I saw an article where it was saying that many Mom's (single or divorced) who were alone were having a hard time making ends meet and especially if they had young children still in diapers. They mentioned two federally funded programs that don't pay for disposable diapers and then in the next breath the comments went on how they were lazy and just wanted not to work and all the hype. Welfare is a state mandated program and it is not the same in each state, and the federal programs are managed by the states, so how long you can be on it and what the qualifications are to get it is different in each state. With that said, the article was talking about a working Mom who was going crazy trying to have enough money to buy disposable diapers. Now turning 18 in the sixties I knew right away how to solve that problem. She needed to buy cloth diapers. Yes they still make them. You just have to look on the net to get them because most stores don't carry then anymore because people have stopped buying them for years now but they do still exist. There are babies that for whatever reasons cannot wear disposables of any kind.

When I had my first child, disposables didn't exist. when she was about a month old Scott paper company came out with the first one. It was a pair of rubber snap pants where you slid in a pad. No, Huggies came later and Luvs. I liked Luvs. It was easy and you could toss them so people got away from the cloth even though you could get a diaper service. Back then there were no pull ups but you could buy after a time another slide in liner to put on the other one for over night. I don't think they make them anymore. They were called diaper doublers. If you want to save money buy cloth and use the others for going out with your child or leaving them with grandma and things like that. I realize it is more hands on but in the long run the savings will be a lot. I got tendonitis in my wrist because of pushing diaper pins through cloth but even in the 70s everyone was doing it and disposables went into the diaper bag for outings. Some need to go back to the basics if they cannot afford the disposables.
