I spent a few days in Savannah, GA and at the beach. It was the first time I had been there in a decade and I had an absolutely wonderful time. It was also nice to squeeze the last bit of warmth out of the year before returning home to nights in the 40s.
I was also able to visit Fort Pulaski for the first time, despite it being just a few miles away from Savannah (as a kid we used to go down there every year, but never got to see the fort). It was built in the 1840s and guarded the Savannah River. Despite being relatively small, it was a great example of the fortifications of the day and was state of the art for the time. What I found interesting was the fact that the events of Fort Pulaski in the Civil War mirrored the titanic shift in warfare that swept the globe around that time.
At the start of the war the fort was basically impregnable, but as technology advanced by 1863 the fort (and by extension all stone fortifications the world over) became wholly obsolete. Seeing the damaged walls of Fort Pulaski was impressive, and even sent a shiver down my spine despite being 150 years removed from the battle.
Of course being able to walk around Savannah (and eating at Paula Dean's restaurant) was great. I've always had a fascination with trees and Savannah is full of giant, gnarly, twisted, moss covered beauties.
While at the beach I got a bit of a sunburn which was kind of funny. I'm surprised I didn't get any more burnt than I did, given how pale I am and how much time I spent outside without any sunblock. I found a handful of live sand dollars (which I left on the beach), but not as many as I recall finding as a kid. It's horrible what we've done to our environment simply because we're too selfish. That said, the area was still beautiful, the thousand year old sand dunes still stood, and the Mark 15 nuclear bomb that was lost in the area still hadn't exploded :) (check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1958_Tybee_Island_mid-air_collision)
I had a great time and I hope I can start going back much more often. It's amazing how much the sun and sand can do for a person, both for their physical but also mental & spiritual health.
