Again Tobias slapped Jason’s left shoulder, increasing his annoyance.
“She’s got lots of number’s; but I’ve named her The Forest, as that’s what she’s become part of it…” He told the young man, voice almost wistful: “And now… she’s yours, as a replacement, for what you arrived in… Heck…” he pronounced finally, “It has to be better than that!”
Epilogue:
James killed the ships thrusters, allowing her to drift, then turned to his son sitting to his right; “You alright, my boy?”
Although time had passed while in The Void and Jason was now full-grown, he was still, ‘my boy’ and, James liked that.
“I’m alright,” he answered, the words bitten out.
“Which suggests I was right, there is something wrong,” Jason persisted.
“It’s just… I’ll miss her… you know?” His son told him.
James didn’t know: there’d been three in his relationship.
“No,” he admitted.
“Well, it hurts… knowing she’s there and I’m getting further and further from her, every minute…”
Having no words to ease his son’s pain, James listened to him speak of his love and, the loss he felt…
Having listened to his son’s plaintive lament, James mind drifted back to an earlier time back on Earth. James had lived with his Nin, a small but strong woman, who’d taught him much.
He recalled how one evening he’d returned home after a dance, after being dumped et again. Very soon he had sat with a hot toddy to warm him that dark night, as his Nin had tucked him into the warmth of her embrace.
“Don’t worry James,” she had comforted, with soft voice and a caress of her gnarled hand, “after all, there’s plenty of fish in the sea…”
‘Somehow that seems inappropriate advice, in the circumstances,’ he mused.
Then after a long period of time passed, silence followed, which James broke with a grin, “I don’t bet and never have. But if I did, I figure it’d be a safe bet to assume that you’ll not miss Tobias and, his ever-so friendly pats on the back?”
Jason blushed, then staring ahead into the emptiness of space then told his Father quietly, “I don’t know what you mean…”
“Uh-huh,” James muttered and, then grinned.
“Sure son,” he told Jason, “I believe you although there are many who wouldn’t…”
