On October 3, 2002, Dracula: A Chamber Musical opened for its American Premiere; a three week run at the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Massachusetts.
The piece, which is based on the novel by Bram Stoker, literally started as a dream back in 1994. Richard Ouzounian, who wrote the book and lyrics, dreamt a scene from a show about Dracula. The next day he presented the idea to one of Canada's major producers, who was looking for new musicals. After four years of development, Dracula had its world premiere in Halifax, Nova Scotia in October of 1998. In June of 1999, it was presented at the Stratford Festival of Canada. It became the best-selling show in the Festival's history and was later recorded for television by TVOntario. A book of the complete script and lyrics, as well as music from six songs, was published just before the American Premiere and the American cast list was included along with the other two.
