‘Bell, Book’ casts spell on audience
By MARK ARNEST THE GAZETTE
“Bell, Book and Candle” is enchanting.
The Star Bar Players’ smart new production of John Van Druten’s classic romantic comedy hits all the right notes between silliness and tenderness. It’s a great kickoff to the theater company’s new season.
The plot is the old “witch hexes man to fall in love with her; man is really, really upset when he finds out.” (Van Druten’s play was made into a 1958 movie starring Kim Novak and Jimmy Stewart.) But director Mark Hennessy and an excellent five-member cast also bring out the play’s serious undertones, without which the play would drag over its nearly three-hour length.
A major reason for the success of “Bell, Book and Candle” is the presence of Lisa and Chad Siebert, who recently moved to Colorado Springs from Los Angeles.
Lisa Siebert is wonderful in the Hamlet-sized part of Gillian the witch. The witches and warlocks in Van Druten’s play are completely self-centered — “Saints love everyone, with no thoughts for themselves,” Gillian says; “We’re just the opposite” — and Siebert makes a beautifully modulated transition from cool control to a bundle of nerves, unable to hide the new emotions she feels.
Her performance is a lesson in focus. There’s never a moment’s doubt about what’s going on in her mind, even when she’s not the center of attention.
As Gillian’s brother, the warlock Nicky, Chad Siebert is a whirlwind of narcissistic energy. The character thoroughly enjoys his supernatural powers, and Siebert thoroughly enjoys his role.
As Queenie, the play’s other witch, Clemie Cyburt also exudes pleasure with her powers.
The way in which these characters take the supernatural for granted helps bring the audience into their world. When Gillian gives Queenie a scarf, Queenie excitedly asks, “What does it do?” and can’t hide her disappointment when she learns it’s just a scarf.
The human characters aren’t overwhelmed in the supernatural. Jude Bishop gives a terrific comic performance as Shep, the man Gillian chooses to have fall in love with her. He’s especially good in a scene in which he calls his fiancée to break off the engagement, without preparing his explanation.
And David Mason is perfect as Sidney, the hard-drinking author who cluelessly brags about his ability to spot witches and warlocks — to a group of witches and warlocks.
The cast seems larger than it is, as if everyone’s on the way to a party or just returning from one. And a pair of offstage characters — Shep’s fiancée, Merle, and Madame de Passe, a rival witch — are vividly drawn.
“Bell, Book and Candle” isn’t a profound work, but the endearing characters, sharp writing and sensitive acting make for an excellent night at the theater.
The Star Bar Players may be the Rodney Dangerfield of local theater companies, one flop away from extinction, but for the past several seasons their best productions have equalled those at Theatreworks and the Fine Arts Center.
I was hungry, so I stayed up 'till 1am to eat some Cheerios. I then got so tired, I went to bed and actually fell asleep! It has been hard, lately. Pregnancy can do that. I went to bed after having the cereal, which contained milk, of course. This was a bad idea! I woke up at 4:30 and my throat and sinuses hurt, now. It's because of the milk. So I cleaned my sinuses with my neddy pot and rinsed my mouth and gargled with listerine. My ears are all plugged up and my sinuses are killing me! It's mostly the space between my sinuses and my throat. I also showered right before bed, and with all my tons of hair, it is still wet. I feel like I've made myself sick. Now, I can't get back to sleep and I am miserable! This sucks! My husband and son are sleeping well, which is great. At least I'm not keeping them up.
The Star Bar Players made money this weekend. That is GREAT news!!!
My husband is the treasurer, and the books are in the BLACK, now. It's cool to be on top of things. This show should be really good for us!
Well, we have had our first two performances.
I think they went pretty well, even with no stage help other than me. I got applaus Saturday night as I was striking and setting props for act III. I guess people were pretty impressed with my being the only tech, after also handling the box office. Next weekend should be better, as I will have help. I love the show! It is a good one, and people are very receptive to it. No Wiccans have been offended by the hoakie witchery. I am glad of that. Nute the cat was in the paper! I am so proud of my girl!
I am really getting fed up! I have been feeling sick all day. At least I am just about 100% done with the show. It will go well.
I feel much better today. I think the morning sickness is tapering off. I hope so! I am almost done getting things together for the show. We open in 3 days, and I think we will kick major ass! I am not too stressed, which is good. My mother-in-law has my son this afternoon so I can finish up. Better get to it!
Morning sickness is on full force. I have some things I have to do, and I can't get them done, because I keep having to stop to puke or just lay down for a while. I hate this!
The show is almost ready! We are really kicking butt as far as the performances. The actors, including my cat, are ready to go. The first Dress Rehearsal is tomorrow night. I have a few, last minute things to do, and they will get done just fine. I am excited! Our reservation log is filling up and season ticket holders from last season are renewing their memberships. I think we will make it a great season.
Morning sickness still sucks, but I am working around it. I hope it doesn't last much longer...
I am done costuming and have some props to finish up. I am so proud of this show. I think it will go very well!
Oh my! I had an apple. It was soooooooo good! I feel a little better. Followed the apple with some vegetarian chicken-noodle soup. I don't know why they call it, "chiken noodle" if it's vegetarian, but it was tasty! It was a brand called, "Fantastic", and it was! I am going to go hem the last dress, now. I feel good about being "almost done". My mother-in-law came and got my son and took him to her place. It gives me time to work and rest. She is so cool! I am sooooooo lucky to have her!!!
AHHHHHHH!!! I hemmed two dresses today, and need to do a lot more.
I still have morning sickness, and can't keep food down. It is really sucking! I am tired, too.
I did, however, get some sleep last night. We put the humidifier on and it helped alot. I hope I get over this soon!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I've stopped puking! That's always a good thing. My son is taking a lot of my energy, but he gives me his in exchange. He is so good at taking care of me...and he doesn't even know it. I love being a mom. I have some major sewing to do, tonight. I hope it goes smoothly and quickly. I am hungry and tired. Hope the hubby gets home soon. He is bringing home sandwiches for dinner. I love him! He even went in to work late so I could try to rest. What a great man!!!
It's sooooooooo bad today! I can't get any rest and I have tons to do. Totally stressed!!!!!
We open in 10 days!!!! Where did the time go? I can't believe it! The set build starts tomorrow, though. That will help alot. I have some hemming of costumes to do and I have to fit a tux to one of the guys. I am getting so tired! Pregnancy makes my "job" alot harder to do... But, I still love it.
Fitting went well. The stuff I got for the guys is gonna work great. My cat, Nute, who is in the play as the lead witch's farmiliar, is doing a great job! I am so proud of her.
Being pregnant and staying at rehearsals late is taking it's toll. I will have to leave early tomorrow night. They'll just have to work without Nute for act 2. I still need to work on my son's Halloween costume. I will make it when everything for the show is done. He is going to be a dinosaur, and I am going to be a cave woman! It'll be cute. Gotta get some sleep! I'm such a wus these days!
What a day! I have sent all hte PSA's for the upcoming play and wrote and sent letters to the season ticket holders for renewal. I am doing all this and it is not my job! I am not the publicity person! She is totally dropping the ball. She is supposed to do the web-site; my husband is doing that. She is supposed to send the publicity, ans I am doing that. What good is she? We will have to talk about it at the next board meeting. I think we should axe her. (not litterally...)
It is snowing! It has been snowing since last night and will probably stop tonight. There is a bunny hanging out in my back yard, eating grass and the veggies we threw out to him. He is so cute! I just love living where wild animals can visit me.
Rehearsal tonight. Nute (the cat) is doing well in her part and I am very proud of her.
Today was a work day for me. I costumed two of the characters for our current production. I make all the clothes for the women in the shows, but I don't like making suits for men when I can buy one at Goodwill for less $ than the fabric would cost. The show will be great! My husband is updating the theatre group's website and making it much more functional. Yippie for his talent!
Had dinner over at my mom-in-laws. What a great meal and a good time. It is nice when you love your in-laws! Had bok-choi for the first time. It was YUMMIE! Moonmystic (my sweet sister) introduced me to this site. I am thinking I will be here alot! Morning sickness is getting to be a nuisance! I am soooooooooo tired of puking! My oldest cat was sick, but doing much better now. She is 13 1/2 and I was so worried I'd lose her. She is the first living thing I was ever responsible for, and I owe her a long, good life. Looking forward to seeing DOOM and SAW 2. I LOVE horror!
