The latest accepted theory is that initial expansion after The Big Bang was actually slow. If it was a rapid explosion there would not be the uniformity of stars and temperature that we see in space. The temperature difference across all space is only 1/10,000th of a degree celcius. The range and distribution of these temperature variations are explained in Alan Gooths 1980 Theory of Inflation. However, the theory explains how things are now, yet they are still unable to explain why inflation happened. However, it is a common acceptance in Cosmology that the Standard Model of Cosmology is highly flawed, and as Inflation is the Theory that best fits what is seen today, it has in the last 3 decades become a key part in the Standard Model of Cosmology.
The other additions and research in the past three decades are Dark Matter, Dark Energy, and Dark Flow.
