His powerful wings stretched wide,
Beating effortlessly to keep us aloft;
The cool wind that whipped his hair behind him
Let me feel it was feathery soft.
I had no clue as to his name
Or why he had come to my rescue,
But I did know one thing of him:
His intentions were just and true.
The waters benath us rolled white as snow,
And the dolphins followed us, jumping
And playing; they were our guides,
Though the wings of my savior guided us a-thumping.
A stretch of land lay before us,
Its tall mountains of steel and glass glinting
In the morning sunlight of Berlin's fall.
He showed no signs of acknowledging my hinting.
Would he accept my offer of heart?
Could he understand human love?
So many questions flew through my head,
But not as graceful as we glided above.
We landed on the roof of one building,
With crowds gathering beneath our feet;
And with such grace he flew away,
Like a God from the lands of Crete.
I never saw him once again,
But I care no longer to see his face upon my bust,
For he is seen in my memory,
And he will return for me, I trust.
He will slay these men who strangle
Me, and I shall call him: Mein Engel.
