cyril. Don’t try to be our father. I know I would be offended after so many years fending for myself and especially since I’m your guardian. Don’t you see the irony in what you’re saying?”

Faeva ran into the water but did as requested, stayed close to shore. Cyril sat down under the umbrella and put on sunscreen. He’d forgotten to do it at home. Some local males came down the beach and were eyeing the girls. They wanted them to play something called volleyball.

“Sure we’d love to but none of us have ever played the sport. Do you mind teaching us?”

“Not at all if you play. My name is Tyler and this is Judson and Gabe. We were looking for some girls on the beach to join our team. We’re not too far from the lifeguard station. Tell whoever you’re with if you need to and you’ll find us in the direction we’re walking. Your names are? “

“I’m sorry, my name is Aleria, this is my sister Merit and she’s Faeva. There’s another girl with us that might like to play. Her name is Liara.”

“Bring her along. Unusual names but pretty. We’ll see you in a few.”

Aleria and Faeva returned to the spot they’d placed their blanket and they found Cyril and Doric. They explained where they were going and asked where Liara had gone.

“I don’t know, she left with Mikla. They wanted to take a walk down the beach. Doric won’t walk directly over there with you but will follow and stay in the background just in case.”

The girls took off running down the beach toward the direction they saw the young men walking.

“Hey, we’re over here,” yelled Gabe. They saw a net strung up and people hitting a ball back and forth over it.

They looked at each other and smiled. Finally to have a little fun and meet new people. Doric had picked up one of the towels and casually walked along the shoreline. He didn’t look as he headed past the players and sat down on his towel a few yards away pretending to watch the waves break. One of the males was showing Aleria how to hold the ball and hit it over the net. He couldn’t hear anything else they were saying but he watched covertly from his vantage point. Doric didn’t like the way the man was touching Aleria but he moved away from her before he could stand up and object. He didn’t want to start a grievance with the man and alert the law element in the area. None of them could afford to be imprisoned.

The girls caught on fast but the sun neared sunset and they said goodbye and ran back down the beach. Doric followed, tired and sunburned but not too bad. He’d never had the experience on Arcos. More sun lotion was needed to sooth his skin.

“There you are Doric, thanks for watching us. We were a little scared but we had a lot of fun. Aleria gave them her number in case they wanted to get in touch. They’re aware we live in Pacific Beach and wondered why we drove to Laguna. We told them we wanted to visit a beach where we didn’t live. They laughed and accepted our answer.”

“I noticed how they were looking at all of you like you were pieces of meat. If I had my way I would have stunned them. You couldn’t have stopped me Faeva.”

“Don’t be jealous Doric, we still love you best.”

“Quiet all of you. There’s no need for any of you teasing Doric for being protective. You don’t know these individuals well enough to make a judgment about them.”

“I do Cyril. I could pick up on their thoughts and many of them were carnal but mostly they thought we were cool. Doric’s favorite new word.”

“Enough Faeva. Let’s get dressed, load up the van and look for a place to have our nightfall meal.”

Faeva whispered to Aleria to tell her when they call her house. She wanted to experience exactly what Tyler had been thinking. She didn’t care if she ever saw him again. Aleria expressed concern over her becoming fertilized but she said she’d brought something for it. She’d never had a carnal relationship and she had reached the age of consent and wanted to have the experience and nothing would change her mind. Aleria shrugged and walked into the restroom.

The rest of the evening passed quickly. They ate at a Mexican restaurant not knowing how the food would taste. Mikla asked the server to suggest some things since it was their first time eating there. When they started eating their food they were all smiles.

“This is the type of food Nancy mentioned one day to me. The people whose language we find strange eat this food. She called it Mexican. I like Mexican.”

“We do too Merit but it’s about time we go home before it gets much later.”

Cyril needed to leave. The length of time they had spent on the beach had worn him out. He needed rest before the morning arrived.

They climbed into the van and Doric drove away from the curb. He could hear Merit say she guessed this experience showed they had become real Californians.

SIX

Cyril dragged himself out of bed, dressed and left for the dining room which now had become their unofficial meeting place. Doric had food on his plate he assumed he fixed for himself. Funny he didn’t know he could cook.

“I made some food for you too. Look in the oven in the kitchen. You know everyone will show up late. The Moreland’s will probably be here before anyone else except maybe Faeva. I know she’s up because I heard the shower running.”

“You’re right but I’m here now. I heard a knock at the door and someone came inside. Don’t you two ever lock the front door?”

“We forgot last night I guess but Cyril put a spell on the entry so if it’s someone we don’t know they’d get zapped.”

“Good morning everyone,” said Mikla coming into the dining room. Liara followed him with Aleria, her brother and sister entering right behind. They were all in attendance.

“This is my plan,” said Cyril. He spent about ten minutes explaining what he had in mind. Everyone agreed it might do the trick and save them from more aggressive measures.

Hey everybody we’re here. Nancy and Robert came into the dinning room as if nothing had happened. Fine thought Cyril, they’re in for the ride of their lives.

We want to take the two of you on an outing with us. The van is out front and Doric will ride. All of us are going out together.

“Why all the mystery?”

“No mystery Robert. We want to surprise you and thank you for all you’ve done for us.”

Nancy and Robert looked puzzled but smiled and followed them to the van. Robert realized where they were taking then but kept quiet. Faeva knew his thoughts. His fear was escalating.

“There’s no need for anyone to be frightened. We only want to show you something, relax.”

Doric parked off the road and they walked down the path to the cave where the pods were hidden. Cyril raised his hand and the shielding disappeared. They entered and Nancy and Robert were directed to get into one of the pods.

“Doric and I are going along with Nancy, Robert, Faeva and Aleria. Stay here and watch for any one exiting the corridor while we’re gone. Aleria will disguise our movement but that isn’t always fail safe. Please watch the pod and if you have to leave suddenly send us a burst so we know your coordinates.”

Aleria and Faeva were already in the pod with Nancy and Robert. They entered the pod and disappeared. Nancy started screaming when they went rushing through the corridor.

Aleria started to hum and touched Nancy’s forehead. She immediately calmed.

“Listen to me the both of you, we know who called the CIA. Nancy you should have trusted us. We have never meant you any harm. What we know will be no help to your government. We would leave before we’d give them any information against our will. There are others on Earth. After a few days the biomorphs could pick up on them. They are all in hiding thanks to your conspiracy theory assholes in charge of your government.”

“Cyril, control yourself.”

“I know, I know and I’m sorry. Robert you wanted to make discoveries, and here you are traveling at light speed through what we call a corridor and you call a wormhole. There are hundreds of them all over the universe except in your area because your planet is thought of as backward and violent. I don’t hold the same view but I have to admit many are not too bright. They have strange ideas and are prone to fighting over the littlest thing and especially your politics. Until you grow beyond childish behavior no one will do anything more than look, listen and leave. You’re destroying your planet yet denying it’s happening when it’s right before your eyes. No enlightened civilization will have anything to do with you other than make you an experimental project.”

“Doric if you would continue I have to pay more attention to the coordinates.

“You’re both adults. Look at the chance no one else has been given, the opportunity to travel through space. We’re taking you to Landea. We won’t stay too long. The planet is similar to Earth except they have become one people regardless of races and all the rest. We’re going to land and you can walk around and take a look. Their language is very close to yours as well so if you listen carefully you should understand what is being said. You must be calm and not attract too much attention. They can detain us here if they think we are aliens uninvited to their planet.”

Doric hesitated and Nancy rolled her eyes. She hung her head and softly said, “I’m sorry.”

“You should be Mrs. Moreland because we harbored no ill will. We wanted to be free to live a simple life. None of us have had any option to even think about a family or anything else. Mikla and Liara want to have a child. Now we don’t know if we can stay because of your blunder. People on Earth are afraid of everything especially if it’s something they have been told doesn’t exist, like aliens from another planet. We’ve watched your movies and they show monsters who devour people or look like insects. I can assure you I’ve never seen anything of the sort on any planet I’ve traveled to and neither has anyone else in our party. Inhabited planets with an evolved society look much like us or like you, humans or human like.”

“I didn’t know. My belief was you were scouting us ahead of a planned invasion. I became frightened and wanted to be safe so I called the CIA.”

“What makes you think any society with the capability to travel from planet to planet would want to invade yours? Your technology is behind and your society is bloodthirsty. Anything you’re afraid of you either put in some bunker or shoot before you ask any questions. Your religious groups are hostile and follow books with weird writings that make no sense. They condemn almost everyone and everything. They have no light in them. Yet we chose to live among you because we thought down deep humans on your planet were good people. You proved us wrong.”

“I need to interrupt your tirade Doric. I think we’ve heard enough. I know you’re angry. Please prepare for exiting the corridor and a landing in the hills. Aleria dampen our signature frequency waves so they can’t detect us. I’ll turn on the cloaking mechanism so they can’t see us coming.”

“You’re damn right I’m angry and before you chide me for using a cuss word, don’t. I know what they’re called because I have been reading many of the books from your lab Cyril. I’m more than angry, I feel betrayed by people who pretended to like us.”

“Doric, I’m sorry about what happened last night but I had nothing to do with it and my colleagues don’t know about the incident at all. Nancy is a scientist true but not in the same area as I am. She is female and scares easily. We have discussed what happened and she is remorseful. You say you wouldn’t change into monsters but our society doesn’t know this nor those who write books or create movies. Our scientists have projected what aliens would look like and it’s nothing remotely resembling humans.”

“We know this Mr. Moreland and I’m sorry to say your scientists are not too smart. In fact they are terribly unsophisticated when it comes to outer space and the universe. Many of their theories are laughable.”

“We’re beginning to understand these facts Faeva, but no one is going to change over night. They never do in our society. I can only say I’m terribly sorry for what happened to you. Unfortunately I can’t change last night but I can make sure it never happens again. The incident almost broke up my marriage. My wife is still frightened by the unknown but maybe by the end of the day she’ll feel differently. She’s promised she will never interfere in your lives and still wants to support your endeavors in creating a home on Earth.”

“Faeva, he’s telling the truth and Nancy is remorseful. I sense their emotions. Are you in agreement?”

“I don’t know Aleria but I will take your word. I’m getting muddled emotions especially from Nancy. We have to stop dragging this out. What more can they do beyond apologizing. I forgive Nancy and everyone else should too. After they visit Landea, their minds should be changed about aliens.”

“Prepare yourselves, we’re about to land. You see, not a bad ride at all. The air will clear and I’ll have to put an obscuring field around that pod. I perform the task and not a piece of technology. We need to disembark immediately so I can disguise the pod.”

“Oh my God, this place is beautiful,” exclaimed Nancy. Her husband stood in silence with his mouth hanging open.

“I don’t think your God will hear you here but if you must call out to him fine. Arcosians considered this to be a planet of perfection, a paradise. The daily temperature and their annual rainfall is balanced. They have no need to covet anything. They share all things here and live in harmony with nature. Their technology is farther advanced than even our own. They call themselves people of the planet. There are no other names that would divide them. Even with all this beauty they work jobs to pay for their needs and have goals in life. Nothing is assigned to them. They believe hard work and pride in family and home is above all else. They worship nothing outside themselves but show reverence toward their planet. Landea is a living thing to this society and because of this idea they take care they don’t destroy of pollute their home world.”

Faeva pointed ahead of them and said, “I believe that’s a shopping area over there. Why don’t we walk down this pathway and take a look? Don’t worry Nancy, you’ll blend in. Their speech, mannerisms and dress is similar to America. There’ll be a few words you won’t recognize or understand but ignore them. If nothing else and someone speaks to you directly respond to what you do understand and otherwise smile.”

Faeva noticed Nancy slide her hand into Robert’s. He smiled and squeezed it. She was glad they had reconciled.

“Remember we can’t purchase anything here but food. I don’t have enough of their currency for anything but a meal for all of us.”

“Cyril, don’t worry I have saved a lot of currency from Landea. I’ve been here numerous times.”

“Fine, if the Moreland’s want to purchase souvenirs we’ll have enough to make that happen. I’d suggest a book concerning the marvels of this planet, it’s history and society. Some of them have holographic images. I love what is taken as common here, but it’s not to me. I’ve been amazed every time I have visited this planet. The people are friendly, compassionate and are not worried about anyone creating violence. They have strict laws and you will be incinerated immediately. Therefore everything is peaceful. They’re not a violent society but they are highly moral and if you break their laws, there is no trial, no jury. You’re simply eliminated. They have not resorted to any measures I have described in thousands of years. The society evolved and live together in harmony. They’re not telepathic so have no fear.”

Cyril noticed Nancy looked frightened.

Aleria spoke up this time. “Nancy don’t you have any backbone or trust? You fear anything you don’t understand. These people aren’t the barbarians. Between your Earth culture and those on this planet, Earth is in its infancy and they are the barbarians and not the Landens. I know you’ll find what I’m saying offensive but I never tell lies. Can you be rational and allow all of us to enjoy our day trip to this planet? Be thankful you get to experience something no other person from Earth has so far. I won’t be a part of anymore lectures. If you don’t understand what we mean then I think it has become necessary we wipe you memory of our arrival on Earth.”

“No Aleria, I’m terribly sorry. I don’t know how many times I’m expected to apologize. You are misreading me because I was thinking the exact opposite. Personally, I admire how civilized they have become and the beauty of their planet. Thank you for bringing me here.”

“Then I must do the apologizing. I guess my contempt obscured my clarity. We’ll consider this issue closed.”

“I smell food,” said Doric. “Follow me, we have time to eat.”

Everyone laughed breaking up the negativity passing between them. Doric, always the food connoisseur.

“I want to purchase some Denarian plums to take home with us. There’s a mart two stores down. Anyone else want to go inside?”

“All of us do Faeva, slow down. I’ve never seen you so excited.”

“I adore this planet Cyril. I want to bring back a number of things.”

“Has everyone finished shopping because I saw an Arcosian walk by this shop. We need to leave quickly before we’re noticed.”

“Follow me,” said Faeva. “I know a short cut to where we left the pod. You know what you must do Cyril. Don’t worry, no one will start a fight They know what would happen to them if they did. It’s an automatic response controlled by, well you would understand if I said computers, which isn’t entirely correct but will suffice.”

Everyone held onto their packages tightly and followed close behind Faeva. They had no doubt she knew where she was going. Doric stayed to their rear. Aleria was holding Nancy’s hand.

“Get inside the pod quickly. I have to let down the shielding before we can reenter the corridor. Prepare yourselves. Aleria you know what to do.”

“Cyril have we gone far enough they won’t detect us?”

“Robert I’m only safe to say I think so. The Arcosians are a high tech society as well. I have no idea what improvements could have been made by scientists since we left even though you think it a short time. Unfortunately it’s not. Quit dwelling on the worst case situation. Time is circular in this universe and not a straight line.”

“We’re back. Everyone unbuckle and exit to the rear please. Cyril and I will position our pod back into the proper place in the cave for camouflage.”

“What do I tell my friends about all of these artifacts and books I brought back with me Cyril?”

“You and Nancy tell them you went to a science fiction and fantasy convention and bought everything while attending. We know you have them because we’ve been devouring every bit of information we can find from discs, television documentaries and books.”

“Ingenious! I don’t know why I didn’t think of your ruse Cyril. Nancy bought books but mostly food and clothing. I guess her items can fall under the same umbrella too if anyone should ask. I’d tell my scientist buddies but I know they won’t believe me. We have an old adage here, seeing is believing. Since they didn’t go with us, they’ll think I was dreaming artifacts or no artifacts. It’s the nature of man in my belief to be skeptical.”

Everyone was waiting for them in the cave. They got back into the van and drove to Cyril’s with a short stop at Aleria’s house. Faeva and Aleria had a pool party planned for the friends they had met at the beach. Tyler had called Aleria.

“Come inside Robert. If Nancy wants to go home she’s free to do as she likes. Doric and I want to discusses how to get jobs and otherwise bland into life here in the United States. We can’t do that without driving licenses or some sort of IDs, social security cards and birth certificates. We learned about all of these things in a documentary we watched a couple of days ago. Let’s go into the dining room and I’ll get the snacks out of the cold box in the kitchen Aleria left for us.”

Nancy smiled and said, “I’ll stay Cyril and that cold box as you call it, has an actual name. They’re refrigerators in this country. You can talk things over with Robert. I’ll go into the kitchen and see what you have left and make lunch for all of us. I can’t help you obtaining documents. I don’t know how to get them but my husband might.”

“This will be tough Cyril but I think Augustine Cavalos, may be able to obtain what you’re requesting. The price of such documents may be steep. I don’t mean turning you into NASA or some other governmental group. I mean fees. He’ll be taking a big chance to get you what you need. Cavalos is also an astrophysicist and works with me on a project. Not a secret government project but a grant funded one. He won’t want to do anything to endanger his reputation or position. I’ll call him and ask him to come over for lunch. I doubt he’ll hesitate because he was with me when you arrived and has been curious about all of you. One thing I must stress, he would never tell anyone of your presence in the US.”

“Good, you call him. We can’t move forward without these documents.”

Robert took out his cell phone and made a call. He turned to Cyril and said, “He’ll be over in twenty minutes. His wife and children are at a kid’s party. He opted to stay behind to catch up on work he’d brought home. The problem is he doesn’t like lying to his wife but he left her a note saying he had to go out for awhile, nothing specific.”

Nancy heard a knock on the door and went to the living room to check. She came back with Augustine.

“Sit down Auggie,” said Robert. I have a lot to tell you.” He told him everything about Cyril and his group from day one when he had first met them. Augustine had returned to work and hadn’t had any further contact until now.

“Wow, that’s some story you’re telling me. I’m having a difficult time believing all of your tales, but I’ll help you get what you’ve requested. I can at least do that for you.”

“How long will it take Mr. Cavalos?”

“I’m not sure but about a week is my best guess. I’ll get back to Robert as soon as I can.”

“We believe you. After we finish lunch, we’re taking another trip Robert.”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Not at all but I’ve learned from your old adage that seeing is believing so that’s the lesson we plan to teach skeptics every time we come into contact with such an ignorant viewpoint.”

“Are you calling me ignorant?”

“Should we be Mr. Cavalos?”

“No, but I’m not going to believe such a far fetched story. Our scientists know there is no life on any planet we can conceivably reach.”

“Then let’s test your theory. Come with us. You won’t be harmed unless you’re afraid to challenge what you believe.”

“What about Faeva and Aleria, don’t we need them?”

“Yes Doric and I’ll call them to see if they can cancel.”

“Cyril put down his cell and turned to Doric and said, “The girls will be here within five minutes. Luckily for us their friends called and cancelled. They’ll visit tomorrow. We’re home free.”

“Good and I know where you learned that last line. I watched that disc too.”

Robert grinned but Auggie looked frightened. Doric noticed the same look Nancy had earlier. Cyril wondered if all scientists on Earth were so blinded by dogma and ignorance. The fact they lived in fear disturbed Cyril.

“Bring the van around front Doric. By the time the engine warms, Faeva and Aleria should be here. Let’s go outside gentlemen and wait for them.”

Nancy wanted to go with them but there wasn’t enough room in the pod. She stayed behind with the proviso that she would get her own guided tour soon.

“Get into the pod Auggie.”

Soon they were flying down one of the corridors. Even Doric didn’t know Cyril’s destination.

“We’re not going to Landea this time because we saw Arcosians when we visited. They spend a lot of time there. More than any off world place. I know another planet similar and we’ll go there. It’ll take us longer but it’s well worth the visit. By the way Auggie, this is what you call a wormhole. There is a wormhole highway all over the universe. You’re backward scientists are not aware of them yet. Arcosians call them corridors.”

“Prepare yourselves, we’re nearing Bandilos 5-3.”

“You’re taking me to another planet? What is the meaning of the name? I don’t believe this is happening.”

“Why not, it’s a very real experience and one common to all of us. Bandilos would translate into Earth in their prominent language. The numbers represent how far they are from their sun and the number of moons. I’m receiving a message. We have coordinates to land. The society living on this planet are a people who welcome extraterrestrial visitors. They don’t care where our origination point is located. They’re friendly and open to all living beings and are human, not humanoid. Their genetic makeup is identical to yours. The culture is the only difference as it evolved

on this particular planet. I guess you could call it a tourist stop for those who know of its existence. They’ll be surprised to see the two of you.”

They exited the pod and were received by a welcome group. Cyril explained to them why they were visiting. A couple of them laughed and nodded.

“This way Robert and Auggie. We’re going to watch a movie that’s been prepared for visitors in a conservatory.”

All of them sat down in seats with many other people. The movie started and it was a lesson on the nature of the universe, the many planets populated and information on the various societies. Auggie sat rapt with his mouth hanging open. When they came to Earth, their Earth, Auggie and Robert looked upset by what was being said. The narrator informed those watching about the way everyone avoided going there except a few that considered it a science project. They called the Earth residents isolationists and encumbered by many superstitions that held them back. They weren’t ready to accept the truth. Therefore, they considered Earth, off limits. The film continued showing the wormholes running throughout the universe. They didn’t remember how they were created but every high tech society used them.

“Now the film is over, let’s look around. They have what you call observatories all over the planet. I’ll take you to one so you can look at the stars and possibly get an idea where you are. I don’t know if astronomers have discovered Bandilos 3-5 yet.”

“Why so many telescopes?”

“Well Auggie this planet is primarily interested in space exploration and science in general. They have many occupations but those are the primary. They have no military nor do they need one. They do have countries as you do but they don’t fight wars.”

“So Earth is the only planet that’s involved in wars and unrest?”

“No, there are others but Earth is at the top of the list because everyone believes you will get past your squabbling. Those below are the worst at this time. We ignore all of them.”

“We, what do you mean we?”

“Those planets that belong to the Accord. They have representatives on many worlds throughout the universe. The one on Arcos was taken over by the Silium directed by the Ordo Magicus. Arcos most likely is no longer a member. My true home is Earth which is where I was born. The Arcosians abducted me on one of their visits when I was a child.”

“Have you located your parents yet?”

“I haven’t made an attempt.”

“Why not?”

“Auggie, let’s be realistic. If I find my parents and tell them what happened to me, do you really think they’ll believe me? They’ll take me to the nearest mental health facility. I would have to demonstrate the truth of what I was saying like I did for you. Somehow it would end up on the television, internet or both. They would ridicule me without any reason to make nasty remarks on social websites. I would get calls for interviews and the CIA would show up at my door again.”

“You’re right and I apologize for being short-sighted. I’ve seen enough, please take me home.”

“When they came up the walk, Nancy flung open the door and came out looking concerned. You weren’t gone long. Where did you go?”

“For a short ride Nancy, like the one we took earlier. I’ll fill you in later.”

“I’m going to take off. My wife will get suspicious if I’m gone too long. I have no intention of telling her about any of this. You’re right about your view Cyril. If I had the guts to tell my wife everything, she’d think I was having a break down and yes, I’d be forced to see a therapist and my reputation would be ruined. I’ll work on getting what you suggested as soon as possible. Get the list ready and Robert can give it to me tomorrow at work. Good night, and thank you for the ride to wonderland.”

Auggie got into his car and drove down the street.

“I need a nap.”

“We’re going back to Aleria’s house Cyril and Doric is coming with us,” said Faeva.

The Moreland’s went home and the house was quiet enough Cyril could finally get some of the sleep he had needed for so long.

SEVEN

Doric brought everyone back with him to the house including Mikla and Liara. He considered these people his family. He read online there was a music festival going on in an area of San Diego called the Gas Lamp. They had changed for the event except Doric. They were going to take a conveyance downtown because the parking would be limited. They hadn’t memorized the names of all the transportation but they were aware of congestion in the downtown area.

“I’m going upstairs to change. Could one or two of you see if Cyril will come along? I’m doubtful but he’s been full of surprises lately.”

Aleria and her brother tip-toed into the lab, the most obvious place to find him. He was asleep on the cot in the back. He had books open and strewn across his workbench. They knew his work ethic. The signs of a new project apparent, but whatever the subject, he hadn’t shared the information with any of them. Something they did roused him.

“Were the two of you looking for anything special?”

“I guess you could say so. We wanted to see if you’d like to venture downtown with us to a musical show. Merit begged Doric so he gave into her. All of us are going and we hoped you would too.”

“Actually, I’d love to go.”

“Really Cyril, you’ll go with us?”

“Yes, it’ll give me a good look at the locals in the area and probably tourists as well. I need to put on California garb so I blend in aside from the fact I need to change clothes period. Can I have about fifteen minutes to get ready?”

“Of course you can. We’ll go downstairs and tell the others. The event is out of doors. You need to wear good shoes for walking and take your cell phone.”

“Why are you waiting? I need some privacy.”

“Oh yeah, I’m sorry. Loren and I’ll be in the living room with everyone else.”

Cyril came downstairs and they stood up. “Do we have plenty of money with us,” he asked.

“Yes, we all have more than enough between us. How about you?”

“I should be fine I’m sure. This will be an adventure.”

Once they got on the trolley going downtown, they relaxed. Everyone was laughing and talking and no one paid much attention to them. They’d never seen anything like it. There were people inside barricaded streets. Stages were lined up all the way down the street. Store fronts were lit to entice people inside and all the restaurants were open for business with special menus for the event. Merit spun around in a circle trying to take in all the sights and sounds.

Music started to flow from the stages. People called them bands. Some began to dance if their gyrations could be called by the chosen word technically. They were smiling and laughing. Loren took hold of Aleria’s hand and tried to mimic what the rest were doing in the street. Mikla and Liara were attempting their best to copy them and Doric and Faeva struggled to follow suit. Merit looked at Cyril and he took her hand and joined the crowd. If anyone saw them from Arcos, they’d be stunned.

“The time is late. Why don’t we buy some souvenir shirts and go home”

“Yeah, I’m tired too. I’m not use to this activity they call dancing.”

“Trust me Mikla, my feet understand your concern and sympathize.”

“Doric are the trolleys still running this late or do we need to get a commercial car to take us home?”

“What do you mean by commercial car Cyril?”

“One of the cars we saw lined up outside of the barriers. They pick up people and take them to various destinations. I’ve heard them called city cabs and some of them say taxi on the outside of them. We can afford to take one home if necessary but I’d prefer to return the way we came.”

“Okay, we’ll leave now. I’m pretty sure the trolleys are still running; besides we’d have to take two cars. There’s too many of us.”

“What do you mean by okay Doric? Where did that word come from?”

“Television. People in shows I have watched say it all the time. I believe it is in common usage. It’s another word of agreement like yes.”

“Okay,” said Cyril stressing the word in exasperation.

“Next time any of you start spouting a new word that’s strictly used on Earth can you please tell us what it means first? If anyone is listening I don’t want to appear to be stupid.”

“You’re funny Cyril.”

“I’m not trying to be Merit, but I think you meant to be complimentary. I need to try their alcohol preparations because right now, it might soothe my aching feet. Let’s go home.”

“You’re supposed to drink them Cyril. Not pour them on your feet.”

“Have you learned the phrase figure of speech yet? I wasn’t being serious. I meant I would drink them.”

“Sorry Master Cyril, I misunderstood.” Doric looked embarrassed but the trolley stopped and they took seats.

“Cyril stared at Doric a few minutes before he said, “You remember the movie we watched a few nights ago? They said it was horror. If I recall the title contained stein on the end. He had an apprentice called Igor. If you don’t stop your foolishness, I’m going to start calling you Igor.”

Faeva and some of the others stifled a laugh. Cyril could be someone to be reckoned with if he got angry. Faeva had never seen him really angry but tonight he at least showed his disapproval clearly if not in a comical way.

“Here comes our stop. Get ready to disembark everyone.

Hurry, our bus is early. We need to run across the street before it leaves," said Cyril.

“Oh it won’t leave. I made sure,” said Aleria giggling.

Aleria never giggled. They eyed her but decided not to ask any questions and board the bus. Home, only five minutes a way. All of them were changing and faster than Cyril had expected.

Aches and pains plagued Cyril’s body. He realized his recent inactivity had been detrimental to his health. How could he have let himself go? The answer didn’t come to mind. The Silium had put him through a regimen of physical activity. They believed if the body was primed the mind would follow. He should have listened and kept up his dynamic exercise. Cyril ran into Doric in the upper hallway.

“Are you feeling sore all over your body Doric?”

“Some but not anything that a pill can’t fix. Nancy put some minor pain pills in the cabinet. She called them over-the-counter. I don’t know what she meant but she said they were safe to take. I know which ones are right for your condition. Follow me.”

“Hello, is anybody home?”

“Come into the kitchen Nancy. Cyril and I are in here.”

Nancy entered the kitchen and didn’t know what to think. “What’s wrong with the two of you?”

“I’d like to say too much excitement but no it’s something else. I think Cyril had an overdose of dancing. I’m a little sore but he can barely walk.”

“I’m sorry guys, excuse my laughing. Here take three of these tablets and I’ll go upstairs and run a bath for you. You need to soak. I think I put some Epsom salts in the cabinet under the sink. They’ll help relax your muscles.” Nancy left the room shaking her head.

She came back a couple of minutes later and told Cyril the bath was ready. She told him to soak for at least thirty minutes. Then towel off and get dressed.

“I have Cyril in the bath. Are you suffering from the same thing Doric?”

“I’m a little sore but otherwise I’m fine.”

“Did you go somewhere last night?”

“We went downtown to a music festival. All of us. Cyril hasn’t been active for awhile. The Silium put him through rigorous exercises while he lived at the Lyra Dome. Once he got away from them he discontinued the exercising and became physically inactive to a degree. Mental pursuits took the place of bioenergizing. It’s his body rebelling to sudden activity. Why are you here Nancy?”

“Robert and I talked and we decided I should come by and do some housecleaning and cooking today. Yesterday, at least for us, put us in a state of mild disbelief. We know what we saw and it’s not disbelief in what you showed us but rather in what we’ve been told all of our lives. I guess this is my peace offering. If you don’t know what I mean, there’s a dictionary in the lab and access to the internet.”

Doric laughed and said he understood. They looked up and noticed Cyril go into his laboratory with a large towel wrapped around him. Nothing could be funnier than to see a High Master Wizard holding his back and trying to keep his towel from falling off.
