The historic St Mary’s Church, which inspired Bram Stoker when he was writing Dracula, now faces a horrible fate of its own. Human bones from old graves have been washed out by heavy rains and landslides, threatening its future. Residents in Whitby, North Yorkshire, fear the unstable hillside it stands on could collapse, flattening their homes.

When I was five, or so… I had a full-size Dalek of my own; built by my Dad, a master carpenter, joiner and model-maker. He had used plans he either drew up, or acquired, perhaps from the Radi Times. Either way, it looked like a proper early BBC Dalek. We still have 8mm film of my cousin going up and down the sidewalk in it, in the rain. She was out there for hours, I was told.

Shortly after the catastrophic events of 2008 my governments, like my own, have initiated programmes of austerity. Yet, while many people suffer, the super-rich have got richer, while few if any of those responsible have not only got away with the mess they created and, in fact they get bonuses, paid for by us, the taxpayer. . And, for a short while I worry about this. Then I look back to the boobtube and the television show, ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ and, like the rest of the sheep, I no longer care…
