Seventeen skeletons were recently discovered in Poland, buried in what is being called a vampire cemetery. The skulls had been removed and intentionally placed between the hands or knees of the dead body.on.aol.com
A vampire cemetery found in Poland offers a chilling look at how suspected vampires were interred during the 15th and 16th centuries,
according to a July 28 ABC News report.
In all, 17 bodies were found by construction workers near the town of Gliwice.
The skeletons were buried with their heads severed and placed between their knees
with stones placed on the skulls.
In addition, strangely, there was no clothing, jewelry, or even buttons found
with the buried bodies.
It seems that this vampire cemetery hails from a time when
the entire region was worried about vampires,
so anybody suspected as a vampire would be buried in this manner
to keep them from coming back to life.
According to chief archeologist, Jacek Pierzak,
"It was one of the most common forms of burying vampires."
People must have been quite scared to do this to other people.
This vampire cemetery was most likely located close to the execution site as well.
Researchers plan to conduct tests on the skeletons to determine
a cause of death and their exact age.
Due to the vampire cemetery's proximity to a former execution site,
it is probable that these people were executed as suspected vampires.
These vampire stories are a far cry from the likes of "Twilight"
or even "True Blood." Several centuries ago,
vampires were treated as incredibly dangerous beings.
