a simpler place indeed.

Thursday afternoon Dad and I had been gardening and, in an effort to keep the cats from using the back of the end of the garden as a run, so Dad put a piece of netting down in the corner of the hedge. And, as we’d been checking the netting, we frightened a very young sparrow, which had flown straight into the green plastic netting, getting itself well caught up in it. So there was Dad, a few minutes later, carefully getting the small bird from it and, seconds later I’d looked up, to see it fly away. And, I’m sure it was a happy bird.

Friday had been the Azda and an observation of prices going up, yet further, with an evening spent watching a couple of VHS tapes that had been passed to me by Barry, the other Sunday, ‘The Ark In Space’ and ‘The Deathly Assassin’. I had thoroughly enjoyed watching the first so much, I had to watch the second. It’d been just like a trip back in time for me, taking me back to the nineteen seventies, when I was far younger and, the world had seemed a far simpler place indeed.

Any other day, I'd let it go...

So, I’d been walking up the hill passed the bombed-out church more than a tad narked bt pain in my back and hips and, some irksome remarks made by an irascible individual on VR, I had walked passed some young people hanging by the railings outside the church, dressed in a very European style and speaking Spanish. One young buck with dark skin, black hair and white teeth had decided to show off to his the young women with him, by mocking me, as I passed. Now, I’m used to ‘John Lennon’ and ‘Robin Gibb’, and this was similar, although different. In this fellows eyes, the way I dressed. Either way, he had given me grief, goodstyle, thinking he was original and funny: I had found him neither. And, any other day, I’d have let it go. This time though, my response had been very different. I’d walked on awhile then stopped and, turning to my right a little, I had called out, “In English, the word is ‘prick’.” And, I think the point had been made, ‘coz as I stood there waiting for him to react, the laughter ceased and Mister Show-Off stopped his mocking ditty. After that, I had continued my walk to the project, where we gave meals to far more people than usual, seeing quite a new faces at the church doors.

… rooms upside down now, as I wash the walls and look for discs, cleaning spindles as I do: and, mid-point, Dad decides to get rid of a fly. Nothing funnier than watching two grown men chasing a fly, to try and get rid and ideally, not kill it.

watching ‘True Blood’, feeling dead chuffed...

00:29 Jul 24 2011
Times Read: 843

Last night at the end of voluntary work and, then as I woke sore and aching Friday morning I recalled the words of a pleasant drunk, standing at the church doors, pointing to my chest and, saying to me; “You have the soul of an angel.”

And, the thing was, he was an absolute Grock of a fellow! That one remark had made my night. And, that thought kept me smiling for much of Friday, even as we shopped at the Azda. Come a Sunny Saturday I walked, bought cotton and cooked omelettes prior to resting awhile, as much needed; then settled down watching ‘True Blood’, feeling dead chuffed that I had several episodes to watch and, pleased to find it was as good as I remembered it was…

It’s not protocol...

01:35 Jul 21 2011
Times Read: 849

Tuesday I went to see the fellow from Igneus, wary of what to expect. And, although the interview had been tolerable, although when it comes down to it, the fellows parting comment said it all, “You do realise that this programme is mandatory?”

And considering that the next time I sign on there’ll be some sort of hell getting to both appointments and then onto voluntary work. As it is, I’m going to provide fun for myself over that one. My only consolation had been some reconstructed and refurbished episodes of the first run of Doctor Who, starring William Hartnell.

That’d definitely made my evening.

Come Wednesday I was up with Dad and while he did some washing. I edged the front lawn, then made rock buns and, then after a rest I prepared the chicken casserole for tea, bar the dumplings, which I’d add once I got back from physiotherapy, which had ended up as frustration incarnate.

It’d started with a third party message from my doctor, via her receptionist, who decidedly needs communication training. It seemed that both the doctor and the physiotherapist had agreed that I needed an ‘extension X-Ray’, so I’d tootled along there, only to be told by a slip of a thing with hair straight from Rosetti, who’d said simply, “We don’t do that. It’s not protocol.” And, if nothing is guaranteed to wind me up, it’s a phrase like that. As I said to Karl much later, ‘how can I get a reasonable prognosis, IF I can’t get a diagnosis?”

an old-style cornet, as a gale blew round my head...

01:20 Jul 18 2011
Times Read: 861

I was up and dressed to be ready for eleven and Barry calling, who I haven’t seen in person for over twenty years. And, he pulled up in his little car and got in in and, we were off. We went to Moreton shore, for a cheese batch ‘n a can of Vimto then sitting awhile to listen and chat as the wind and rain rocked the car. Then we’d walked on the promenade to face the driving wind and rain a moment to breath the air as the waves got high and loud. I filmed some of it. We had ended up at New Brighton, talking of the past and some of our regrets in Life as we had driven on up the promenade, to see the current new construction at New Brighton, and yes, there’s commercialisation there, but it wasn’t as bad as I’d expected. Then we’d got to see the new re-built Pavillion. Again, I had a pleasant surprise. The old theatre I’d recalled was not so dissimilar from what they had taken down, that I’d liked so much. I had an ice-cream... an old-style cornet, as a gale blew round my head. And, after all that, I got home in time to make the gravy up, for Dad to use as he saw to the roast meal…

Murder Ahoy!

01:00 Jul 16 2011
Times Read: 878

The first evening cum night, the one after a full-moon, found me walking back from Grahams, after watching nude nuns with big guns and priest, somewhat of a religious theme? I seem to recall, typing as I watch the first episode of 'torchwood miracle day' yet again. And, we had two baking hot days prior to this, and boy is the air cooler. And boy-it had been good seeing 'priest' on a big screen, while we smoked drank coffee and I told him a little of visiting the sensory centre and testing a few products, to ... and he said "so what did you test. So I had told hi, little cocktail sausages!"

My distinct memories were distinct and, going again will be an experience, no doubt.

"But, I must remember to write in the code number, or I won't know what you're writing about!" An I swear down, that lady handing them questionnaires out, looked just like Margaret Rutherford! Murder-Ahoy!

...the thought had occurred

13:35 Jul 14 2011
Times Read: 891

I didn’t sleep too well, Tuesday night, then woke up really early Wednesday morning, in anticipation of phoning the doctors for an appointment and, well before my alarm was due to go off at 8:00 a.m. As it was, the alarm went off as I lay there, already dwelling, on what the results might be. I was on the phone as suggested, at 8:30 a.m. ringing again and again, as I kept getting the engaged tone. Eventually, after fourteen minutes I got through, only to be told that it was a very busy morning and, there weren’t any appointments available, yet she could offer me a telephone triage. Needing answers, I’d said ‘yes’, of course. I spent the morning in my room writing, listening out for the phone as I did so. Finally the phone rang and I dashed to the phone, to be told that she had spoken to the physiotherapist and they would continue to see me and yes, she was prepared to go over the X-Rays, after I’d obtained them for viewing, ‘but I had to understand that…’ and that is when my brain stopped hearing what she said, the words ‘degenerative disease’… in relating to my spine. When I went to Karl’s in the evening, I recall saying to him, “I’m a depressive and I feel kind of surprised that I’m not being depressed about all of this…”

Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that he’d just passed to me new episodes of two of my favourite tv shows ‘Eureka’ and ‘Warehouse 13’, as well as a copy of ‘Torchwood: Miracle Day’, which I thought I’d miss through going to my voluntary work? I doubt it. But, the thought had occurred.

Grissoms finest... so says channel 5

01:06 Jul 13 2011
Times Read: 901

I woke up to go to the doctor’s to see about making an appointment. It turned out that there was nothing available till the 8th August 2011 ‘so phone in the morning, as normal,’ I’d been told. So then I went home, to phone physio to apologise for my walkout and, phone Arrow Park Hospital, to see about viewing my X-Rays under The Freedom Of Information Act: it seemed that I had to write. On the way home I’d bought some raisins with next weeks Radio Times and, with those I’d made rock buns. Dad and I both agreed that they tasted to good. Come the evening I had watched CSI, the two-parter where Gill Grissom leaves and Ray Lanston arrives and Nate Haskell is the driving force of the episode; and then, the episode after Warrick Brown had been shot. And still, that episode has me crying, particularly ‘that scene’ where on dvd Warrick tells a psychiatrist of ‘the one man in my life,’ Grissom, as he watches.

Still looking...

00:10 Jul 12 2011
Times Read: 908

I awoke on Monday morning feeling nervous as hell. I’d been waiting ages to find out the results of the X-Ray for ages now and, as my Father gave me a lift to hospital my nerves had nigh on got the better of me. So, before I got to the physiotherapy doors I’d already stopped to have a much-needed smoke. Unfortunately Mrs Burton had seemed to loathe showing me my X-Ray and, she had directed me to my own doctor, to find out more. And, that had wound me up goodstyle: I wanted to understand. And, when I got to reception, the woman booking the appointment just faffed and, just a few moments into it, I’d said, “Nevermind, I’ve got to go. I want to go home.” So home I’d gone, walking slowly on a very warm, sunny day. Of course I’d stopped off at Raby Mere awhile, to sit on the wall ad enjoy a quiet smoke, before going home, to get on with some gardening, edging the back lawn and finishing trimming the top of the Beech hedge, that Dad got rained off from. Come the evening I watched a documentary on Delphi, the home of The Oracle, with whom the expression ‘Know Thyself’ is associated…

Looking for an answer

09:31 Jul 11 2011
Times Read: 914

Spent much of the day pottering, doing many of those little jobs I’d meant to do, yet got stopped a couple of times, due to light showers, which I found ever-so frustrating. But, knowing what Monday held, I’d needed distraction. Twice I’ve been to hospital to see ‘bout that Xray and twice there’s been no answer. And, although I want some answers as to what’s up with my lower spine, I feel rotten waiting for them.

Come the evening I watched ‘Coast’ with Dad, then once he was in bed I ate some fruit, prior to doing some recording, then going on VR. I hadn’t stayed online long, as there wasn’t enough distraction for my manic mood: I just couldn’t calm down, so turned the machine off, put the bin out and, then went to my room to write awhile…

... or lose my dole?

14:30 Jul 09 2011
Times Read: 934

I awoke early, for a Saturday; Dad had already got the washing done and on the line and had the front door off and, was shaving it down as I made my coffee.

While I worked away on a piece of writing I watched ‘Drive Angry’ with in the indomitable Nicholas Cage, sitting amongst a pile of discs, using the ‘new’ on the ‘lil Acer as the HP didn’t like playing the film. I was ever-so pleased to see it, as I like almost anything he is in and, it acted to distract me a little from the letter that had arrived, from Igneus, the firm running a ‘work-related’ programme. The letter had annoyed me greatly, in part as it’s from a private concern, making money from the unemployment of many like me and, they told fibs.

The letter had begun with, ‘we were unable to contact you’, while confirming detail’s already obtained, from a woman called Tina, who works for Ingeus, details I have written down on the calendar. I suppose this letter could be considered an exemplar of what to expect from this private firm, called Igneus, which makes money on the backs of the unemployed. As I’ve had experience of private firms like this one, doing contract work for the government, in the late seventies and then the early eighties, it does not behove well. My experiences of their schemes back then were not good and, already I see how this will progress. Yet, what choice do I have, go with it, or lose my dole?

Assumption and Expectation

01:50 Jul 09 2011
Times Read: 957

So Sulks, who offered me support, is not who I assumed them to be. In fact, they are the person I had written of it transpires. Yet, does it surprise me, that someone isn’t who he or she purport to be here? Not at all. After all, isn’t VR a microcosm of Life, with all it’s varied tangled lives, half-truth’s and truth? The pity is, for whatever reason, I expect more from those I talk with. I expect them to be as honest with me, as I am with them. And sometimes, that seems too much to expect.

I told him...

It had been a busy Thursday night I woke with an aching body: but shopping 'had to be done…' On the way from the car to the Azda, Dad made mention that he hadn’t seen our neighbour to the left at the Azda for awhile: “Well, he said that there’s too many older people in the way and slowing him down,” I told him.

“Well, I didn’t think that I was in the way,” said Dad, in his petulant voice. To which I laughed; then again, there’s only about fifteen years, between the two men!

...and, in the mood to travel

16:29 Jul 07 2011
Times Read: 969

Before I went out to enjoy some cooling air on a blue-sky Thursday and, pick up my Father’s Meds, the phone rang, twice. The first time it was the company that’s going to ‘help find me a job’ with an appointment for me, the second was from the physiotherapist, to see if I was happy to wait till Wednesday, till she’d had a word with my doctor about the x-ray results, or see her, as arranged, on Monday. As I’m apprehensive about the whole thing, I said “I’ll go with the latter. I trust you.” Now, I don’t trust easy, but I am getting straight answers from her, so… seemed fair enough. Thing was, on my return, my spine was burning, where the swelling is, so I definitely limped on the return, just as I’d jokingly said to Dad on the way out, “Just taking it for a limp.” Instead of resting before the project, I did some gardening, which did nothing for the pain, except… I felt relaxed and, in the mood to travel to voluntary work.

I left the hospital very frustrated: the X-Ray wasn’t ready; and after follow-up by the physio, she was told ‘tomorrow’, which meant waiting a week, which I couldn’t handle. I endred up with an appointment for Monday…

‘HitchHiker’, amongst other things...

11:43 Jul 06 2011
Times Read: 978

Got home to Neil Oliver showing me and my Father Anglesey which I knew well, then he went round the Wirral coastline on the eponymous tv show. And, it was surreal: he’d visited Parkgate and showed it when the marshland floods and the dee is running as a river again; with wildlife running amok as it sought to survive and, often prove a meal for predators like the kestrel.

It had been an oppressive evening when my friend had called, “I have something for you.” And, he had: He always does as he says. This time I walked away with ‘Drive Angry’, which I’d wanted to see for ages. I also acquired ‘HitchHiker’, amongst other things. It looks suitably surreal and good. My friends one of the few, who’s taste in the obscure is as strong as mine. Heck, he introduced me to ‘Annoying Orange. And, it is!

Angelus the Guinea-Pig!

00:53 Jul 05 2011
Times Read: 981

After the housework on Monday morning I went to see my advisor at the dole. On the way across to the grass to the jobcentre I saw a rabbit, a grey fluffy juvenile rabbit, just sitting by a bush. So I went to get my camera out of my buttoned down left hand jacket pocket and, didn’t get the button undone and the camera turned on in time. As it was, after the appointment, I had wished the rabbit had taken me down a hole, to meet Alice. Anyway, Clair, my advisor had told me I was told that I’m to find that I’m to be her ‘guinea-pig’, with regards to the ‘new’ Work Programme. This is a private scheme, run by ‘providers’ like the one involved in my programme, “Ingeus or one of its partners” sponsored by the government, while they’re closing befit agencies and offering redundancy to many of their staff.

Needless to say, I don’t like the idea of people making money from my unemployment, but the letter of introduction the the programme offers no choice as to whether you attend or not, saying: ‘If you fail to take part in the Work Programme without a good reason, your Jobseeker’s Allowance could stop for up to 26 weeks. You could also lose your National Insurance Credits.’

To my knowledge, they cannot legally take my National Insurance Credits, as I paid them, while working. Either way, I’ve got the letter and, I will attend. Well, its either that, or suffer from their threats.

When I got home I was really quite stressed by the whole thing, so went into the back garden to weed and cut and trim, getting reminded that by my Father at one point that I should be wearing a top, or something, due to the sun.

I spent much of Saturday evening working on the ebook and, although I gottit sussed for a piece with contents page, when I had added the cover, the pagination in .pdf format was really well off. runaround night.

01:40 Jul 01 2011
Times Read: 888

Come Thursday morning I phoned the dole, to find out how the civil servants strike would affect me. “Do you do temporary work?” The young lady who’d answered the phone had asked me. “No,” I’d replied. “Then you don’t have to come in. Your payment will go out automatically. Well that said, there was still the housework to do and then, the front border, after a cup of tea for Dad. So, I went to find him, only to find the bugger, out with the shears on the top of the back hedge, the one where the neighbours have been unhelpful, over the last thirty odd years or so. “You going to get the other shears and start over there?” He asked. So I changed quickly and joined him. And boy was it bright and warm. Very soon, my jacket was off, then the shirt was loose and I’ll swear, if he’d started on another side of the hedge, the shirt would have been off, it was that warm. Well, having watered myself, once we’d finished I went back out, to do as I’d intended, plus some weeding, where needed. nd, I do like the two types of green to the leaf fuscia on the left, as I look out the living-room window and, Dad did want me to remove its progeny from next to the garage, So, I moved a Marigold and, in went the second fuscia and, as I moved the fuscia, I found a third… just kind of, there, as it were; so that went into the larger triangle in the back. Then I began to water, my cuttings and where I’d transplanted. After that I had chance for some VR time, before travelling to the project. It’d been a proper runaround night, with two volunteers down from the other week and, thankfully, not as many at the door as the previous week. And, I had no company to the station from the church. And, I missed that. In facgt, I felt rather… lonely. I think it was just all the young people out enjoying themselves, many of them couples. Except, the feeling started just before I left the church… Maybe, I need to rest? It had been a runaround night.
