I\'ve loved Carmilla since I first read it when I was sixteen, and I agree with you that it\'s strength is in it\'s rich atmosphericness.
I note this article was written in 2012. It\'s now 2016, and I\'ve just bought a movie on DVD called Angel Of Darkness, and, while I\'ve not watched this yet, the blurb on the cover makes it definitely sound as if it\'s based on Carmilla, as a version set in contemporary or more contemporary times. In it a car accident takes the place of a horses-drawn carriage accident, and the name Lara is a slight twist on Laura, and, it sounds as if local villagers - as they are concerned about the two girls relationship, in the light of local lore and tales concerned with vampires, witchcraft and superstitions - feature more than in the original tale. I hope to watch it tonight.
I rather liked the movie version which starred Meg Tilly as Carmilla, and was set in roughly similar times but in a plantation in the deep south. Somehow it lost something for me though, in not being set in the German forest. The atmosphere of the German forest seemed more creepy and sinister to me.
