Peter waited a while before he made his decent on the small house. He waited until he saw Collin leave in his truck. He hoped there was no one else in the house. He had to get to the bottom of this, whatever this was.
Once he got over the picket fence, something occurred to him. He hadn’t heard anyone’s thoughts. And why hadn’t he popped over to the porch instead of walk? Had he lost his instincts too? He decided then that it wasn’t important enough to think about at the time and continued up the steps
He knocked on the screen door. Jor Dee appeared and gasped, walking backwards until she hit the wall. “W-w-what are you? Who are you?”
Peter was confused. He opened the door. “What do you mean who am I? I’m Peter Smith. I’m your husband.” He went to put his hand on her cheek, but she slapped it away.
“No, you can’t be Peter. Peter died a long time ago.”
Peter was stunned. Did he hear what he thought he heard? “What?”
Jor Dee regained her composer and put her hand on her hip. “You heard me. I didn’t stutter.”
Peter smiled awkwardly but returned to a frown. “What on earth do you mean he died? I mean, here I stand, live and well! I am not dead!” He almost felt like screaming, but he so badly wanted to keep his head on straight for the love of his life.
“I mean what I say. You, or whoever you claim to be, have been dead for six years.”
“Six years?”
Jor Dee rolled her eyes and sighed, “Come in, Peter.”
Peter took half a step into the house, but stopped short. “Do you believe me? Do you believe that I am Peter?”
Jor Dee grunted. “What do you think I should believe?”
“Ha! Who am I to tell you what to believe? I can't. That's your choice. You and I both know that. Besides, if I told you to ride a horse through a mine field, would you question me?”
“Well of course I would. How old are these said mines?”
“Details are unimportant. Would you believe me if I told you there were no mines?”
“If there are no mines in a mine field, then it’s just a field is it not?” Jor Dee and Peter exchanged smiles. “You are my Peter.” Jor Dee reached up with her hand till it was almost touching him, but not quite, before removing. “I fear if I touch you, you’ll evaporate like you did so many times before when I was younger. When it first happened, I dreamed so much of you coming to me as you have now. Standing here in your,” she paused and looked at his outfit, “a tux? Ok, so the tux was never something I thought you would show up in. But I’d rather see you in this than nothing at all.”
“Yes, I’d rather you see me clothed…for now.” Peter smiled wickedly.
Jor Dee rolled her eyes. “I believe my husband,” she waved her right hand in front of his face, “might have issues with that idea.”
“Am I…am I in a parallel universe or something? You and I…are married where I come from.” Peter grabbed her ringed hand and twisted the ring. It was pretty, but smaller than the one he gave her in his world.
“Are we?” Jor Dee peered around Peter’s shoulder. Peter turned around to see what it was she looked at or for. Someone was driving by in a small green car very slowly but sped away when they saw the two looking at it.
Peter looked back to Jor Dee. Jor Dee was looking at her feet. Peter followed her gaze. She was twisting her bare toes against the hardwood floor.
Peter wanted to know what this was all about. Who was in the car? Why did the sight of the car cause Jor Dee so much pain? But how to bring it up was the key to the entire plotting scheme.
“Want me to come in now?” Peter asked.
Jor Dee happily let Peter inside her home. She was so pleased to see his bright, warm face again. It had been six years and he looked the same as he had back then. But how could that be? Even his dark, dark eyes were the same if not darker.
Was he going to expect her to drop her life and be with him? She couldn’t do that. She was married now. He died after all. He left her. So no, she was going to stay with Collin.
Peter walked slowly down the hall toward Jor Dee’s kitchen. He took his time, looking at all the pictures. There were pictures of Collin and Jor Dee laughing alongside a river with fishing poles in their hands. There was a picture of a very happy Jor Dee in a white wedding dress with Collin’s hands wrapped around hers. It made him feel sick to see this.
