I took a break last night and went and saw Rogue One. I was very impressed. I liked episode 7 (The Force Awakens), but I also felt it was just a remake/rehash of episode 4. Rogue One is totally original and stands on its own.
I was 5 years old when my parents took me to see A New Hope in 1977. I was 8 years old when I first saw The Empire Strikes Back. Darth Vader was an incredible villain. Dark, evil, powerful. Rogue One takes him a step further.
If I had seen Rogue One at a younger age (5-8), I don't know what I would have thought. Vader is scarier than in any of the previous movies. It may have given me nightmares. He only has 6 minutes of total screen time, but those 6 minutes...
And that is my one real complaint about Rogue One. They had the opportunity to include the greatest movie villain of all time in a big and grand way... And they didn't. He should have had at least as much screen time as he did in Empire. Tarkin had more screen time than Vader.
Vader aside, it's a great movie and I'm looking forward to more similar movies from Disney. They need to recoup that 4 billion they paid to George Lucas. I think we're to expect about 1 movie a year. Episode 8 is due out the end of next year, followed by a Han Solo origin story the year after that.
