Movies, movies, movies

I get very little time on the net because my grandsons play games on my computer almost everyday.

In the meantime I watch movies since I can't write, come here or do anything on my computer when they are doing that.

I watched a movie based on an Oscar Wilde play and I thought I would double over I thought it was so funny. I have always liked Rupert Everette and with Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth and Judi Dench the movie was priceless. It was called The Importance of Being Earnest. I have to watch it again because I thought it was so funny.

Even though I know the name well of Oscar Wilde, I don't know much about the things he has written and have never looked up his bio. I started to and saw for some reason that he was thought or his works somewhat unsavory. I will look into the details later.

This movie did passably well and got 4 out of 5 stars from that Ebert fellow. My Mom always said I had an English sense of humor whatever that is. I don't laugh at American humor as easily and laugh at English things Americans don't or think is barely humorous. I don't know what people thought of this movie because it is almost silly humor but still I loved it and that surprised me.

Maybe it was being around my maternal grandmother. Her family came to the US in the late 1800s just after the Civil War from England. Half of the kids were born in England and the others born here after they had settled in KS. Even though she was one born here, she was raised by English parents. Therefore she didn't have an accent but she had the Victorian sensibilities because she was born in the late Victorian era and lived until around 1961. She was a big influence in my early life.

Here is a clip from the movie. Now remember this was originally written in something like 1894. Now you don't see the scenes just prior but the reason there are no sandwiches is because Algy ate them all before she got there. There are some ads, just click them off.

Premier

I have a friend who makes costumes in movies. I mention her on my other profile. Anyway she worked on Django and there is a blurb about Kerry Washington and what she wore in Rome. I guess it was the premier there.

She wore this gawd awful dress and I guess the mixing of prints is in right now.

So on the first article I looked at, it didn't tell who the designer was but I thought for sure it must be a "he" and he needed another profession (sorry just my opinion). I have been sewing all my life but never wanted to really be a fashion designer but I could put together monstrosities like he created if I chose to but the trouble is, I wouldn't wear any of them. Many of them have a retro look and style but it is the materials chosen that stink for the most part but not totally.

If you are curious look up Peter Pilotto. Her dress was from his 2013 Spring collection. It costs 2,000 something dollars so the prices were not that outrageous for designer clothes but they were all ugly. I of course cannot afford clothes of that price but I could make a similar copy if my machines weren't in storage.

If you want to see them you can go to www.peterpilotto.com

If your comuter can support it you can watch the collection in a runway showing. He makes ugly shoes too, lol.

If you like washboard models and ones that look bowlegged you got them there with their hair all alike messily pulled back. I'm too old I guess because I simply don't get it. I don't want to get it actually. I don't know why people cannot recognize ugly designs. There were a couple I thought weren't so bad but honestly this fad needs to wind down fast in my opinion.

Good or not good...hmmm

For some reason, there is a lot of controversy over the movie version of Les Miserables. I haven't gone to see it but have watched a lot of clips and interviews. I know Hugh Jackman sings and is an attractive man but I don't particularly like his singing voice but it is minor. His voice is a little too high pitched and slightly nasal for me, but then my major was music in college (vocal). But what I have seen seems that he does a pretty good job. Many don't know that Anne Hathaway is a classically trained soprano mostly because what many have heard her sing in the past is very fluffy music.

Seems the main bone of contention is Russell Crowe which doesn't surprise me one bit. He is a good actor and he does have a musical background but for this type of singing...heh...as many have stated he is bad. He sings through his nose for one. Since it is in movie form it is not the same as doing it on stage. The dynamic of the musical is larger. Even though it is all singing, to put it on film you can't have people walking up to microphones. They will actually show a story and so the music has to have more depth as in the way Anne Hathaway chose to do I Dreamed a Dream. I have only heard a few dislike it. Most are raving over it and saying she deserves an Oscar.

One of the singers, Samantha Barks is reprising her role from the 25th Anniversary performance. She is a very talented singer. I guess she did very well transitioning that to a film version. The thing is they don't have to be the greatest singers to do the story justice. To bring it off they have to add a lot more to it by being good actors as well so it is a toss up if the singing isn't on a par with those on stage. This is why when they do the musicals in movie form nowadays they opt for grittier singers for the males or some of them to add the drama to it all that you don't see on stage really. Even if Russell Crowe has sang in other ways before this his singing is atrocious. This got Adam Lambert in trouble because he made a comment about it in Twitter I guess but not as bad as mine.

People seem to think he had no life before Idol but he has been in many musicals on stage. People are critical of him because of how he dresses and because he doesn't hide the fact he is gay. There is no correlation between his ability to sing well and all the other stuff. He can sing the full range of a guitar and people comment on him singing with Queen, like it is a competition with Freddy Mercury but it should be taken as a tribute. Few could sing with that band and do the music justice. You have to be able to sing at the minimum over four octaves. Lambert has an amazing range. I didn't even know how well he could sing until I watched some videos with him doing a variety of styles of music outside of AI before he started to make his albums. I was shocked at how good his voice was and I did a little research on him. But it boiled down to people criticizing him because he tweeted that he didn't care for certain things and why. It wasn't real snarky or anything. It's getting some good reviews but it is creating a wide range of feelings about it from GREAT to AWFUL...it's really weird.
