Watched the University of KY basketball game tonight, the team they played were good boys but not in the league of KY as in not division 1 okay. Anyway it was a runaway game most of the way with the end being 88 to 44.
What made this game so amazing was that UK became the first Division 1 team to post 2000 wins!
The whole Rupp arena was filled to the rafters with blue and white, screaming fans, former players, heck even the governor was there rooting them on.
Our team is very young 3 freshmen and a sophmore with one senior but they are playing some really good basketball and are ranked no 3 in the nation right now. I love that we're not number 1 since that always seems a jinx for us anyway.
After the game the current coach spoke a bit then had the son of Adolph Rupp there to speak and he did a nice little talk about the history and tradition of UK then Joe B Hall spoke and chastised Calapari for misleading us all on how fast this young team was coming along. The praise then moved on to include some of the behind the scenes staff that we lost and how important they were to our team.
By the end we all were happy to agree that two very important things happened tonight.
1. the UK tradition of Big Blue basketball is alive and very very healthy and
2. UK crossed that 2000 mark before the University of North Carolina Tarheels! GO Cats!!!
After it was all over my family who were watching the game got to talking about some of our favorite memories of past UK games and we laughed in places till we cried recalling how our Dad was one of their most devoted fans and some of the comments, curses and threats that came out of him during different games!
*It was a real good thing Bobby Knight never came to this part of KY* lol
There are two major college basketball teams here in KY.... University of KY and the University of Louisville and UL has some very devoted fans of their own which can cause some distress around here for instance my neighbors a loving young couple have a license plate on their car that reads "a house divided" on the back one side of the car has a UK Wildcat sticker for her and a UL Cardinal sticker for him! lol
But for most of us living in the hills of Eastern KY there's no team for us but the Wildcats of UK, we love them and I know of folks that hold all their vacation time and extra money to follow the Cats to their away games. Cannot let our boys show up and not have a sea of blue cheering them on. It's such a large group that tv commentators not used to the big blue fans end up talking too much about it and not enough about the game sometimes. lol
Anyway Congratulations to the University of KY on that 2000 th win, long may you play!
