We've all heard about sun spots and anytime we hear the term we imagine big dark spots or holes on the surface of the Sun. But there's a neat fact that most don't know.

A sunspot is a region on the Suns surface where the magnetic fields form "tubes" and the darkest region of the spot is where the tube is vertical (relative to the surface).

Sunspots are temporary lasting a few hours to days and can be just a few miles in diameter to larger than the Earth.

But they aren't actually black. A sunspot is cooler than the surrounding area and so it appears to be darker, and it is darker but not black. If you could take a sunspot and bring it next to the Earth it would actually outshine a full moon.

But if the sunspot was that close to Earth...couldn't do major damage??
