Obama, stop smoking that weed boy!

"I think that we've restored America's standing in the world, and that's confirmed by polls."

Um, when did polls actually mean anything?

"But I remain confident that we are going to get this done, and we're going to have a bill that reduces our deficit, bends the cost curve, covers millions of people who don't have health insurance right now and, for people who do have health insurance, makes their insurance more secure."

So you'll do this despite it's $800-1,200 billion cost, forgetting the $1.4 trillion deficit for 2009 alone and ignoring the fact that most Americans don't want this bill.

My question is if of the less than $30 billion of the $787 billion stimulus bill resulted in $6.4 billion spent in non-existent districts how on Earth do they plan to spend the health care money and do it without causing people's deaths?

(Stimulus Partial Update)

Mismanaged funds: $6.4 billion

Bogus districts: 440

False jobs from those: 28,420

Sacramento Bee: The California State University system received $268.5 million in stimulus funds and claimed that the money allowed them to save over 26,000 jobs. But when pressed, the University officials admitted they weren't really going to lay off half their workforce, and that in fact, few or none of these jobs would have been lost without the stimulus. "This is not really a real number of people," a CSU spokesman said. "It's like a budget number."

The New York Times: A $1,000 grant to purchase a single lawn mower [in Arkansas] was credited with saving 50 jobs.

Tacoma News-Tribune: Of the 34,500 jobs allegedly saved or created by the stimulus in Washington State, 24,000 belong to state teachers already under contract to finish out the school year, whose jobs were never in jeopardy.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution: A joint venture [in Oklahoma] that received six military contracts counted the same 10 jobs six times.

Chicago Tribune: [S]timulus funds were said to have saved the equivalent of 382 full-time teaching jobs -- 142 more than the [Dolton, Ill.] district actually has.

Chicago Tribune: The city claimed to have saved the jobs of 473 teachers with its $4.7 million education stimulus grant. The [North Chicago] district employs only 290 teachers.

Greenville News: "The Greenville Housing Authority ‘saved or created’ 118 jobs by use of federal stimulus money, according to the Obama administration. The agency only has 35 employees."

Money is a concept. It is not based on anything anymore, so deficits are valued based on debt, which is retarded thinking IMO. So long as the world economy continues to go down this path, it matters little how much money we are in debt.

This is freaking awesome!!!!!

New HIV gene therapy halts 2 boys' rare brain disease

WASHINGTON – French scientists mixed gene therapy and bone marrow transplants in two boys to seemingly halt a brain disease that can kill by adolescence. The surprise ingredient: They disabled the HIV virus so it couldn't cause AIDS, and then used it to carry in the healthy new gene.

The experiment marks the first time researchers have tried that long-contemplated step in people — and the first effective gene therapy against a severe brain disease, said lead researcher Dr. Patrick Aubourg of the University Paris-Descartes.

Although it's a small, first-step study, it has "exciting implications" for other blood and immune disorders that had been feared beyond gene therapy's reach, said Dr. Kenneth Cornetta, president of the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy.

"This study shows the power of combining gene therapy and cell therapy," added Cornetta, whose own lab at Indiana University has long researched how to safely develop gene delivery using lentiviruses, HIV's family.

The research was published in Friday's edition of the journal Science.

In 20 years of gene therapy research, there have been few home runs and some headline-making setbacks — including a risk of leukemia caused by otherwise successful gene therapy for another rare disorder, "bubble boy disease." That's a risk that specialists hope a lentivirus-based gene therapy will eliminate.

Best known from the movie "Lorenzo's Oil", adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, is a rare genetic disease that, in its most devastating form, destroys the coating of nerve fibers in boys' brains. Without that coating, called myelin, the neurological system breaks down. The disease typically strikes between the ages of four and 10, leading to blindness, deafness, dementia and loss of muscle control, and killing them within a few years.

Bone marrow transplants can halt ALD by letting new myelin-forming stem cells take root. But it's difficult to find a matching marrow donor, and the transplant itself is very risky.

So what if stem cells from the boys' own bone marrow could be genetically corrected, eliminating the ALD mutation? To do that, Aubourg's team had to overcome a technical hurdle: Gene therapy works when scientists harness deliver a healthy new gene by attaching to a virus that can harmlessly infect cells. But none of today's so-called gene therapy "vectors" could penetrate enough of the stem cells needed for an ALD treatment to work.

Unlike most viruses, HIV can penetrate stem cells, and it sticks permanently. So Aubourg's team removed the genetic parts of HIV that make it dangerous, leaving basically a scaffolding to carry the new therapeutic gene.

Then they culled stem cells from two 7-year-old boys in the early stages of ALD, and mixed in the healthy gene. The boys underwent bone marrow-destroying chemotherapy and then had their genetically corrected stem cells reinserted.

Two years later, the boys have shown no sign of worsening brain damage and are functioning well with 15 percent of their blood cells producing the healthy protein, said Aubourg, who plans to test the experimental procedure in more patients. An advocacy group, the Stop ALD Foundation, is working to raise money for a similar U.S. study.

This is one of the most exciting things I've heard of in a very long time. Using viruses as vectors is something that has been studied for years and tends to only be used in certain cancers but now, perhaps, this will open up a whole new range for viral gene therapy. HIV is one of the few viruses that can infect "difficult" cells (stem cells, immune cells etc) with the number needed to bring about a massive result. If this proves to be a long term and relatively safe treatment I'd imagine that it could be used for a number of illnesses.

A Jew and medical doctor, Auschwitz prisoner Miklos Nyiszli - No. A8450 - was spared death for a grimmer fate: working in Auschwitz under the supervision of Dr. Josef Mengele.

Nyiszli survived to give a horrifying account, one of the first books to bring the full horror of the Nazi death camps to the public "Auschwitz: A Doctor's Eyewitness Account". pp. 114-120:

"In number one's crematorium's gas chamber 3,000 dead bodies were piled up. The Sonderkommando had already begun to untangle the lattice of flesh. The noise of the elevators and the sound of their clanging doors reached my room. The work moved ahead double-time. The gas chambers had to be cleared, for the arrival of a new convoy had been announced.

The chief of the gas chamber kommando almost tore the hinges off the door to my room as he arrived out of breath, his eyes wide with fear or surprise.

"Doctor," he said, "come quickly. We just found a girl alive at the bottom of a pile of corpses."

I grabbed my instrument case, which was always ready, and dashed to the gas chamber. Against the wall, near the entrance to the immense room, half covered with other bodies, I saw a girl in the throes of a death rattle, her body seized with convulsions. The gas kommando men around me were in a state of panic. Nothing like this had ever happened in the course of their horrible career.

We moved the still-living body from the corpses pressing against it. I gathered the tiny adolescent body into my arms and carried it back to the room adjoining the gas chamber, where normally the gas kommando men change clothes for work. I laid the body on a bench. A frail young girl, almost a child, she could have been no more than fifteen. I took out my syringe and, taking her arm - she had not yet recovered consciousness and was breathing with difficulty - I administered three intravenous injections.

My companions covered her body which was as cold as ice with a heavy overcoat. One ran to the kitchen to fetch some tea and warm broth. Everybody wanted to help as if she were his own child. The reaction was swift. The child was seized by a fit of coughing which brought up a thick globule of phlegm from her lungs. She opened her eyes and looked fixedly at the ceiling. I kept a close watch for every sign of life. Her breathing became deeper and more and more regular. Her lungs, tortured by the gas, inhaled the fresh air avidly. Her pulse became perceptible, the result of the injections.

I waited impatiently. I saw that within a few minutes she was going to regain consciousness: her circulation began to bring color back into her cheeks, and her delicate face became human again .. I made a sign for my companions to withdraw. I was going to attempt something I knew without saying was doomed to failure.

From our numerous contacts, I had been able to ascertain that Mussfeld had a high esteem for the medical expert's professional qualities. He knew that my superior was Dr. Mengele, the KZ's most dreaded figure, who, goaded by racial pride, took himself to be one of the most important representatives of German medical science. He considered the dispatch of hundreds of thousands of Jews to the gas chambers as a patriotic duty. The work carried out in the dissecting room was for the furtherance of German medical science ...

And this was the man I had to deal with, the man I had to talk into allowing a single life to be spared. I calmly related the terrible case we found ourselves confronted with. I described for his benefit what pains the child must have suffered in the undressing room, and the horrible scenes that preceded death in the gas chamber. When the room had been plunged into darkness, she had breathed in a few lungfuls of cyclon gas. Only a few, though, for her fragile body had given way under the pushing and shoving of the mass as they fought against death. By chance she had fallen with her face against the wet concrete floor. That bit of humidity had kept her from being asphyxiated, for cyclon gas does not react under humid conditions.

These were my arguments, and I asked him to do something for the child. He listened to me attentively then asked me exactly what I proposed doing. I saw by his expression that I had put him face to face with a practically impossible problem.

It was obvious that the child could not remain in the crematorium. One solution would have been to put her in front of the crematorium gate. A kommando of women always worked there. She could have slipped back to the camp barracks after they had finished work. She would never relate what had happened to her. The presence of one new face among so many thousands would never be detected, for no one in the camp knew all the other inmates. If she had been three or four years older that might have worked. A girl of twenty would have been able to understand clearly the miraculous circumstances of her survival, and have enough foresight not to tell anyone about them. She would wait for better times, like so many other thousands were waiting, to recount what she had lived through.

But Mussfeld thought that a young girl of sixteen would in all nai 'vete' tell the first person she had met where she had just come from, what she had seen and what she had lived through. The news would spread like wildfire, and we would all be forced to pay for it with our lives. "There's no way of getting round it," he said, "the child will have to die." Half an hour later the young girl was led, or rather carried, into the furnace room hallway, and there Mussfeld sent another in his place to do the job. A bullet in the back of the neck."

Man is the cruelest creature ever conceived of

From time to time I like to think on the reasons a person either is or becomes a homosexual. Yesterday I had an idea that could at least give some evidence that, for many, being gay is a matter of nature.

A "spit party" is a party where singles meet, test their DNA, have a pheromone scent test and find out if they might be genetically compatible with someone. Of course these parties are usually geared toward the heterosexual community but if there were several made up of gays, we could learn some things.

The genes that are looked at are immune genes. The theory being that if you have a,b,c gene and the other person d,e,f your offspring would be genetically superior. Basically evolution. One way we do this naturally is by scent. We all give off nearly undetectable scents made up of pheromones (the love chemical) and other chemicals. Someone might naturally smell good to me but not to you and when the DNA test is done those who smell nice tend to be people with complementary genes.

My idea is, even though gays don't breed, obviously, our natural urges to, behaviours, genetic make up etc is all very similar to heterosexuals. So, if there were to be a gay spit party and the DNA matches the scent results it *could* give more credence to the idea that most gays were born gay.

Wouldn't it give more enlightening results to do that type of test with a mixed orientation and mixed gender group?

Mix gender, of course. I just use "gay" as a general term for homosexual, male and female. As for mixed orientation, not really. Since we know the results of heterosexual tests mixing it wouldn't really do much. The goal is to single out any differences from what's known (straight ppl) what isn't (gays).

If we were to mix it, in order to prevent fuzzy data on the scent tests based on personal preferences (well he/she's straight, they stink) we would have to make sure no one knew who was gay or straight and then that adds a whole other layer of complexity in the interpretation of data. At least just starting out.
