I could sense the sun setting outside. For a split second, I envisioned its multi-hued brilliance lighting the horizon.
Tap tap, tap tap... my fingers drumming my thigh in time with my heartbeat, which strangely had synchronized to the music playing softly in the background.
I felt the rush of excitement coming over me once again. My ears lit up as blood rushed to them... the tips growing warm.
'Tonight I am free' I thought.
The next hour is a blur as I busy myself with getting ready. I cant recall where the song came from, but I find myself humming a catchy little tune. 'By his leave! Solomon where are we now? By his leave! He asked for breed, you give him stone!'
Another hour passes and I am not hurrying in the slightest. The ones I seek do not come out early anyway. No, they would be fashionably late; though not because they're obsessed with fashion. They would come out late because that is what they do. Time is not important to them in any way.
A brief glow of jealousy passes through me, leaving my fingers to alternate flexing and relaxing.
Glancing around, I come to a stop. Listening to the night sounds. Traffic a street over seems to have ground to a halt, with people desperately jockeying for position, cursing one another, only to slam on their brakes as the car in front of them stops.
Smiling, I continue up the side street I’m on. Notably, its not very well lit, nor occupied. Which I'm thankful for. I reflect 'This is the calm before the storm', and give a brief grin as I lengthen out my stride.
Ahead in the distance I see a couple walking arm in arm in the same direction. Its interesting to realize they're a new couple, as they converse and cast the straight necked, arms length, looks at one another which say 'you've shocked me yet again!'.
I shadow them for a block or two, when finally they turn off down another side street towards one of the trendier establishments. Normally I would have followed them to find out if my guess about their history was accurate or not, but I see the flickering lights of my alter up ahead.
Slowing down my pace, I light up a cigarette and take to hiking a foot against the wall. I can hear the bass of the music pumping out of the club as though it were a living thing, and I feel my heartbeat speed up to match it.
A group of young folks walk past me, laughing and carrying on. I felt a momentary sadness for them as they passed. They would die one day, and the joy of tonight wouldn’t even be a glimmer in their minds eye when their lives pass. They would be lucky to remember this YEAR let alone tonight, considering how high they obviously were on various substances.
'Ohh how I hate to remember! For that means the day has passed... Maybe they have it right after all...' Shaking my head, I toss out my cigarette and head up to the doorman. We both nod our greetings as he shuffles to the side, granting me entrance.
Walking into the dim, smoke filled entrance hall, I turn towards the booths overlooking the dance floor and select one up against the wall with a view of the whole place. Ordering a beverage from the waiter, I lean back in my seat seeking a comfortable perch from which to watch the nights events unfold.
I inclined my head towards the waiter when he returned, half in a daze by reminiscing. I was running over memories of the first time I felt the energy here. Comparing them to recent memories, trying to find the exact feeling I was seeking tonight; and came to the conclusion that once again, I would only know 'it' when I found it. 'Whatever 'it' was' I grinned into my mug as I lifted it to my lips. 'Ahh yes' I thought 'an interesting night indeed!'
