The Dacians

Wolf, wolves... This is a notion that it is to be found in the Thracian dictionary. The name of the wolf it is not documented in Dacian or Thracian language, but it could be concluded. In the history of the Thracians from the north of the Danube, meaning Dacians and Gethians, the wolf took an important role. Any history of the romanian people describes the Dacians`s flag, which had a wolf`s head and a dragon`s tail, and when the wind blown, it produced a sound that scared the enemy`s armies.

The Dacian flag remains extremly important by the semnifications implied. Nicolae Iorga, one of romanian`s greatest historians, told that "the snake, the dragon from the Dacian flag, it is not only an animalic symbol, but the very essence of the ancestors`s religion!". In other words, the Dacian flag had a spiritual semnification and, as is understood for the dragon, it is also understood for the wolf. In his essay "From Zalmoxis to Gengis-Han", Mircea Eliade proposes an interpretation of this symbol under the title "The Dacians and The Wolves".

The Dacian Flag

His interpretation originates from the name "daoi" given to the Dacians by Strabon, and from the noun "daos", which in frigian means "wolf", the result - "Daoi" means "wolves". The stem of the word would be "dhau" - meaning to push, to grip, to strangle, from which derives the ilirican word "dhaunos" - meaning "wolf", the god Daunus or another god, Thracian, the god of war Kandaon or the lydian Kamdaules. Mircea Eliade chooses his examples from the only linguistic area related with the Thracians and the Dacians, the city Daousdava, from Moesia Inferior, between the Danube and the Balcans, meaning "The City of Wolves". A scytic kindred which haunted on the eastern side of the Caspic Sea was called "daoi" - the latins called it "Dahae" and the greeks "Daai", very probably from the iranian stem "dahae" - meaning "wolf". Southern of the Caspic Sea it was Hyrcania, in Eastern iranian "Vehrkana", western iranian "Varkana", from the stem "Vehrka" - meaning "wolf". All this names ment "The Wolves Country".

The same population was called in Arcadia "lycaons", as the state was "Lycaonia" or "Lucaonia" in Asia Minor. The spartan description of "Laconia" derives from the same stem. In Arcadia there was a God Lycaion, as there was an "Apollon The Lycagenet"; "lyca" corresponds to "wolf", and Apollo is the one born by the wolf. The examples given by Mircea Eliade are numerous and they can be multiplied. The demonstration is made by the anthropologic view of the races that beare the name of an animal, in our case, the wolf. The explanation of the presence of a wolf`s head on the Dacian flag must be found here. More complex is the ritual of initiation of the "young wolves", meaning the youngsters organised in manly closed organisations, which purpose is to make them pass those exams which made them looked like the breed they took as a symbol. Usually, the one who wants to borrows until identification the qualities of the beast, is the hunter. Killing the beast and wearing its skin, he becomes the god-animal; the breeder is the prototype of the warrior.

An iteresting fact is that "dances of the wolves" were played by certain tribes before the battles; in the view of Mircea Eliade, the Dacians are a warrior brotherhood, who had the wolf as a symbol. The difficulty would be that of difference in names: the Dacians (or "the wolves") are the Thracians situated in the northern part of the Danube, while the Thracians from the east are the Gaetes; are those Thracians wolves also? The examples given by the Orient, especially Hercynia, could give an affirmative answer. But there are other examples; for instance, the Persians had a flag with a wolf on it; in Turkestan it is still kept the image of a flag composed by a wolf`s head and a dragon; in the north-west of Iran and Armenia, the elite troops wore symbols of dragons. The same flags appeared in the roman army also; given the fact that the army was constituted fom easthern ethnic elements, this fact is not so surprising. What it is to remember is the high frequency of the symbol of the wolf at Thracians, Iranians, Germans. The german folklore also describes the custop of wearing the animal`s skin (the wolf or the bear), as the high frequency of the name "Wolf-Wulf" (the christian apostle of the goths was Wulfila).

I am sure most of you have heard about Zeus, Jupiter, Venus, Geea, Hera, Demeter, Anubis, Amon, St. George, immortals... as you may also heard about egyptians, romans, greeks...

But I believe that few people have ever heard of Thracians, or Zamolxis or Gebeleizis, Bendis...

Who are they? And what is their connection with all the Gods and civilisations mentioned above?

If you have a little patience, I`ll explain in the next minutes.

The well known Greek historian, Herodotus, used to say the following about Thracians: "...after the Indians, the Thracian people constituted the largest ethnicity among all the rest of the world's races. Should they benefit from one ruling only and be spiritually united, they might acceed to become, in my opinion, absolutely undefeatable and to surpass, by far, the greatness of all the other Earth's proud races...".

To see how extended the thracian race used to be, Herodotus mentioned 19 tribes, while other historians mentioned 22!

The Thracian race was great throughout all the Antiquity, and famed because of their physical resistance and their overall skills regarding traditional medicine. A proof of the latter would be to quote Socrates, the great Greek philosopher, who was once confessing to have personally learned, straight from one of Zamolxis's apprentices, an incantation of those "ABLE TO MAKE HUMAN BEINGS IMMORTALS".

But about Zamolxis (or Zalmoxis) we`ll talk in another post. Now we`ll focus on some of the main divinities, which surprisingly remained the same at all tribes, despite their spread over a huge area of the european continent.

Gebeleizis, or Nebeleizis, was the Thracians's Supreme Divinity, lightning constituting only one of the "weapons" that he was said to have used. He was represented through the shape of a handsome sculptural male, occasionally wearing a beard. Gebeleizis provoked thunder and lightning. In some representations, he appears seated on a majestic throne, while in others on horseback, holding an arch in his left hand. A snake is seen coming down versus the horse's head. He is also accompanied, at times, by a one horned vulture. The vulture holds a fish in its beak symbolizing the named Divinity by itself, and also has a rabbit entrapped within its claws. This God embodies the Absolute Master upon Heaven and Earth, the Patron of military aristocracy. He might possess, though, some Uranian- Solar attributes. The Supreme God, the Great God Gebeleizis is also known under the nicknames of Derzelas, Derzis or the Thracian Knight (others consider "THE THRACIAN KNIGHT"as being a later apparition of some Hero, and not of a God). Other times, the God shows up in the hypostasis of a warrior horseman, accompanied by a faithful hound. He holds a spear as an insignia of power, which is ready to be thrown upon a wild boar from the horse's gallop. When not being shown under a warrior or hunter's appearance, he appears as a peaceful horseman, carrying either a torch or a cornu copia. Sometimes, he is presented as having three heads (Tricephalus), alike the accompanying hound, while other times as a blessing God, having his right hand's first three fingers risen or opened, the rest being tightened towards the upper palm.

We shall also encounter him later throughout the Antique world, at the Macedonians -"Macedonian Horseman", while Greek Mythology would similarly carry him under the supreme name of...Zeus!

From Thracia, Gebeleizis's cult had spread to penetrate inside Asia Minor during 7th century B.C., where it was promptly assimilated by Armenians up to becoming their National Divinity, namely Vahagn or the God of War, most famous for his courage in slaying dragons. Vahagn was associated with lightning and thunder, being represented like an imposing man with hair and beard carved out of flames, while "his eyes were scintillating like two Suns". Ultimately, Gebeleizis or "The Thracian Knight", who is to be found in other people's Mythologies as Zeus or Vahagn, has been logically assimilated by Christian nations to become... Saint George (or Gheorghe) killing the Dragon!

The God Gebeleizis

The Supreme male Divinity of Geto-Dacians Gebeleizis also goes by having a feminine alter ego, a double named Bendis, the Great Goddess. Ancient representations, recently discovered, show her to our eyes through the face of a full figured woman, with prominent cheek bones and curly hair either plaited into two tresses or spliced into two big curls surrounding her lovely looks.

The Great Goddess Bendis was mostly adored by Thracian women, for she was embodying the Goddess of Moon, Forests and... Magical charms!

The Goddess Bendis

Besides the Supreme God Gebeleizis and the Great Goddess Bendis, Thracians have also had a Divinity of Flames and Fireplace and Guardian of the House, respectively the Goddess Vesta (or Hestia, Histia), to the veneration of whom Thracian houses were built strictly in a rectangular form with stoned or wooden walls.

The Goddess Vesta

At the South of Danube River, Thracian civilization living around the area used to celebrate as well Dionysus, the Grape-Vine Divinity, Patron of the well known dizzying liquor, whose cult has again been taken over "en passant" by the Greeks who, by this time, were fair spirited enough in reminding the World that, shortly before Dionysus' coming back home in Thracia, he had initiated himself on Phrygian mysteries at the insistences of His grandmother! Besides the grape-vine, the ivy counted as well among this God's favorite plants.

The God Dionysus

Opposite to the Grape-Vine God's wanton celebration, lasting through centuries was the cult of The Thracian Priest, a relevant symbol for the beautiful, future life's acceptation, which was to be dedicated as well to human beings as to all other creatures' welfare. Thus, "THE SPHINX", a giant megalithic rock standing alone on the Bucegi Mountains' upper platform and having this peculiar shape, was representing, to all Getae people, no less than the solaced "NIGHT MASTER", an entity later acquired by the same ancient Greeks as ORPHEUS. On another hand, every ancient author has written that "the Orphical Mysteries" were indeed celebrated during night time. However, due to their esotherism, Getae Thracian Religion's elevated concepts were only acquainted to the Great Priests surrounded by a few initiated elite members. The Greek and Roman writers couldn't have left too much information about it, while being totally denied access within the Zamolxian mysteries.

I think I can`t take it anymore

21:19 Mar 29 2006
Times Read: 914

For the last three days, everything went wrong! I couldn`t sleep two nights in a row, succedeing in accumulating almost three days and only three hours of sleep...

This thing wouldn`t be so bad if I was in vacation or something...But I have to go to work in the morning, suck up to the nurses...this is really hard! In the last two weeks, when I realised that I am working almost for nothing, I slowed down the level of work, and the nurses began to act like they own me and I have to do as they say or else I`m in truble...

I have such a bad state of mind that I don`t really care anymore what is happening to me or to the world... But I feel ashamed that I cannot put my best efforts into Vampire Rave, the only place I can call home now, the only place where I can find my peace...and where I found some great persons, that I cannot thank them enough just for recognising my existance!

I am still drinking...why? I know that is not me but I cannot stop it...

Lately, I don`t feel quite myself...and, for some reason, my job became a huge problem for me...and I`m thinking about quitting it...

But that is not all...I cannot sleep at all, even with sleeping pills!

And, I am a little ashamed of myself, I think I drink too much lately...but I hope that is just only a phase that will pass in the next few days.

Falling apart

21:47 Mar 27 2006
Times Read: 924

For the last three weeks I wasn`t myself; everything I`ve planned failed in the very next day...everything I wanted was forbidden in the very next day; I feel unsecure, unwanted, crushed in humiliation and disgrace...

At work I cannot keep up with the tasks, I`m more and more tired, but I cannot sleep at home...at home trouble awaits every single day...My fiancee and I had a long and unproductive talk, and to keep the wedding in plan I had to give up some of my principles, as usual...

I`ve seen a psychiatrist... he gave a sort of treatment but I`m still waiting to have an effect... I was hopeing more to resolve things through discussion...but that was another crushed illusion!

My only relief is here, on Vampire Rave! I love it here! But, sometimes, I feel like all my work here (I`m not saying that is very much but...) is useless...unapreciated... and that makes me feel even worse...

Help!!!!!

I was talking with her the other day, and I was telling her that she is a succubus and put a spell on her boyfriend, when she tells me that no, she is so sweet and that her boyfriend considers her a candy...my reply was:"Then why doesn`t he put you on a stick and lick you?"...I realised what I said few seconds later...She didn`t hear me, but my good friend Sithwarrior did, and we laughed all day long about this...

Hope didn`t offend anybody!

Funny question

A few days ago I was talking to one of my colleagues, and at some point we discussed about lips (I was talking about Angelina Jolie`s lips...goooood!!!!), and she asked with innocence(?):" What are a woman`s lips good for?"

So, I ask you: what are they good for?

I should mention that I laughed all day long thinking about that question.
