Hmm - Continuation from Last Months Entry

I am seriously considering throwing this laptop in the trash! I am so frustrated with it, as it is still deleting words, misplacing letters and the freeking cursor has a mind of it's own. It takes me twice as long writing reports, and if I make a mistake I get the whole damn thing back in my lap to do again. I got two reports back today. I could cry with the frustration of it all.

Sometimes I stick a post-it over the mousepad and that helps to a degree.. but damn, I still have to spend twice/thrice times checking my work. This mega sucks!

Well, to be honest I never stopped to think about the method they use to kill animals for human market before this, as I always assumed they did it humanely???..?.. I just did a little research on the subject, and came up with this.. I swear I want to believe it is all bullshit too! this sort of thing just makes me feel bad, or am I dancing my heartstrings to their fiddle?

Two Kinds of Stunning

Most animals in Britain are stunned. Bailhere's Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary (1988) defines it as "producing unconsciousness of head in carbon dioxide, gas, electrical shock ... all of them aiming to allow the animal to bleed out while it is still alive. An animal that is dead before it has bled out will be unsuitable for marketing." The latter definition regards stunning as rendering an animal unconscious, and the exsanguination as the cause of death. However, the Oxford English Dictionary (1989) says that the aim of stunning is "to deprive of consciousness or power of motion [my italics] by a blow, a fall or the like." The author of this entry gives paralysis as an alternative to loss of consciousness.

The captive bolt may penetrate the skull and destroy brain tissue, or cause a considerable rise in intracranial pressure. These result in instantaneous loss of consciousness (as a knock-out does in boxing), followed by collapse of the animal. If the brain tissue is not destroyed, the animal may come round, if the carotid arteries and jugular veins are not cut soon ("sticking"). Instant unconsciousness occurs if the aim is accurate, the animal is still, and the device works. Electrical stunning involves passing a large voltage across the animal's brain. Slaughtermen, butchers, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals, Compassion in World Farming and most people who eat meat, assume that the electric current causes instantaneous unconsciousness, so that the animals feel no pain. Unfortunately, there is evidence that this assumption may not be warranted.

The vast majority of animals are killed humanly these peta assholes latch on to the one or two places that do not come up to scratch and they try and claim all places are like this.

I used to live near a slaughter house and the animals were always well looked after. If they had a long drive to the slaughter house they were allowed to wander around a field for a while before the main event. If the company didn't care about animal welfare they would just kill them the second they left the truck.

There is always somebody who will do anything for profit! Whatever you find incredulous is probably quite true. I know here that the live sheep export to the middle east is inhumane. One day I am sure the animals will get their day in court and show how cruel we are.

We have evolved the tool's and digestion to eat meat, we need to eat meat, even die hard veggie's have to supplement the proteins and such that they lose out on from not eating meat.

I agree the way the animals are treated is not right and hell, some of the people who work their and get off on it sux.

BUT the ENTIRE way of diet has changed over the last hundred years and will do so again in the future.

A part of my life which I rarely talk about on this gothic interface is the Charity Work that I do. I am person that likes to give, not only finances but giving in the way of support, help and advise. Sometimes it is difficult and there is no answer to find when someone approaches me with the known fact that they are dying. I find that hard and never quite know what to do or say in that instance. .. All I can do is to listen, and sometimes I feel that is quite inadequate...

Cyclone in Burma

23:03 May 05 2008
Times Read: 1,766

This is a dreadful thing which has happened, and it is inconceivable that so many people have lost their lives in the recent Burmese cyclone. So sad, and here we are sitting fretting and chit-chatting about matters that are so inconsquential, compared to what the families and relatives of the dead in this disaster must be thinking right now. Here is the latest news from the Irish Times..

Last Updated: 05/05/2008 21:08

Up to 10,000 feared dead in Burma cyclone

Around 10,000 people have died in the cyclone that ripped through the Irrawaddy delta in Burma on Saturday. The scale of the disaster has drawn a rare acceptance of outside help from the diplomatically isolated military generals who rule the country.

Buddhist monks clear up roads damaged by the cyclone in Rangoon

The official toll stands at 3,394 dead and 2,879 missing, although those figures only cover two of the five declared disaster zones, where U.N. officials say hundreds of thousands are without shelter or drinking water.

Earlier official reports put the death toll at 351 but the number of casualties had been expected to rise as authorities made contact with hard-hit islands and villages in the Irrawaddy delta, the country's rice bowl.

Food and fuel prices soared in the former capital Rangoon today as aid agencies scrambled to deliver emergency supplies and assess the damage from Cyclone Nargis after it slammed into the delta region.

The military, which has ruled for 46 years and is shunned by the West, initially refrained from appealing for help after the Category 3 Cyclone Nargis featuring winds of 190 kph hit on Saturday. However, earlier today it gave the United Nations permission to send emergency aid to help the hundreds of thousands of victims of the cyclone.

In Rangoon, many roofs were ripped off even sturdy buildings in the cyclone, suggesting damage would be severe in the shanty towns that lie on the outskirts of the city of five million people.

Michael Annear, regional disaster chief for the International Red Cross, said emergency supplies were being handed out from stockpiles in Burma, but more was needed.

The UN office in Yangon said there was an urgent need for plastic sheeting, water purification tablets, cooking equipment, mosquito nets, health kits and food.

It said the situation outside Yangon was "critical, with shelter and safe water being the principal immediate needs."

Some 90,000 people were homeless on the island of Haingyi, around 200 km southwest of Yangon on the fringe of the delta.

The World Food Programme said it has stocks of around 500,000 tonnes in Rangoon and hoped to bring in more food.

"It's clear that this is a major disaster," Richard Horsey, of the United Nations disaster response office in Bangkok said after an emergency aid meeting.

"How many people are affected? We know that it's in the six figures. We know that it's several hundred thousand needing shelter and clean drinking water, but how many hundred thousand we just don't know," he said.

It is not known whether Burma, the world's largest rice exporter when it won independence from Britain in 1948, will need to import emergency rice supplies

Bunkered down in its new capital, Naypyidaw, the Junta said Nargis has not derailed a May 10th referendum on a new army-drafted constitution.

Minister of State for Overseas Development, Michael Kitt announced today that the Irish Government has pledged €1million for disaster relief and said that Ireland was willing to offer further assistance.

“I have asked my officials to stay in close contact with the UN, the International Red Cross and the NGO community to monitor the situation as it evolves. In particular, it is urgent at this point that we get a thorough assessment of the scale of this disaster in order that the appropriate response can be made available as quickly as possible," said Mr Kitt.

Unfortunately, its not the majority of the country that wouldn't take the help but the military junta, that may either refuse it, or take it and misappropriate it. This is the region that not so long ago were beating monks, of all people, and shut out international news crews. It's very sad. I fully expect that the actual death numbers are not even accurate. I assume they are higher.

Ice-Cream is the order on the menu today :) It is a beautiful day here in Ireland and the birds' song reflects the happiness that is in my heart. The omens are good for the days ahead at work, and it is all melting together nicely for a successful business venture :) I am pleased about that.

As Chairperson, for one of our local bigger charities.. I get to deliver a speech at this evenings May Day celebrations, I don't relish that too much as I am not one that enjoys the limelight a lot. Of course that speech has been left to the last moment, but I have been working on it, on and off all day!

Later, we have a barby going on for some friends that are coming over... I have had a few suggestions what to roast, but I think that may only cause indigestion.

Well, luv.. and keep yourselves out of trouble darlings! xxx See ya Later :)
