Missing the Train...103:31 May 24 2011

Late night trains with one or two dozing passengers and a conductor merely along for the ride bare no witness to the deeds I perform with split second timing and the deadly precision of a fine Swiss timepiece. Traveling along within the darkened tunnels like my furry little friends, I listen carefully to the vibrations of the tracks. I smell the warm dusty breeze and catch a faint crispness tinged with modern sterility. My favorite, has descended the escalator alone to catch the last train of the evening back home from the lofty heights of the business district restaurants and chic night clubs. Tipsy she was and fuming with a smoldering temper that drowned out the lingering cigarettes and blue-cheese-stuffed-olive three martini supper she nursed all evening. This one was mad at the world for being stood up, mad at the bartender for being gay, and mad at herself for blowing her cab fare. As her balance and vision ebbed, I watched the ever present lofty video cameras return to their first point axis to make my move. A second of hesitation, then the lightening-fast game of Mother May I? timed perfectly with the on-coming train taking her so quickly that the shear force of my embrace ruptured her throat. Only enough time for a quick sip before I would be seen as a dark smudge to surveillance.
Not the best way to dine. More of a game really. Hardly fulfilling. Fast food rarely is.
The Station03:23 May 17 2011

Wafting through the unusual haunt at an hour reserved for night watchmen, cockroaches and the occasional tardy janitor, came this lost one... wearing red (a complete coincidence although the color does entice to a certain point) and hurriedly along she trotted right through a restricted area and into the main waiting lobby of the huge station with its crushed leather divans and vast dark wood decor. My eyes flickered in the yellowed light at the unexpected movement across the polished marble floors and witnessed the clickity-click of her Jimmy Choo's. What a treat this panic-stricken creature was to my bewildered mind. She came out of nowhere clutching her tiny handbag running for god-knows-what train or taxi she imagined was at the other end of the cavernous portal. Those trains and handsome cabs were long since gone and all the exits were heavily locked... No doors, no stairwells, no escalators would further her blind attempt at freedom.
I watched from above as this poor young thing dashed from one entrance to the next and as her breathy sobs increased in pitch and strength, I realized I could end her panic once and for all and as I dropped down to floor level, she actually screamed out loud "Thank God!" when she saw me unwind my body and raise my head.
How noble of her to say Grace before dinner.
The Boardwalk03:37 May 10 2011

I learned quickly that she came there to meet a complete stranger. I think she thought that stranger was me. It was a completely accidental meeting on my part. I wasn't even hungry that night. She smelled of Chanel number 5...powerful and spoiled to my senses with a history that took me back to a time of french cigarettes and strong espresso. Her eyes were a dark amber; almost caramel luminous cups of gold and brown light. Her nose, a manufactured Hollywood status trimmed of Jewish royalty. Her teeth, capped in flawless porcelain perfection. I kissed her hand when she sat down at my table actually catching me adrift in my thoughts, which I seem to be, more and more as the years go by. I played along with her assumption and not wanting to spoil the serendipity of this chance meeting, I invited her to sit and enjoy a beverage.
Her nervousness echoed through her entire ribcage and she did everything in her power to breath in a controlled rhythm. She sipped a fine Cabernet that I chose for her and after our waiter left the bottle, an outpouring of her history and her deepest desires flowed like the wine itself into me...filling my ears and heart with all her dreams and soulful wishes for love and more carnal desires. She made me smile and occasionally laugh as we walked along the foggy boardwalk....the humidity of the ocean air mixing with the suddenly dropping night. She said she was happy we had finally met and she had enjoyed all my emails. And she said that my photo did not do justice to me at all. And then she said that I did not look like my name would be Brad. That I didn't look like a Brad.
And I told her, it was not.
